No way.

CBS had Ken Venturi as the color guy, and in his era he was the best. He could call a spade a spade. He won a major. He knew the icon Ben Hogan better than any other human being. He had played great, then had a few years of playing awful, and so he could go easy on pros who were struggling. Ken Venturi was the consummate color guy in the booth.

CBS has been struggling to find the replacement for a long time. They need someone who has played at the highest levels. They need someone who can identify with a struggling golfer who rises from hard times. They need someone who understands the golf swing on a fundamental level. And someone who is honest, and someone who can ask a waitress for a Diet Doctor Pepper, and turn around an order a Crown Royal on the rocks.

Who is that guy? Maybe no one in this generation.

I think that Tom Watson could be a great commentator, in the best tradition of Byron Nelson; but Tom probably has too much going on, and doesn't need the money. But he would call a spade a spade, and that would be welcome.

Graeme McDowell might be darn good, but he probably stands a chance to make more money playing than being a commentator. I like Graeme.

A lot of the Americans, like Davis Love, are just too bland - I'm thinking Stuart Cink, Tom Lehman, and others of their generation. Freddie Couples would be interested for one or two weeks, and then he would pull a Davis Love and drop out. Go back to sitting on the couch.

Phil Mickelson? Well, when DraftKings takes over the league, Phil knows the ins and outs of Las Vegas. Perish the thought. For those of you who welcome daily betting on golf, God love you.

in the meantime, CBS will struggle to find a player in the Byron Nelson, Ken Venturi mold. Someone who is extremely smart about golf, and someone who can relate.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse

OMG I love Kelly! Hyped!YES. Phil would be amazing but yes they would need to make him tone down the sportsbetting talk. He's a great player, with an outgoing personality made for TV, but the fact he never got to #1 and has his fair share of struggles would give him good perspective.

Freddie would also be amazing but wouldn't have the discipline to do his homework and grind out the broadcasts. But who knows, if his back goes out in a few years and he can't compete on the Champions Tour anymore, it might become an interesting option to him. He loves nerding out on golf and playing for fun, so if they let him play practice rounds with the Tour guys as a way to check out the course to do his homework, it might scratch the itch. Also, notice that at 4:42 of the Kapalua broadcast I posted above (

) he pointed out that Ernie changed 3 woods.....nerding out for gearheads. If you watch his Playing Lessons from the Pros, he talks about golf in a very relatable way, I think he'd be great

DL could put you to sleep and McCord s style got old fast. Reminded me of an uncle that would just make up stories

Faldo , Finch, Pepper are fine by me

I think Phil is a fine golfer but annoying when he opens his mouth

He would never do it but Trevino would be fun for a few holes

Based on his career results he should think that. However most of his results from the start of 2018 show otherwise. A few excellent events to start the year including wins on the west coast and Mexico early in 2018/2019 and two top 3's to start this year. Then after the early season events his play has resembled Wile E. Coyote falling off a cliff while holding an ACME umbrella. Phil is going to play the PGA Tour for as long as he can and he should due to his success in the game. No tv work and Champions Tour at this time. His "brand" is worth more when he plays on the PGA Tour and the coverage he gets than he would sitting in a tv tower or playing the Champions Tour.

Do they really need a former pro golfer to do on-course commentary? I think it might be more entertaining if they got some weekend hacker to do it, as they could give the perspective that most of the viewers might have. And maybe they'd be bold enough to say something like 'man, did he really need to toss the grass up in the air for a fifth time? Hit the freakin' ball already.'

Looks like it is Kelly Tilghman making a return to TV, though whether she is replacing DLIII just for the PGA or beyond that in an ongoing role at CBS is uncertain. I think she is a fine choice. She got marginalized amidst all the changes at GC before departing and while she has some baggage, I have always liked her.

I was all in on your POV until a few years ago, Nantz came down with an illness the morning of the broadcast, and with no time to get another host in, they moved Feherty over. It was so robotic it was painful. They actually pulled Bill Macatee from his honeymoon for the final round. Feherty was completely out of his element directing traffic.

Yes, Nantz and the syrup are way overdone, but after that broadcast, I developed a greater appreciation for Nantz' skill. You many not enjoy listening to him, and while that is a part of it, he really is really good at his job.

But the bigger question has to be, WTF were they thinking in the first place throwing him in like that? Was there no audition? If they knew they were hiring a complete noob, then it was on them to get him training. CBS producers are doing a happy dance only because he let them off the hook by quitting.

DL3 was close with the CBS golf brass and they just don’t care or aren’t aware of their product. They’ll take a crap on the viewers for all they care. Nantz was on NLU and said they have just as many commercials as NBC. But they show less golf and fill too much non-commercial time with product placement ads. CBS knows they are under a microscope now, but I don't see them changing much.

Totally get that there are guys suited to the role and whoever thought that Feherty could fill the Nantz role should have been sacked. That doesn’t make Nantz good. Smug, smarmy and completely out of touch with what a modern golf broadcast should be. His appearance on the No Laying Up podcast a few weeks ago was even more painful.

He was good, but I don’t know if I’d want him talking over everyone else and it being the Phil show every week. But he could really get CBS golf out of the doldrums should he want the job. Don’t think Phil is ready to commit to ending his PGA Tour career just yet. And could CBS pay him enough?
