Keeping white hats white

Recommended Posts

gone through 2 white nike classic 99 hats this summer. It gets upwards of 90 at 8am here in the Southwest ... tried some oxyclean product and it made the hat spot like reddish brown.

anybody have ways to clean sweat soaked Nike hats and keeping them white??? My black and dark blue aren’t an issue it’s just the white.

Following.

I've always hand washed with regular laundry detergent. It works okay but maybe something else is out there.

Wife puts my hats in hat frames then in the washer with other items. Not sure of the soap but it's normal washer soap. Each hat come out smelling nice and pretty white or what ever the color is. Reason many of my hats are 4-5 years old.

Amazon.com: BallcapBuddy Cap Washer Hat Washer for Baseball Caps - The Original Patented Baseball Cap Cleaner Rack for Dishwasher or Washing Machine Frame for Youth and Adult Sized Caps - Made in USA- Black: Home & KitchenI've used this for years and it's awesome. Throw the hat in the frame then in the dishwasher, it always comes out clean. Leave the hat in the frame and put it outside for an hour or so (in AZ at least) and you're good.

Ill sometimes even soak a hat on the course with the course drinking water or ice bucket, if you do this before you end your round a lot of times it will be almost dry in AZ with in a few min. You wet it before the sweat dries, it seems to dry just fine. Havent had an issue. Otherwise I get home and clean with with regular liquid dish soap, a blue sponge with the pad on one side. Stuff some paper towels inside them to hold the shape and put outside usually dry with in an hour or 2.

I have 4 of those frames only white. They work great. Difference is wife puts them in the washer then hangs them on a rack in the garage to dry. Not sure it ever crossed her mind to use the dishwasher.

@monkeyboy - for those of us in good physical/cardio condition, excessive sweating isn't normally tied to playing golf, and I play in CA heat. If I am cranking 25-30mph on my bike, yes or a hard 2hr gym/cardio workout, yes.
But typically, its more a sign of overly sensitive nervous system. From Harvard, "Sweating is under the control of the sympathetic nervous system, which orchestrates the body's reaction to stressful situations and emergencies—sometimes called the "fight or flight" response. To put the organs of the body on alert, the sympathetic nervous system uses chemical messengers."
Just saying.

I sprayed mine with Spray and Wash the other day, then scrubbed lightly with a scrub brush. Rinsed it off, let it air dry and it looked good.

I love the Nike hats precisely because they are made with such a light breathable stretchy fabric, that is easy to wash. I wear a Classic 99 for golf and a Legacy 91 for running, both get super sweaty in the NYC summers.

I just throw them in the bathtub. When I shower, I lather them up (the back mesh part, and the sweat band) with my bar of soap, then hand rinse out the soap under the faucet. Just gotta be careful not to be hard on the structured crown part so it doesn't wrinkle. Takes me a less than a minute.

It's good to make it a habit of it before the sweat stains set in.

I use a product called "Molecule Sports"

They make a few different things for taking care of technical fabrics. One of my other hobbies requires me to get into a nomex racing suit. I've used Tide/etc on the suit and it didnt do squat. Molecule makes them look brand new.

Now, what I do with my white hats is they have a product called "protect". I spray it on before and toss it in the dryer to cure it. I've played about 5 rounds and 10 range sessions in a white hat and in 110* Az weather this month and it still looks brand new. Definitely worth the couple bucks.

Guess you haven't read my posts. I grew up in heavy humidity mid-west on a farm, live and play golf in SoCA, SoTX (have a house there) No & So AZ (family) and Maui for the last 25yrs or so, in temps as much as 115* too, 120* in the desert a few years back when I needed my golf fix. I won't go into deserts in other countries. Have a good weekend and try not to sweat too much.

I avoid white hats but have a couple of them and find that if you can wet them or hand wash them before they dry they do much better. I started hand washing everything this summer as soon as I get home just to stave off the stains but I have also used the dishwasher too.

As far as sweating I did really good hiking with almost no sweat in Utah earlier this month when it was 93 degrees out and super low humidity. Back to South Florida and today's humidity was horrid. We started at 81 degrees feeling like 90 and finished at 93 feeling like 104. I was a sweaty mess and I am in decent shape. The humidity is the difference.

Toothbrush with a little mix of detergent and water. Sweat stains come right out. A little annoying but they stay nice and clean.

Judgmental... odd word. Can I ask how old you are? I just reread my post and there was nothing judgmental about it; it's below. "for those of us in good physical/cardio condition, excessive sweating isn't normally tied to playing golf, and I play in CA heat. If I am cranking 25-30mph on my bike, yes or a hard 2hr gym/cardio workout, yes. But typically, its more a sign of overly sensitive nervous system. To put the organs of the body on alert, the sympathetic nervous system uses chemical messengers."

Statements supported by fact. What I learned from being around athletes including marathoners, one ultra-marathoner that's a doctor and a number of cyclists is excessive sweating during certain highly strenuous activities is fine, but it's not always a good sign during moderate activities. Golf to me walking 18 is moderate at best even in 105-110* heat. Have a good weekend.

As a former telephone lineman in Miami and someone who walks and carries a bag I am pretty familiar with the heat

Try a dri fit cloth under the hat soaked in cool water and dont wear white

Pearl gray , light blue or od green dont show stains very easily

a moist bandana around the neck and tucked in the collar works wonders on a hot day
