MP-18...any love?

I pictures of the new 921 Forged, or what seem to be the replacements for the 919 Tours, which replaced the 910T. The new 921's look like they will be awesome!!!!

Bbbbuuuuutttt...they look a lot like my MP-18 SC irons?!?! When I got the 18's, I chose them over the 919's because I like the forged feel and I wanted a little more forgiveness. I have never regretted it. I have not tried the MP-20's so I don't know if they are that much better.

Does anyone else think the new 921's are a combination of the 919's and the SC's?

Anyone else love the look and feel of their MP-18's, particularly the SC's?

I had the same thought on the JPX921 Tour. The cavity looks very similar. More similar to the SC than the 919 Tour.

I love my MP 18 SC. I got the irons right when they came out, now approaching 250 rounds with them.

I see in your sig you have T20 wedges. I just got my wedge gaps checked at a fitting (had never done) and they told me 50-54-58 is right.

I'm going to take the opportunity to dump my SM7 (nice wedges, never really WOWED me) and get T20 wedges. Do you have chrome or raw? My SM7's are raw and I'm leaning towards satin chrome in my T20's.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that with the 921's

At release I purchased MP18 MMCs due to similar forgiveness to AP2 I was used to gaming, but also tried the MP18 SC. Softest Forged CB I've ever felt. So smooth.

Same here - especially with the turf interaction. I took a gamble with picking up a set of MP20 HMB's thinking they'd be a good fit for my game but alas they weren't. After playing Mizuno blades since the MP33's came out (wore them out - the 18's were my replacement set), I'm a blade guy. I'm now gaming a combo set of 4 & 5-iron HMB's with 6-P being my MP-18 MB's. After playing a few rounds with this combo I'm still not 100% sold on the HMB's and might swap them out.

I play the MMC's, and have been tempted to try and find a 8-pw in the mb's. But I just received a New Level 623M demo, so this could all change.

Anyone compare the mp18 sc and the mp20 mmc? Really curious how these compare from blade size to sole to feel.

See my signature, you and I basically play the same iron setup. I didn't go for the MP 20s because they didn't offer an SC in that line. They just went Blade to MMC. Their reasoning was that there wasn't a big enough difference between the SC and the Blade in terms of forgiveness and playability to warrant producing both models. Personally I think they probably just sold more MMCs and Blades and cut the SC out because it wasn't as profitable.

This leaves the SC players in a weird spot. You can get more forgiveness in the MP 20 MMC, HMB or 921 Forged or even comparable with the Tour...but all of those irons feature more offset than the SCs. I loved the SCs because they have the forgiveness of a cavity with the offset of the blade and a slightly longer blade length. Supposedly the 921 Tour and Forged will have less offset than the 919s. If that's the case they could be in the running for me. If not I'll probably try to squeeze another season out of my SC 18s and see what the MP 22 line brings to the table.

I'm hoping they bring back the SC in 22 because if you look at Taylormade they cut out the 750 in favor of the 760 for a generation and then brought back the P7MC in the next generation because they couldn't get any tour players besides Day into the 760. Hopefully the Mizuno Tour Staff has been asking for an SC in 22. Fingers crossed.

I just want a small Mizuno, 1 piece cb. Thinking hard about finding a good condition used set of 18 sc and give them a run.

If they would give us an evolution of the 64's, to the US market, that would be wonderful. I know they did the 66 in Japan only, just hard to find when they were released. Plus, you would have to buy blind.

Mizuno has done such a wonderful job listening to their followers by making the higher lofted irons not look as round and "scoopy" (not even sure if that is a word). They really evolved that part of the set in a great way. By evolving the 64 with the diamond shaped cavity and shaping the scoring clubs to be a little sharper and thinner topline, and a little pre worn leading edge now that would be a winner in my book. The 64 had such a meaty, soft feeling at impact it's hard to articulate.

I play mp 18 fli hi in my 4i

mp 18 mmc 5-7

and mp18 mb 8-pw

the newer sets are nice but don’t really get me any better numbers on the course.

I was keen to realize that the sc were not beneficial in any way.

When I saw this used set in my specs (+1/2, 2* upright) I jumped on it. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I have project x rifle 6.0 through the set so maybe that’s why I love them so much but I thank the lord daily I was able to find my combo set used @550 bucks in 2018.

I have a lot of love for the MP 18's. I just recently switched, 3 weeks ago, as my local shop had a set on markdown. 4-pw KBS tour 120's. I've had Mizuno irons in the past but was mainly a long time Ping player. My Pro at my club set me up with a set of 716 AP2's for a steal and I never got along with them, off center hits seem harsh vs forgiving even for a players club. When the MP 18 line came out I really liked the look of them, except the price. So I tried to improvise but kept them in the back of my mind. Well when I had my chance to grab some before they disappeared I did and glad because they are some of the best looking and playable sets of irons I've personally hit in some time. I've added a MP 18 Fli Hi 3 iron to complement.

As far as what I will do when they wear out, well I'll probably need a SGI iron at that time because I'll be too old to swing something like that down the road.

Hit'em straight.

Thanks

Im glad im not the only one. I’ve been a Mizuno fan since my MP-33’s back in the day. Before my 18’s, I had 64’s. 64’s were nice. The 18’s are smooth. I haven’t hit the MB blades, but I feel the SC gives a but more forgiveness. I love the HiFli and think my combo is perfect for me.

im gonna give the T20 wedges a try. Im just impressed with the SM7’s...

  • 2 months later...

Love the 18s and was surprised at how well I am playing the blades. Starting to think the warnings about blades are a bit over the top. Bad swings will get bad results no matter how much technology is in a club, but at least I'll get the feedback I need to correct the bad swing from a blade.

Love my SC set, been 2 years and still going strong! I have been tempted but these CB are the softest and truest I've ever played. Only other club that would compare might be the Miura CB, that said I always thought I was weird because I've never seen anybody with the SC in the bag aside from myself and the odd WITB on insta lol.

didn't have the MP18 SC but did have the MP18 blades.  Traded them for 919T just being bored over the winter and shouldn't have.  The shape of the MP18 was my favorite Mizuno in along time or ever.  I think the MP20 is a bit more forgiving but only a tiny bit.  I should have just kept the darn MP18 but that's just not as much fun.

For me, the MP18 MMC Fli HI was better than the MP20 HMB. Launched easier and went through the ground better. I liked the MP20 MMC better than the MP18 MMC though. The MP20 MMC have a thinner sole, thinner topline, and better feel. You give a MP20 MMC to anyone gaming a MP18 SC and I don't think they would be disappointed. That said, anyone hitting a MP18 SC well could also get along with the MB no problem. No drop off in forgiveness in my mind
