Ninety Freaking Two

::begin rant::

Yesterday I started out pretty good.

Easy two putt birdie on the first hole, and like most everyone here would have thought...we're off!

Yanked my 160 yard approach shot deep into the forest on the second hole and the real fun began.

Subsequent holes consisted of missed greens, skulled chips and 3 putts. (skulled chips!!! 3 of them!!!)

Of course I lost every bet, no skins, no greenies, no Nassau's.

On the plus side, being so far off course, I found about half a dozen shag balls...

Ninety freaking two. (although, if you told me I shot 122 I'd have believed it)

::rant over::

First world problem for sure, the next skins game is Sunday and I'm going lights out!

Been there, man. I play to a 4 but once or twice a season I'll put up a stinker 90+ round.. Some days you have it and some days you don't.. and then some days you REALLY don't.. All you can do is laugh about it and move on. Many times I've shot that bad round then bounced back with one of my best.. That's golf for you!

Know the feeling. Been playing much better later with several low 70's scores but this weekend I through up some wonderous high 80s scores. These lovely rounds including a few bladed bunker shots, a few topped drives and even blowing lag putts 15 feet by the hole. And I was really encouraged at turning the corner on repairing my swing too. Hopefully next round out will be better. Otherwise yikes.

I'm a 6.1 index right now, and of my last 20 revision scores, my worst round is a 93, and my second worst round is an 84.

Was playing a new course I have never played with people I had never played with, and had a sudden onset of the toe-shanks with driver. It was embarrassing, but it happens, unfortunately.

Birdie on the first is always bad mojo for me. Let's just say last time I did that it was a triple digit day.

I did that the first time I ever broke Par on a side.

1-under on the front and 9-over on the back to shoot a cool 80.

Well, I shot 79 yesterday. 8 cap ( 5 course)

Got beat by 2 people in the gross column ( club only pays two places gross)

Got beat by eight 15 or higher caps in the net payout.

3 birdies/ no skins ( Birdied #1 handicap hole, but the club goes on net for skins)

Hit one to 6ft but someone did better for the CP.

I feel your pain......

I had a stretch where I was struggling to break 90 at my home course this summer. Then Sunday night we played a course in town that I hadn't played in 3 years and used to struggle with. Smooth 42-37 for the first sub 80 round in over 2 years lol. Still have never shot lower than 84 at my home course, slope/rating is somehow nearly identical but my home course sure seems way more difficult.

Some clubs have a wide variety of handicaps. Play only gross skins and you'll lose half the club eventually.

Da boyz I play with sometimes play, for skins, half handicap/full stroke and sometimes full handicap/half stroke.

I have been a member of 2 different clubs in my area, and they both played the member games the same way.

$20 buy in for everything:

$10 goes to the “dogfight”, which is a stableford competition based on points.

Eagle = 4pts, Birdie = 3pts, Par = 2pts, Bogey = 1pt, Double = 0pts and you pick it up. So 36 points is shooting even par, and 18 points is bogey golf.

Everyone has rolling points quotas.

+/- 1 on the day, no change next time out.

+/- 2 to 3, your points move up/down 1 next time.

+/- 4 or more, your points move up/down 2 next time.

This is usually won by the higher handicaps because it’s easier for them to post a high number. For someone with a points quota of 18, they can have a good day for them shooting 85 (+13) and be +5 on their points. For someone with a points quota of 34, they would have to shoot 69 (-3) to be +5.

The other $10 goes to skins/closest to pin/Par 3s. This is where the good players make their money. They are more likely to make the birdies/proximities/low gross on Par 3s.

This incentivizes everyone to get in it because there is something for everyone. Your double-digit indexers have a good chance at winning the dogfight because it’s net, and your single indexers have a good chance at winning the gross/proximity pay-outs.

I've never played a lot of "points" games, or Stableford for that matter. The club I played with most of my golfing "career" played the same game every time. 4 man teams, 2 best balls, gross. Our team game also paid birdies so even if a team didn't win, if they had a fair number of birdies that day they'd go home with a bit more $ than they showed up with. And the team game had the added advantage of being able to win on a day when you didn't have your best stuff. Of course you could also lose on a day when you did but,,,,,,,,,,, :classic_biggrin:

If one believes the handicap system is a good way to,,,,,, ummmm,,,,,, handicap an event they can't be too enamored with moving up and down quotas based on a single round since one's handicap seldom does that.

I mean think about it. You're on a hot streak. You shoot +5 points one day and the next round you're" losing" 2 points ($) right off the bat since your handicap may not have even changed by a single stroke. So you then shoot what WOULD have been +2 points that next round and get bupkis because of the 2 point higher quota that day. Being someone who's never really played a points game regularly it just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe if I did play it regularly I'd change my mind - not sure.

But what about the middle of your group. What do they have a chance at ? Both skins and points ? Neither ? Hmmmmmmm. Probably won't get closest and with a number of better players would probably get "cut" on any birdie he makes as it would most likely be on a relatively easy hole. Will he win a nice net prize with many points won by all those higher handicappers around ?

So maybe it's just a matter of what one gets used to ? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We e always called it the “the first hole birdie jinx”. And whenever someone birdies the first hole, the rest of us are sure to remind him of it!?

That is frustrating to birdie the #1 handicap hole and get nothing.  Someone with two pops make a par to match?  That’s why we went to half stroke skins, the natural birdie should top the net one.

I am lucky enough to not have too many blow up rounds on the course.  But the worst is when I want to practice and have the swing of a 36 index.  Nice day, have some free time and setup on the range.  Want to work on the 150 yard shot so bring out the 8 and the 9.  Fire 4 straight 9 irons off the hosel dead right.  Want to get out of that mojo so switch to a 5 iron or something.  4 shots off the toe and 3 chunks.  Too scared to even try a chip or pitch at the practice area.

Pack it up and head home.  Tomorrow is another day.

Pro's shoot in the 80's which is like us hittin' the 90's. We rarely see these guys way down the board. Don't worry about it. S%*t happens, especially in this insane game.

If you look at the stats page on my GHIN app, for the 2020 season it reads:
- Handicap: 5.6

- Highest Score: 93

- Lowest Score: 72

So yeah, I feel ya. That 93 felt like a 1003 to me.
