Tell me about your utility iron

I’m thinking of replacing my 4 iron with a utility iron, something like a Srixon U65/85, TM GAPR, Callaway X Utility. Anyone out there have any feedback?

I use the MP 18 MMC Fli His which are the older brother of the HMBs. They worked exactly as planned. Gave me the higher ball flight I was looking for and added forgiveness. The thing to watch out for is the lofts and the hot faces. For instance my Fli-Hi 5 iron came at 25* and my regular 6 iron is 30*. The 5* gap is already big and mix it with the hot face of the hollow head in the 5 iron and I had a pretty big gap to deal with. So I bent the 5 iron weak to 26* to center it better between my 4 driving iron and 6 iron. I'm even toying with the idea of knocking my 6 iron down to 29* to tighten up the gap even more. Other than that I have no regrets. Just have to dial in your lofts to manage the gap correctly.

I have a 20 deg U45 that stays in the closet. While I like the feel and performance of the head, I've never truly gotten along with the stock Nippon shaft. I prefer my Z745 3 iron with the SF i95S. I've been meaning to change out the shaft, just haven't gotten to it. It is a little longer than my 3 iron, so I can't decide if I should match the length and swing weight of the 3 iron or something else. Hence the inaction. I would say the driving irons are good clubs if you are looking for a hybrid that is an "iron", but I believe you need to find the right shaft.

I really like my Maltby FDI heads with Nunchuk shafts, really straight and forgiving.  I have them as my 5i (24), 4i, (21.5), and 3i (19) and they mix well with my Apex G-6i.  The lofts shown are slightly bent from stock, and the numbers on the clubs don't match how I use them, but I don't care.  I have even been thinking of trying a 19 degree bent to 17 for off the tee.  Not sure if I have enough swing speed for that club, but the 19 works so well I might try it, and I have one more Nunchuk sitting around waiting for a job, so a cheap experiment.

These three clubs have given me some of the most memorable golf shots I have ever hit including my first ace.

I love my Titleist t500 3 iron, I have tried my friends Srixon a few times but I’m not as consistent as with the Titleist.

Thinking off adding the t501. 1 iron as an option from the tee

Thanks for all the replies. I could see the potential gapping problem. For example, I wonder if I would hit a 23° U65 significantly further than my Z765 4 iron which has 22°? Of course, when I played today I hit my 4 iron twice and striped it both times. Once off of a tee and another from 185 in the trees which was a punch hook.

Love my HMB 3 iron with Tensei White 100 hybrid shaft for the most part. Head feels absolutely butter when you connect. Bomber off the tee no doubt, but off the deck it's fallen right in line with where it should be based on 4 iron distance.

One caveat, it's not as consistent as I'd like from the fairway due to the extra length I had to keep on the shaft to remain at the stock swingweight. Be careful swapping shafts out (I'm on my second attempt at this build) and make sure you get the SW back into an acceptable range if you go that route.

Picked up a #3 HMB20 with the Modus 120 stiff shaft. I've always been a good long iron player off the tee, lesser competence off the turf. Compared with my MP-62 3 iron in my previous set, a major improvement in forgiveness. Also I've never been consistent with the hybrid from the tee, but ok from the turf. Put it all together, and you know why I picked my utility iron to be more iron like with a steel shaft. So far, on tighter par 4's less than 400 yards, this club does the job. Very pleased.

Have the Bridgestone hf2 4 iron to go with the tour b x cb. Not as much of a utility club, but very much used as one. Surprised at the size of the top line. Very thin for a GI club. Very hot off the face and still holds onto the forged feel.

I play the 23 degree Srixon as my 4 iron and then have the 765 5 iron (25 degrees) as my next club. Works well in terms of gapping, but the U45 does go longer than my 4 iron would. That would be due to loft, design and shaft length.

I also have the H45 in 19 degrees and I find that having both a standard hybrid and a utility iron works well because it’s gives me options. One thing I think the utility iron doesn’t do well is work out of rough and dodgy lies. It’s great from the tee and fairway though. Vs a 4 iron for me it’s a no brainer

Srixon U85 should be good - and you already use Srixon irons.

I'd just add that I recommend to use the same shaft as the rest of your irons - if Srixon don't offer it as an option, pull it out of your current 4 iron you're replacing and swap it in the utility.

I use an Epon 19deg to replace a 2/3 iron and have always used the same shaft as the rest of my irons in it. Lovely.

Currently in u500 with Tensei 100x. I love the flight and distance I gain with this.

I agree with others U85 is easy to hit if you can get past the looks. Other options I liked were the HMB and GAPR Lo were solid options as well. I would recommend getting a few to try and flip the other ones so you can try to see if graphite is better or steel is better for your game.

I just added another wedge to my bag, and switched from a UDI to a U500 3 iron. The UDI went too far. It was nearly as long as my 3 wood. I don't love the sound of the U500 (bit of a metallic "tink" to it), but I absolutely love the flight I get out of it. It's still long and incredibly easy to hit. I could have carried this with my old setup and been better off yardage gap wise than with the UDI. If you are going to get a utility club more in the middle of your set, definitely worry more about the yardage you get out of them than the number of the bottom of the club so you don't end up with a crazy gap.

I have a 718 T-MB 4 iron (24*) and a Cobra F7 4 iron (20*). I only play one at a time depending on course and the hybrid i want to carry. I got the F7 head really cheap and found out the loft was only 20* so figure i'd try as a DI before buying the T-MB. It ended up being a bomber that I use on some courses that are tight but lengthy.

I play S300 in my set but both these have Aldila NVs in them. the Cobra has a NV 105 S Hybrid shaft and the 718 has a NV MLTI 105 Iron shaft in it. Both are dead straight but give me some good distance and i feel the extra help in keeping the ball airborne, especially with a shot thats a groove thin or a little on the toe. Never got along with DIs or hollow long irons that came with a steel shaft.

For you I'd recommend the Srixon or Try a T-MB. the Callaway and Mizuno DIs are really nice as well. I feel like with the right shaft they're all going to play nicely if you can hit a DI or long iron effectively

I picked up my current irons preowned to try the x100 shafts 712mbs, in a 4-p set. The first thing I did was place the 4 iron in the closet. I shafted up a 712U 3 iron to live in the bag as the longest iron. It is my chickenstick and useful for mishitting long par 3s that would require a level of ballstriking I don't posses. I have tried a couple hybrids but never felt comfortable at address, and they have cost me more strokes than saved. Without regular play and practice, the 200 yard approach is unrealistic for me to have great expectations for, and something I saw most players chase to no avail.

If anything can go right, it might!

Not quite a utility club, but I swapped out my Wilson V6 4i for a D7 Forged 5i (same loft, but 4i length) and its a much more consistant and forgiving club (for me) than the V6 4i.

I did try a Wilson 4i Utility, but it went too far for my gapping.

I carry a Gapr Lo 2i as well, but I am considering getting a D7 become a 3i for my set (4i head, 3i length) to swap out the Gapr
