If Tiger wins the PGA and the US Open this year, does it count as a Tiger Slam?

Masters - Reigning champion.

PGA Championship - Coming up, TW could win it.

US Open - Coming up, TW could win it.

The Open Championship - Canceled this year, could be considered "vacant".

So if TW wins the PGA and the US Open, he will be holding all the titles that currently are non-vacant. Does that count as a Tiger Slam? I can see it go either way.

YES - he holds all the titles that are possible to hold.

NO - slam implies "four", and TW would hold only three. Too bad so sad about The Open being cancelled. If you go along with this reasoning, we might need a new name for the "slam" should TW achieve it. Maybe "Tiger 2020 Slam" or similar.

Discuss.

i think you've hit the sauce a bit early in the day.

a slam is defined as 4 majors ...so, no.

No, I'm not contradicting myself, please look at the schedule and read closer. The Masters will still be played this year, it's just later on the calendar. TW is the 2019 Masters champ, someone else (or possibly Tiger, if he wins it again) will be the 2020 Masters champ. There will be NO 2020 Open champ because the tourney was cancelled. Therefore the title is "vacant", UNLIKE The Masters.

The Masters will be held this calendar year but it will be the next season, just like when the next Open will be held.

There is only one major this season.

Completely false. A "Grand Slam" is winning all four majors in a calendar year. It has NOTHING to do with the "season". Ask the folks at Augusta National if they are holding the 20-21 Masters Tournament twice, or if they are holding the 2020 Masters, followed by the 2021 Masters next year. The PGA Tour can play any games they want with their schedule, but The Masters is played once per year!

IF TW wins the PGA and the US Open, he will be the CURRENT champion of The Masters, PGA, and US Open. Now "The Open Championship" is cancelled in 2020, that means the title is VACANT. So TW would hold all three titles, except the one vacant title. It may not be a Tiger Slam, but it's pretty close.

Grand Slam is a term derived from Bobby Jones’ “Impregnable Quadrilateral of Golf” as dubbed by OB Keeler(Jones’ de facto press agent)..

therefore, the term is defined with “four” tournaments in mind...

Tiger isn't prepared to play in the PGA Championship. He's just trying to catch lightning in a bottle. You don't prepare by playing 1 tournament in 6 months time. Getting ready for a Major is a process, and Tiger's the ultimate process guy. His body just won't let him do it. I don't see him being competitive with guys who've been grinding. He's probably the best ever but you can't win that way. He played a few events leading up to the Masters last year and he had his game in order. After that he hardly played and it showed when he tried to play the rest of the Majors. If he can't adequately prepare, I don't see him in the mix with guys who have. To win a Major without being able to properly prepare for it would be the greatest achievement in his golf career, but his body is obviously shot with the schedule he's trying to input.

I agree, this just ain’t the year.

TW kept it together for that year plus stretch after the fusion with sheer force of will and physical pain threshold off the charts and desire.

Still can’t believe he pulled that off.

You could literally see him change after that win. 10 years of coming up empty, injury, humiliation, you name it. All taken care of with one win. The satisfaction must have been incredible.

Now, I can’t see him pushing himself like that. Why should he risk his health. He’s the total King ? of golf with nothing to prove to anyone.

Maybe himself, of course. But, as you say, he’ll just see if he can catch lightning in a bottle. Who know? One day over the next few years he just may show up with everything clicking and pull of another one.

100% disagree. TW is not sitting around eating donuts this week, he is preparing for the championship out of sight and out of mind. This isn't some PGA Tour rookie we're talking about here, TW's nerves aren't going to kick up at the opening tee because he hasn't played a competitive round in a few weeks. TW knows his game better than anyone, he knows how to prepare better than anyone, and he coming to play next week.

TW didn't play poorly a few weeks ago, he could easily have been contending had a few more putts gone in. He WILL contend in the championship, count on it. I don't think he's the favorite, but right after Rahm and Rors, I think TW is in the next group of guys that has a legitimate chance to win it.
