Those are the most brutally painful interviews I've ever seen.

TW's fame is far beyond the game of golf at this point and people will watch him not expecting him to win every tournament. If TW is one thing he's a winner and people don't want to miss seeing a true champion play the game, even if he's lost a step or two.

TW's following at this point is 100% based on his past performances on the golf course -- Tiger slam, winning every tournament he played, winning the US Open with a broken leg, etc. It's nothing about race at this point, although TW's working class upbringing and image wins him big popularity among non-golfers.

Non-professional golf in my area has increased significantly. There are a lot of new golfers taking up the game and tee times are hard to come by unless you book almost 2 days in advance.

Tiger still tips the scales when he plays. It doesn't matter if he wins or loses, if he's playing the rating are vastly higher.

Mr. Short game has a podcast title did Tiger ruin golf. The argument in a nutshell is that views decrease if he isn't playing and the huge number of talented golfers will never be able to stand out the way tiger did. Good show.

Either way. Tiger will get plenty of air time. Heck, he gets a segment the minute he decides to play. If he doesn't play, he'll still get a segment on why he's not playing. As a huge tiger fan i actually kinda like it that way.

He elevated it and nobody else can keep it afloat at the same level. Maybe it will for a while, but I'm sure if the metrics don't support it, the advertising dollars would eventually go away. But like all other sports, there should be another transcendent talent coming along in a few years. When Tiger is about to ride off into the sunset, there will probably be another phenom coming along and tearing things up. That person is probably still playing junior golf right now so hard to tell. Tiger Woods didn't ruin golf, and neither did Jack. They elevated the game for the next great to take it even higher.

So in order to maximise how much they are making out of the broadcast post-Tiger they will need to give more value to their sponsors. My point is that when Tiger does go away there will be less people watching, we can be pretty sure of that. The TV companies spend these massive sums on the television rights because it then allows them to sell advertising time to make their money back.

With less people watching post-Tiger, the advertising space they provide becomes less valuable and provides less of a return to the advertisers. How do they make it more valuable to advertisers? Give them more of it, more of the time. We’ll see what happens with the PGL, sounds like a really cool idea that would definitely change golf for both tours. personally don’t watch a ton of the live Golf coverage, just keep up with the results or I’ll tune in to the back nine on Sunday.

would definitely recommend juniors getting involved with Golf. Not so much for aspirations of becoming a pro, since it is such a difficult sport to make a living in, but as they say it is definitely a sport you should be able to play forever. As I’m getting older I’m realizing I would much rather play something like golf then another sport that has a greater injury risk.

What are you not understanding about this?

The value of the product goes down without Tiger because without Tiger there are less viewers. Even if that is just for the next 4-5 years where there is greater potential that he will play. As a result, if the value that sponsors get drops because less people are watching the sponsors will want something for their money. My view is that for golf fans and golf in general that is not a good thing as it will turn more people off.

The PGA Tour will make golf look like NASCAR, wrestling or a grotesque reality show to make as much money as they can.

Not sure what else to say... if more sponsorships can be sold, they will be. If a new revenue stream is available, they aren't going to wait for Tiger to retire before pursuing it.

Conversely, Tiger's disappearance isn't going to magically make new types of sponsorships viable.

The Tour and the broadcasters will always seek the most money from sponsors and advertisers, regardless of Tiger. When Tiger disappears, nobody is going to say "wow, never saw this coming, let's go try to sell something that we never could sell before".

Sponsors know the score too. Fedex extended the Fedex Cup in 2017, a time when nobody thought Tiger was coming back (including Tiger).

 

Your argument seems to be that NBC (for example) would compensate for lower demand for ads by... increasing the supply of ads. How does that work?

Nah, it’s not that there would be lower demand for ads but that there would be lower value from them. They make them more valuable by shoehorning more exposure for the advertiser in there. Rather than one mention, let’s make it two or three. Let’s introduce more graphics showing the sponsors logo. Fairly simply concept in how it works.

Now's a good time for the golf community to start sponsoring golf in the public and private schools...... Golf has a wonderful opportunity during these trying times. Outdoor sport that you can practice social distancing.

By that time in the broadcast, I'm 3 Manhattans deep so it doesn't bother me as much as it should. I really don't understand why CBS hasn't tried someone else other than Nantz at this point.

Restricted TV viewing of a major doesn't seem a good sign. Especially when fans aren't allowed on the course. So I followed TigerTracker to sort of keep up.
