What’s the consensus on this, specifically with the new Special Select line? Trying to decide between Special Select Newport and a restored Tei3 Newport. Prioritizing feel here, is it worth the few extra bucks for a classic?

Feel is subjective so no one will really be able to tell you what feel you like best. Do you like lighter or heavier putters? Also do you want to oil and take care of the TeI3?

My only putter has been a 2 ball from when I started playing about a year ago but have had some success with my dad’s old anser. And I’ll do whatever I need to to keep it nice.

It's worth the extra few bucks if you make more putts with it and it gives you the confidence you need. Putting is mental so if the older one gives you the edge then what is that worth to you?

New line is excellent, however, the Tei3 feels better. I'd go with that

Buy a few older pre 2005 and try them.Then try a 2012+ and it seems miss out Insert range and go on to New 2020 range.Seem to be popular and look good!

The Tei3 seems to be an All Time Classic.

I like the feels of the older putters. My 'go-to' gamer that I've played the best with is a 340g Mil-Spec. You really have to test and see what you like. At some point I've owned a 2016 select NP, Newport AOP, T22 NP2, and 350g Circa 62 No 3.

I've pared down my set to the Mil-Spec, Circa 62, and T22. I'm about to post the T22 up for sale since I putt so well with the Mil-Spec and have the Circa 62 to change it up if need be. I dont want/need putters sitting around.

the new ones (last 4-5 years) -- all due respect to scotty -- are trash. no feel, inserts, alumimum vs steel, etc.

 

i would rock an old one-piece-milled carbon or platinum before the ones on the market right now.

Have to agree with jak77 on the mil spec 34” 340g head. Best feeling Cameron I’ve ever rolled and I have an original TeI Newport. I always stop by the putters at PGASS and roll the new putters but none of the new Scotty’s feel good enough to even think about buying and I buy a lot of putters. ?

The only SS I have had a chance to roll is the Del Mar. I didn't mind the feel. It is about what I expected form a solid milled face. I am partial to the older carbon Scottys though. As others have said, feel is so subjective that a bunch of strangers on an internet forum can not tell you what you will perceive as the best feeling putter.

The milling has improved on the newer models for sure. However, I prefer the designs and finishes on a majority of the older models. Yes, the new Special Selects are much better than the previous couple of releases, but the feel of the TeI3's, Studio Stainless, and carbon heads are still the best.

I feel as if its not necessarily an old v new issue, but more of a model material spec conversation, if you like GSS, studio style, if you like copper tei3, if you like a firmer feel from a one piece, the special select should be perfect, some people really like the insert putters from the last couple years, and to each their own, scotty hasn't changed much and can still make any putter he wants to, just like the t22 which is exactly the same if not better than the tel3

I love my 2020 Special Select. Even more after a little acetone to the red/gold "mcdonalds" paint fill they chose.

Yah, I think the 2020 select line is a massive upgrade over previous lines

the more I see of putters that have been stripped of most of their paint, the more I like it

especially the face and the neck. DId you strip that as well?

I left the face since it was just black fill, and left the neck as is. Looks really sharp, to me at least.

Original TEi3 will be super light headweight, but will feel the softest. 2007-2012 will solid milled with no insert and have a soft feel... they also have the sole weights to dial in headweight. The new special select are very firm feeling.

Can’t beat a 340g Mil Spec even though it weights in at 346g..!!

To me it's all about feel. I've only used the older TeI3 models, but I'm hoping to get a newer model soon and feel the difference to see which I enjoy more

Had both and like both. The new line is better without the inserts. I have a circle T 2.5 timeless from the new line and I do have to say I like it.

And the 340’s are hard to find. I think there is one on eBay right now.

The new line works really well with newer balls (unsurprisingly the ProV1). It's been 15 years since i last bought a putter and have a Newport 2.5 on the way.

 

Imho, good Scotty's have never felt too soft or too hard, just .... right.

Buy both! I have 303 stainless Scottys and Teryllium Scottys, and they both have different feels. Both are great too. Just depends on what you like.

I have the above Studios and have no interest in the Special Select.

Have always been a bigger bettinardi fan than Scotty.. but I went retro and love this guy… personally felt like once he started going with inserts the quality went down. Again, I say that with some bias but I was always open to try the putters.
