That was a year and a half ago, and his caddy flat out told him he didn't like that play. The player ultimately makes the final decision.

I heard him. Caddy was 110% right. But still doesn't seem to be listening to him or that his caddy is really in his ear about stuff.

 

You don't see it on camera much or at all but there are times I just want the caddy to grab their guy and walk them off to the side for 30 seconds and get them back in the game. Finau was my pick yesterday. Just something to get them to stop and hit the reset button. Get a shot in play and get a little win that can turn into momentum for the next hole.

Sure, some guys will do that. But at the same time a lot of these guys are dealing with dudes with egos, and they are sitting on a cash cow. Rory fired his caddy for doing the exact thing you are talking about.

Kinda average tournament until the back. Another example of how TV coverage was used to determine faint errors. Wish they'd stop using TVs or callins.

@smashdn Its not really a partnership. A caddy is an employee and whether or not he can pull the Pro aside depends on how the relationship is written. If employee wants to keep his job best not grab his employer and demand he be listened to, there are consequences that may not be written.
If, under those circumstances, the employer ignores his thought and listens to the employee, and it turns out to be wrong, it can be the beginning of the end of many employer/employee relationships. Who has more to lose if the decision is wrong, the pro or caddy? The caddy can always go get another job. The Pro can't; if he misses a cut, he makes no money and doesn't feed his family, figuratively. Same is true in the workplace. If an employee doesn't like my decision he can go elsewhere for work and get a paycheck. I can't just walk away from a company disregarding all that built it. I have to think what's best for everybody and what can I live with. Just my 2cents.

Why is it always Phil being the one that is so rebellious when the course setup is difficult. The poor guy is only one about 50 times on the tour and he whines. What a spoiled baby.

Agreed. Plus, it can be hard to appreciate without a comparison, but Rahm is BIG, especially in the legs. Those are freakin' tree trunks down there and the source of a lot of power in transition.

If Rahm had intentionally hit a poor Chip shot only 1 millimeter with a tiny, tiny swing that looked like a waggle, it only would have cost him that 1 shot, and it would have been a par. So it is two shots if accidental but only one shot if it was on purpose? Think about it.

Because if he is not the centre of attention with his golf, he has to do something else to get people talking about it. All ego!

He accidentally caused it to move. That's a one stroke penalty. The other stroke was for him not replacing it. It's not the same as a shot. The rules don't want people to "accidentally" move the ball and not move it back, in case people want to cheat. If he had replaced it to the best of his abilities, he would have had only a one stroke penalty, similar to your tiny chip shot scenario.

Guess it is hard for me to put myself in either their shoes. I would like to think if I was the golfer and I was spiraling out of control on the course I would appreciate my guy trying to calm me down and help steer me back into the race.

I see some of the Rotella teachings not getting followed when guys are just compounding bad shot after bad shot. CBS didn't show a whole lot of Finau (relative to others) after he shot himself out of contention but I would have liked to have seen the interaction a bit more and seen whether he got down and couldn't get it out of his head or whether he suffered from some bad breaks and bad decisions.

Admittedly I was pulling for Finau to win as I like him as a golfer and like his story. Nothing wrong with Rahm winning either though and he certainly put himself in a great position on a tough track.

 

As far as employee/employer relations go, I get paid to do a job. One aspect of my job is to keep us from breaking the law. That being said sometimes I have to step in and stop folks from doing things that everyone thinks is a good idea but is actually not legal or could violate a regulation. As long as I provide evidence for why we can't, and I typically try to propose an alternative way or ways to do what we want but be in compliance, they recognize that is what I am here for. We are all striving for the same goal, make money. We can't make [as much] money if we are paying fines all the time.
