Yeah both heads to me looked neat identical. I denied both and really couldn’t tell the difference in the heads (looks wise). The 0811x is definitely the lower spinning of the 2 and what worked best for me and my swing.

And to follow up with launch characteristics, the 9’ head launches a lot like the Gen2 10.5 head.

G2 XF vs G400 MAX:

Hit my Proto today on my Skytrak. Currently playing gen 2 XF w/ AD VR. Proto has HZRDUS yellow smoke. Getting about 250 less spin and about 7 yards longer. Feel and sound similar to gen 2, head slightly smaller looking to my eyes and has a great shape. I’m going to do some testing with same shaft in each head over the next week.

They are more than just black when saying they are like a Ping driver, but whatever. Not dissing the driver at all, I really like. Just my opinion. Will end it their. I do have a set of Gen 3 irons on order, but will be waiting for the Gen 3 driver.

Thanks for posting this pics. These look deeper faced than the Gen2 0811x I am using now.

Form the reviews it sounds like a serious upgrade over the Gen2. How much lower spinning or forgiving is the Proto vs Proto+?

It is a bit difficult to gauge forgiveness and spin because of the loft differences and using the adapter change does not give you direct 1:1 loft change. I have a 10* X + and I put the weight forward and have the adapter at 1.5 degree lower, this gives me a similar flight to the 0811X 9* at standard with the weight back. It still seems like the 9* is slightly less spin and lower launching even with the X+ maxed out for low launch and low spin.

Actually both are good but I had to choose one, alternating back and forth was screwing up my game, went with more control and less distance. Every time the X misses a fairway, I would say the X+ would not have missed. Every time I pure the X+, I say to myself, the X would have went much longer. Really cant go wrong with either, but need to choose and stick with it......hahaha my next dilemma is choosing Ventus Blue 6X or Diamana ZF 60TX or AD XC 6X

You have some serious shaft choices. You consider those all similar profiles? All softer in the handle right? That’s the profile that works for me.

FWIT, I received the X+ this week. Going from a 9* Epic Flash Sub Zero, I was more comfortable going to small minus (9.5*). Had to learn a swing feel change but once I did, wow. This thing finds fairways like the EPSZ never did, and I bomb it. Only twice in my first round with it did I really hit that sweet spot that feels like it just trampolines off into the distance, but even so on other drives it was very long. I have the weight back, so will look forward to graduating to the weight forward. Epic Flash shaft was HZRDUS stiff, and the X+ is the Smoke version, so that feels better also...

That was kind of my experience as well. I had the EF SZ in a 10.5º but went to small minus in the 0811 X+. I had a bunch of shafts in the SZ, last one was the regular Riptide and moved to the Riptide CB

The bit I have as well is that the center of the face is a very cool spot, but catching that spot is not all the time, and the other parts of the face still fly pretty well - so much so that I bitch about a mis-hit and others are like "What's wrong with that?" Then I am left explaining that it was a bad strike but a decent end result :) I have not messed with the weight though. The 15g is in the back to stay for now.

So, is the consensus so far that these are forgiving drives like the Ping line of drivers? Is the Plus more forgiving?

I foolishly bought the + sight unseen and struggled with it, the 0811xf was consistently longer and straighter. This past weekend the PXG rep was at our club and I had the chance to work on trackman with this club and he got me dialed in and it now exceeds the performance of the Gen2. With the weighting system in this club a fitting is key, trial and error didn’t work for me.

So what did he do to dial you in? For me the weight is so huge (15g) compared to the other ones (? forgot what they are but 0.5g) that it really moves the shot shape, and changes the feel big time. Then the hosel adjustments are pretty straightforward with lofts, and the flat lie side of the adapter. I am curious as to where you went from standard that took it from disappointing to really good.

For me this driver is better than anything I have had previously:

TaylorMade - 2016 M2, 2017 M1, M3 / PING - G30 / Titleist TS3, TS2 / Callaway Epic Flash SZ

It is long and produces little spin compared to the others. It CAN produce a bad shot, but I have to zone out and put a really bad swing on it.

Have people been changing the setup a lot off of stock? Big weight back and loft close to standard? I am at small minus and big weight back.

Are the light weights only .5 grams? I ordered a 5 gram to put in front to add some swingweight and it feels noticeably heavier.

Right! There is something about those sweet spot hits with this thing that I’ve never felt before and still thinking about. And distance / forgiveness with misses. EFSZ used to punish me ?

So from your experience, what happens with the weight forward - with respect to ball flight and sweet spot? I did not even bother moving it.

I have a lot of experience with the +. For me when I place the weight in the front I lower the ball flight. It also changes the sound and feel. I am getting consistently excellent distance and dispersion with weight back and set at 10.5. Mine came with the PX Even Flow Blue CB but I had a Tensei Pro White which works best for me. I could not be happier with this driver.

Are the prices going back up to $695 on 08/01? We have our 5th PXG fitting day of the season at our club this week and they mentioned it may be the last time to get the special COVID pricing. I wasn't sure if that was a marketing tactic by the club, or if it really will be changing back. Our teaching pro is a staffer, and we have the local rep fitters coming as well as a master fitter.
