What does a avg 6 handicap shoot?

Golferpimp1

Recommended Posts

Just joined a club, and today the regular group asked me what my handicap is. I havent been keeping it, and actually never have. Played to about a 1 or 2 for a few years in school, but now im 5 years removed. I usually shoot between 77 and 83 or so. I always want to say my handicap is about 7 or 8, but I know our handicap system is all jacked up, its not truly the avg of your scores, since you drop the highest 10 or something like that. Any help???

Thanks,

Get your new club to sponsor your handicap and post as many legitimate scores as you can verify.

My answer if in your situation is just what you said.....I don't have one yet, but my scores range from 77-to-83.

Handicaps are never the average of your scores, they are 96 per cent of the average over par of the best 10 of your last twenty. If you are using the club's computer to calculate and store it, it will have the data about slope ratings stored, and perform that part of the calculation for you.

A person who averaged 6 strokes over par in his or her golf would be about a 4 handicap. A 6 handicap would average 81 on their rounds that counted toward the handicap, and would likely be scoring in the high 80s or low 90s on a really bad day, and down to 77 or so on a really good day.

Try explaining to the "scratch" golfer that shooting 72 on that pitch and putt course rated 68 isn't scratch. But seriously if you shoot between 77-83 it would be very course dependent. 77-83 at Butler National would be a lot better than a 6 handicap.
frankly I think its absurd how it is calculated. Would make much more sense if it was just a straight average and nothing else. Maybe take into account slope etc, but none of this dropping high rounds etc.
Great idea, let's get rid of ESC too. Don't mind me while I 20 putt this last hole to inflate my average. :P

I second this observation. Also, if one's answer to a handicap question doesn't come with the word "point" in it, consider not listening.

Unless of course they are giving you their course handicap not handicap index.

I am about a 6 (6.2 actually :D ) and will shoot from the mid 70s to the mid 80s most of the time. Some times I'll shoot a bit lower and have scared 90 a couple of times this season.

Or the , "Geez, I don't know where that 69 cam from , I only average 81. I guess I just play better in tourneys with tucked pins." :secret:

Get a handicap and post all ESC scores. Sandbaggers should be lined up and fired into with Top-Flites! :vava:
pardon my ignorance, whats "ESC"
ESC is equitable scoring control.
It's the rule in the USGA handicap system that sets the maximum score you can post for a hole. For instance, I'm a 2.8, the maximum score I can post for a hole is +2 over par. That number changes with your handicap. If I shoot a 78 and the round includes two triple bogeys, my adjusted score would actually be a 76 as far as handicap posting goes.
(It doesn't mean you write down a lower score for a hole on the scorecard, you just adjust your posted score.)
It stops people from intentionally or unintentionally bumping their handicap up by blowing up on a hole.
Obviously there are other ways to "adjust" your handicap, as the guy who netted 62 and 63 in my course championship can tell you. :P

BTW, I wasn't taking a shot at you with my comment. Averaging scores for sake of competition just isn't a very good way of leveling the playing field, ESC is one part of the handicap system that's put in place to try to make things fair. Granted the whole system's reliability is directly based on the integrity of those posting.

That's strange. I use myscorecard.com.

My USGA HC Index is 9.1 and my Trend HC is 9.9 but my average score is 84.8. One of us is wrong.
It really depends on rating and slope of the course you typically play on. Could be you're both right.
if im not mistaken, you should only shoot your index about 25% of the time. that's what i've been told anyhow.
Your correct! Those of us with a true handicap (not sandbaggers) will only shoot our index 25% of the time.

Just because someone does not know there handicap does not mean they don't have a basic understanding of what it is or how its calculated.

I would have to agree. Also just because someone says "about" doesn't mean they don't know what their handicap is. I'm a 4.6 as of last month but range between that and 5.5 or so depending on the month. When some asks what my handicap is I usually say "about a 5". I don't see the point in using the "point" with the exact index in casual conversation.
