Tell me about your utility iron

Recently switched from the Srixon u45/65 to a set of the King Utility black. Really liking them so far. I have ordered some shafts to try in them. I got a few of my set Steelfiber i110 S and some Tour AD 95x shafts. Really loving the feel and adjustability of this club. Was having some gapping issues and this has solved it.

Got a gapr mid 3 iron with a project x rifle 5.0. Love it very forgiving and long. Can hit it high and low.

Mizuno MP-20 HMB with Hzrdus Black 6.5 85g Handcrafted. Bent 1 degree week, 1 degree upright and four inches of lead tape (the light shaft dramatically reduced the swing weight).

Club head speed about 100 mph -- ball comes out hot and low with a slight draw. Carries 230-235 but with lots of roll. Typically finishes 245-255. This puts it right between my 3W or 4W (haven't settled on one yet) and 7W. If I'm hitting into a green, I'm playing one of my fairways. But the HMB is fantastic as a driving iron.

19* Bridgestone J33 Airmuscle with a Speeder 904HB. I'll use it in lieu of my 7WD or 22* hybrid when conditions warrant.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I'm in the srixon fan club.  Have a U65 4 iron w/ an amt X100.  Also have the mizuno hi fli's in the 5&6 irons ti x100 which are also really nice for this and the mp18 was considered for the 4 iron spot.  U65 is a bit thicker, but pleasing to the eye and gives me the confidence over the hifli..  Launches plenty high enough and just goes straight.....one of my favorite clubs ever!

I love my Titleist t500 3 iron, I have tried my friends Srixon a few times but I’m not as consistent as with the Titleist.

Thinking off adding the t501. 1 iron as an option from the tee

I have the U510 1 iron - Driver, 1 iron, 3 iron, etc. It's a great club but I find it most useful from the tee - I don't need the length from the fairway on any holes on my regular course. I find it a little tough to hit consistently from the fairway, and looking at my Arccos data I miss right 60% of the time (and that's pretty unusual for me). I think the shaft has a bit to do with it.

Off the tee, though... it's awesome. I can happily get it out 270 metres, or punch it 180. It's long, straight, it's low spin and rolls for days. Probably a bit too low spin to hold greens but I'm not good enough to hunt greens from 270m away anyway.

I’ve been happy with my purchase. I bought a Titleist 716 TMB 2 iron with a DG x100 shaft in it to match my iron set at the time (Mizuno MP 67’s) that had DG X100’s in them, but fast forward a few years, back problems, arthritis so I decided to get a new set of clubs. I bought a set of 716 TMB’s and liked the shafts they came with so much (XP 115’s) I threw one in my 2 iron. I love it!

im sure if I was looking for something that would only get play off a tee, i may have opted for something in graphite, but I love the TMB off the tee and off the deck with a steel shaft in it.

I pulled the 4 iron out of the bag this year and switched to a Z U85 #3 20* with an i95 shaft because there was not enough gap between my 4 and 5. It has been one of the best moves I have made. The U85 is stupid easy to get up, flies high, straight and long. And as someone else noted, it feels just great.

He uses mizuno mp fli hi 'cut muscle' model in 24*, sometimes 21*.
These seem to have more bounce than most current DI. Srixon and Callaway made ones with similar bounces,

but their newer models feel like they launch the ball more explicitly.

There are wonderful choices now.

The mp fli hi and bridgestone one were about it for DI for like a solid decade!

I’ve tried the U85, Mizuno HMB, GAPR LO and TMB. My favorite is my current 2 iron the U500. It is very easy to launch and flight if needed. I don’t have an issue from the fairway with it.

to replace your 4 I would recommend the u500 and a heavier graphite  shaft that plays similar to your iron shafts or go with steel. I think most modern utility irons are meant to be played with graphite but that is just my opinion. U500 is a solid option for sure.

I put a U510 3 iron in my bag earlier this month. It's chunky but forgiving, easy off the tee and off the deck. I can't see me going back to an equivalent lofted hybrid.

My irons have parallel tip hosels, so I refit the 4i with a SteelFiber 780 HLS Hybrid shaft R Flex 75 gr.

Solid club off tee, but I need to work on it off fairway.

Would your set 4i work with a more helpful shaft?

GAPR Mid 18* for me. It's low enough that off the tee it is a monster with ample run, but still inviting enough to hit comfortably out of the fairway and some gnarly rough as well. I used to play a G Crossover 22* in place of a 4 iron originally and this reminds me of that, albeit more compact, better feel, and much better sound.

Well, with my inner-ho unleashed I placed an order for the SIM DHY 2 iron but with the 90g Stiff Diamana Thump Shaft tipped 1/2 inch (the stock UDI shaft). Will report back once the item is in hand and I've had a few weeks with it.

I have a U65 3i with that junk orange stock shaft. I was hitting nothing but moon balls with it that went no where so I tipped it a full inch and it's working much better.

I actually go 565 5i, u65 3i then a M1 5w.

I've been bagging the 2i for a while with the Miyazaki shaft. I've loved it -- but as my swing speed with long irons has crept up to ~102-104, the spin has become an issue. I have to really concentrate on smoothing it, and shortening my backswing, or it is duckhook city.

I've been contemplating whether to reshaft it into an X-flex or move up to the U85. Seems a lot of folks are reshafting it into steel?

I tried the U500, but hated the feel of the Hzrdus Black Smoke 90HY - the super low torque made it feel terrible. It had a nice low ball flight, and way less spin. But if I caught it, the club was too long for what I needed, and the feel affected my confidence.

I've also got the U65 23*, and it has the same spin problem, and it is too easy to overpower the shaft.

Gapr Lo with the Tensei white 90x, and it's great if I need another option off the tee. Don't love it off the deck, though.

I also got a Forged Tec 4i to go with my King Forged CBs. Same $-taper shaft, but 120S instead of 130X that I have in the set. Really helped my gapping.
