Unpopular opinions...

Hitting the ball far (280+) isn’t that hard if you have a bit of athleticism and aren’t a total stiff, especially with how easy it is to gain distance through equipment. Don’t bitch and call everyone here liars just because you insist on using a dented big Bertha with a senior flex in it from 20 years ago, and haven’t even attempted to stretch or exercise outside of the game.

The guy who is great off the tee but a mediocre putter will pretty much always beat the guy who is wild off the tee but a great putter and short game player.

Its really not difficult to play 18 in about 2 hours by yourself, you just insist on dropping a ball and hitting another one after every shank.

Pace of play should be enforced much more strictly on public courses, and getting stuck behind a traffic jam of groups can make the game no fun. I don’t have an issue waiting on the tee box for a few minutes, but 10 minutes between shots is just ridiculous

Side note on ultimate alcohol smuggling....

A buddy had his high school grad night at Disney World. They went down the week before and dig holes in planters and buried 3 or 4 bottles of booze. Come end of grad night, the school officials were not real happy to see them walking back to the bus in their underwear with their shorts on their heads arm in arm singing “it’s a small world.”

Is it a good thing or bad thing that my friends and I have a list of what beers each course we play carries?

To echo a couple posters already:

A great long game beats a great short game every day of the week. It just doesn't matter how well you chip and putt if you are hitting it short or OB off the tee and never hitting it close to the hole in regulation. I'd rather have a few 3 putts and struggle to get up and down for par if it meant no lost balls and lots of birdie opportunities. Put another way the worst I'd score is 75 if I had makeable birdie putts all day while the best I'd score is 75 if I was scrambling for par all day.

Professionals shouldn't have to wear pants. In fact, I think they should be allowed to wear gear similar to what you see in a tennis match. They're athletes, let's let them dress that way (and hope that Pat Perez doesn't embarrass himself with the new found freedom). On top of that I think it would help change the games image and bring more people in.

Scotty Cameron = Microsoft. He sees what other club makers are doing and then copies it (and often times doesn't make an improvement)... but dang do they look nice.

Governing bodies shouldn't roll back any equipment rules for amateurs, in fact they should allow things to roll forward. New gear creates excitement and gets people out on the course, and for most of it won't affect our score or distance - USGA has nothing to worry about for am's.

Divots (sand filled or not) should be considered GUP.

Grandstands should be treated like lateral hazards.

Hear hear. At least the one I most strongly agree with is about what pros should be able to wear. I just flat out don't buy the "respect the traditions" or "respect the game" argument. Respect for the game 100% manifests itself in how you conduct yourself on the course, and how you treat your playing partners - not by how you dress. If we were to completely get rid of the dress code, pro golfers would still be sponsored by clothing companies who want them to wear clothes that appeal to the viewing audience. They're going to look professional.

And for amateurs, getting rid of dress codes at local courses is not likely to bring in a huge flood of guys wearing Speedo swimsuits and torn, cigarette burned tank tops. Folks will still dress pretty much like they do now. Today's "traditional" standard of golf attire would simply have been disallowed in times past, so it's not really "traditional" in my book - it's just current orthodoxy. Good conduct on the course, on the other hand, is a true tradition that should be upheld.

Not sure how this is in Equipment, but not my call.

I'll say this here as I've said in other places on these forums, and each time I've been met with communication just a tick up from monkeys flinging poo.

Stop raking sand traps. Normalize a foot swipe after your bunker shot. It's a penalty area and should remain so.

There is no greater threat or annoyance to the game than slow players. (unpopular opinion to follow) There should be a training program that's mandatory before golfers can play on a course. Golfers get 4 hours (MAX) to play, then they're kicked off the course and their names entered into a global slow play register and cannot play again until they've taken another 3 day course on how to play ready golf. Three strikes and you're banned from the game. This is the golfers pandemic and it too needs to be cured. I will not accept that in order to play golf, I should have to play only 9 holes so I'm not away for an entire day.Getting fit to the extent professed regularly isn't necessary, but sure sounds good. The level of fitting warranted is commensurate with a players skill. Get the basics (flex, length, lies, and grips) correct along with appropriate club design for your skill level and that will maximize the potential of the majority of golfers.Blades will not make you swing better. You control whether you swing better or not. There is less integrity in this great game than most would care to admit. Whether adhering to rules on the course or maintaining one's handicap. We all see it regularly. On TV, St Andrews looks like a burnt out muni! (I dream about playing it though - in less than 4 hours!)

This could be the least popular opinion of all on this forum: I don't care that weekend rounds at my local course take 4-1/2 hours or so.

Inherently, I'm a fast player. 3-1/2 hr rounds in a foursome is common for me and not even a stretch if my three playing partners are efficient. Solo, I've done it in well under 2hrs, walking.

But semi-slow, weekend rounds at my local public courses really don't bother me. I sort of expect it and given there's nothing I can do to change it, I just accept it.

There, I said it.

I bet people secretly agree

But the " grow the game thing " is really annoying- I dont care if other people want to play golf any more than i want them fishing or hunting with me

Maybe it is because I am in south florida but we dont need any more drunk, radio blasting slice across 2 fairways clowns out here

Grow the game really means " sell more stuff"

To get all zen- you have to let the game find you

Golf on TV without the spectators is far more watchable.

Waffle Crisp is GOAT. Very hard to find though. 3 year+ product cycles were better. Nike should leave all together. You should never have to go back and re hit, ever. 95% of golf fitters and golf instructors should find a new job.The game does not need to grow. Companies need to scale back down to pre-tiger. He spiked the market in a way that will never happen again. People came, they left. Adjust accordingly. Roll the ball back for the pros. I want them to hit it the same distance as me. While your at it, raise the rim height in the NBA to 13’. And NFL quarterbacks should throw opposite handed. Everyone should suck as much as me!
