Fitting question

Quick question that I’m sure has been covered, forgive me for being repetitive. I’m 5’6 with a wrist to floor of 31.5. So technically I should be playing a 1/2 inch short irons at 1 degree flat. This based on Ping chart. So my question is, do I follow this and cut my irons 1/2 of standard and throw some tape on the heads to get my 3 sw puts back OR do I just flatten them more?

Personal preference on length. I would first try choking up the 1/2 or even more to see if it works before cutting them. Do the same thing for lie angle before you cut as changing the lie angle with change the length slightly. The good news is you can do it with just a few irons to test it (9/7/5 or even just 8/4). Don't assume you need to add the lead tape or even hit a specific swing weight. Best thing to do is bring lead tape with you to the range and add tiny amounts until you are able to hit the sweet spot consistently. It could be you don't need to add any lead tape or you need more than 3g.

The Ping chart uses static measurements. You should be doing dynamic measurements. In other words, what is the club doing while you’re swinging it. What kind of strike pattern do you currently have with your irons?

Good advice, i just like to add that for lie angles, we can use the same ball marker test even on tests where we lower our hands, just set a mark on the grip so you test the exact same play length you want to try out. This way we can dial in "everything" before we order a new set.

FYI - 31.5" WTF typically means a 37" 5i playing length by most fitters charts. That's more like -1" (depending on the stock playing length - which can be different for different iron sets). So don't feel like you have to stick to the 1/2", go a bit more and see how it feels - especially for the long irons. That's where you'll potentially see a bigger difference.

In addition to the good advice you've already gotten, Lie angle should always be fit dynamically. You can't tell what you'll need just from the WTF or any static fitting chart. Fortunately it's real easy for you to do on your own. So in addition to bringing the lead tape, also bring a dry erase marker. This thread explains the way to test lie angle (face labels it talks about are nice but not required).

Id play them standard and flatten them a little more. Although you could probably get away with 1 degree flat or maybe try 2 if the toe seems way off the ground. I generally believe that most people fit into 1 degree increments on lie angle. I don’t believe in dynamic fitting.
