Kirkland (Costco) Wedges!?

Why? 90% of the players on the planet do perfectly fine with a general purpose wedge using a medium width sole and medium amount of bounce. It's mostly the GWRX type guys that have to have some special grind on their clubs for reasons that are often in the players head more than a necessity for their game.

So the 52/56/60 seems odd in the sense that most newer sets would have a PW of about 44-45 degree and a GW around 48-50.

If this is to fit a set with a GW of 48 , that would be a set with 5 wedges (PW-LW) with the target customer being someone who would never need that many (Is Phil shopping Costco?)

I would thing offering two options in either 56/60 or 54/58 would basically fit all golfers, and may even spike the interest of more high end golfers. Maybe whoever they contracted with and the price they negotiated dictated the 3 pc set but also think that may deflect some buyers.

All that said.... Costco is rarely wrong in their business decisions.

Good write up on all things K-Sig golf by WRX. Details on wedges, more putters and new balls. I would say this coming year is going to be expensive, but it is Costco we're talking about.

I would venture to guess that 90% of casual golfers have no idea what the actual lofts of their irons are or have any concept of proper yardage gaps.

I actually go 50 (set wedge), 52, 56 myself.  I prefer to hit full shots with my 50 set wedge and use the 52 for those 40 - 60 yard pitch shots, as well as around the green.  I rarely hit full shots with wedges past the 50, so I'm not especially concerned with yardage gaps.

Yeah hopefully know rough idea when these wedges will be released to try them out

October.

$159 for a set of three...

Insane... I'm particular about bounce and sole width, but might pick up a set just to have a set of wedges kicking around...

On the chicken front, I spent a few weeks working the rotisserie. No horror stories (Costco has a book, follows the book, and updates the book) but the downside of that is the chicken is often overcooked... Just the nature of the beast... it's quality meat and everything is kept very clean... after cooking 2 tons of birds, I have no interest in eating it again.

I would venture a guess that Costco has no idea what they are doing with regards to golf hence the ball was a disaster, putter is hideous, and the wedges will leave most of their target market with a 6 - 11* loft gap between PW and gap wedge.  I'll define target market as a Callaway Mavrik Iron player (mid to high hcp) which has a 41* PW.  Or if you want to use TM 790 there is still a 7* gap.  Also keep in mind this part of the market fairs much better with full shots vs a 3/4 or 1/2 shot.

If someone plays 4-5 times a year then have at it they don't care about golf anyway.  If you actually keep a hcp you shouldn't be wasting time with these.

Wedges will be a hit seller too.  Looks like Costco is ramping up production to ensure these will be readily available at launch.  They have learned from the putter release, smart move.

These are going to sell like hotcakes. Costco makes great golf products at a great price for consumers. Love what they are doing.

One golf ball was a "disaster" and Costco did right by their customers by pulling them from the shelves and offering a refund to anyone who bought them.  One golf ball was the talk of the golf world, their three-piece ball is a good value, and their gloves are a terrific value.

Was the four-piece ball (not the original) any worse than the disaster that was the poorly constructed Chrome Soft that MGS uncovered?  Did Callaway refund people's money?  Is the putter any more hideous than the Taylormade Truss or any number of other putters out there?

You really haven't done a good job of explaining what the problem is with these wedges, so I'll just chalk up your comments as those of an elitist doing no more than turning his nose up at the Kirkland branding.

So you consider "great" golf products to be when a company chooses blanks from a Chinese manufacturer and stamps their label on them?  Kind of an insult to a company like Taylormade who actually does R&D.

Good for Taylormade...and I'll continue to buy their products that demonstrably outperform the competition.  I'm a consumer, not a brand loyalist; I'll continue to patronize companies that give me a solid product at a good value.

Until you can show me that a $160 wedge offers proportionate performance improvements over a $60 wedge...

I use Kirkland brand stuff so you are incorrect.   With regards to Callaway, do you know of anyone who found their balls to be defective and asked for a refund?  So your point there is thrown out.  Truss is hideous but they also made the Spider which wins on tour every week so again your point is invalid.

I like Costco I just find it baffling that anyone on this board who knows better actually buys this stuff.  They aren't designing it, it's generic junk that I would expect ignorant golf consumers to buy that play 3 times a year.

Then I suggest you get fitted for a SIM driver and 3w.  They have outperformed every other driver and fairway wood I have hit.

Not sure I'd agree with them having no idea about golf. Their first venture with the original KSig was a bit of a flyer as they do with a lot of new products, but from having talked with a couple of marketing people at Costco, that frenzy and after market resale madness validated their members and non-members would buy Costco golf products. And please don't lose sight of the fact that for Costco, it's about membership revenue as opposed to store level revenue.

Their "miss" so far was round 2 of the 4 piece balls but they did the right thing in fully refunding everyone's purchase AND letting you keep the balls. Not sure that anyone in the golf industry has done anything like that.

I didn't buy a putter and probably won't get the wedges as there isn't a need but as the current wedges hit their lifetime value and if there is a solid positive opinion on this wedges post WRX'ers testing, I wouldn't be against taking a look.

This is for the player who just needs a set of wedges to golf. Not sure why some defending quality consistency and the sort about wedges sold at costco versus your local retailer. All Costco does is find out what people want, find a manufacturer and rebrand it with their Kirkland logo. In comparison, it is just like a physical Amazon where you can buy goods. Sometimes, they keep the name while other times, they ask to have their logo on the item. I am pretty sure the maker of the wedges will not have tour quality exactness but like others have said, unless you have your own loft and lie machine, how many of us really know what lofts our irons or wedges are specially after playing a season.

I would say they know enough about golf to sell product.  Costco is extremely smart in how they conducts business and I shop there weekly.  And agree they have the best return policy in the game but it's clear who their target is for these products and it isn't highly educated golfers.  Grinds matter on wedges, lofts matter on wedges, shafts matter in wedges.  You have none of those options so why bother?  If it's price then i understand that but it really doesn't make sense when people refer to costco as making "great" golf products.  I know what it takes for companies to do that and it isn't just calling up a supplier at a manufacturing house to send some samples and you choose from 20 of them.

Again i'm a Costco fan just not when it comes to sport where equipment matters in scoring.

Welcome to the boards. The snobbery in the entire forum is like this... Because we all love golf. Most of us are passionate about golf above and beyond your average player. That leads to strong feelings about... pretty much anything to do with golf. Just pop over to the instruction forum if you wanna see a real battle dome.

That being said, I still think these will be fine for a vast majority of golfers that play a few times a year. Yes, the gaping could be REALLY off, but at the same time, you think someone that doesnt know that should even be playing a 60* wedge?

My prediction is Costco will sell a ton of them, there will be a resale market, Costco's foray into the golf market will be vindicated once again.

I'm due for a driver fitting this year; my 2016 M1 is long in the tooth.  The SIM will definitely be in the mix.  I'll probably keep my RBZ 3w...when you find a 3w that works...

They will definitely end up in my cart whenever I find them on the shelf...

Honestly, I'm with you on balls / accessories being where the money is. I'm somewhat shocked they bother with equipment as it seems like a pretty large upfront cost for not much return... I do wonder if the eventual goal is a boxed set, as I bet the margins on those are slightly better than clubs alone.
