Titleist EXP- 01

Found one the other day and played it for a few holes. I understand it was a test ball. Any insights?

I got a sleeve of them to try from our pro-shop guy who knows I'm always curious about balls. Very disappointing and I couldn't really put it in great detail but it seemed a little low flight and low spin I guess. I did not realize it until I'd already told him I hated it but apparently (I may be wrong) it has a TPU cover instead of cast urethane. If that's true, it probably explains my dislike. For whatever reason, all the TPU balls I've tried in recent years just don't seem right to me. Don't know if it's a feel/sound thing or what.

Chrome Soft is TPU, I think. And when Snell first came out with the "Red" it was TPU but he almost immediately replaced it with a cast urethane model. I had tired it (again, not realizing it was TPU) and it was one of the most disappointing balls I'd tried in many years. Just dead feeling and lacking carry distance for me with all clubs.

So anyway, cover material or whatever, no a fan of EXP-01 based playing it for one round and nine holes of another.

You are correct. This ball was produced in ball plant 2 which is all injection molded covers which would be TPU. This was definitely new for Acushnet given that every prior urethane offering had been thermoset cast urethane.

I also agree on your preference for thermoset urethane vs TPU. The exception being Srixon’s last couple of generations of the ZStar which is fantastic and feels very different from other TPU covers.

Lastly, the Snell MTB Red was horrible, granted it was produced in a different factory and given Dean’s history with thermoset cast urethane was a bit of an oddball.

Like a lot of you, I'm always interested in learning about new innovations in the golf ball industry. However, I wonder if OEMs are going overboard. I'm sure some of what Titleist is doing is because these small ball makers (Snell, Vice, etc.) are cutting into their market share. I have spent the last few years trying a plethora of different balls. My take is the Pro-V-1 is still the best available. Granted it's the most expensive, but I think it's worth it. Having said all that I will probably give this new ball a try just to make sure I'm not missing something.

At $40 a box, I am surprised. I thought the experimental ball was going to be ProV1 competitive, but that isn't the case. Who's it designed for?

Appears to be aimed at someone who want a lower-flying ball that's a lot like a Chrome Soft, with a Titleist logo, priced a little cheaper than Chrome Soft or Pro V1.

During my very brief tryout of the EXP-01 I found the performance slightly disappointing in exactly the same ways I was disappointed with Chrome Soft several years ago. I think it is Titleist's Chrome Soft clone, TPU cover 'n all.

I got a sleeve, its not worth it. Cheaper balls are way more durable and TP5/x and ProV1/x and AVX perform exponentially better
