I'm from Aus where handicap system is a lot different. Once you're below 4 you go down 0.1 for every shot you have under your handicap on any given day and go out 0.1 when you play worse (0.1 if between 1 and 5 worse and 0.2 if more than 5 worse) so it takes a while to get down to a low handicap. So I don't know much about the US system but if this average of best ten of last twenty is correct does that mean that to be off plus 4 as many claim they would have to be 40 under for their best ten? It seems that it's easy in your system to get a low handicap but not easy to get a super low handicap i.e. plus 4.

Now when I play my buds, I'm a 3.7 factor... so I get 4 strokes on the toughest 4 holes, my partners get 18, 19 and 11 respectively.

Now guess how often I win...well let's say I shot 73, 81, and 76 the last 3 rounds ..

73 -4 = 69 should be a winner right ?????? ... uh no.......the 18 shoots 86...86-18= 68 !!!!!

Now I shoot UNDER my cap (73 = 1.7) and I LOSE!

Personally I hate the system. I lost on the 81 obviously... and the 76 was a tie... so I gain 1/2 point in 3 rounds.. :black eye:

Funny though how when money's on the line people play better than potential, but NEVER play in tournaments...

Just for comparison my high round this year is 87, my low is 73

Sorry for the rant.. lmao :diablo:
You have vanity handicaps, sandbaggers and cheaters. And since you don't need a witness to post a score, I don't have much faith in the handicap system...at all.

:D
The system at my club (and possibly the rest of the UK) kind of prevents this. Once you have a club handicap, the only scorecards that can be used for handicap adjustments are those shot in club competitions, and so there is always a minimum of at least one 'witness' to your score. It also means that most if not all players are trying to play to their best as there is a club cup / monthly medal on the line.

The down side is that if you don't play in many comps, your club handicap can bear little relation to your actual playing handicap, althought I think this is being addressed by the need for players to have at least X number of cards / scores (shot in competitions - I can't remember the exact number) registered each year for the handicap to remain valid.

Those indexes seem a little high unless your 77 and 78 are occasional and not usual.
That is unless your home course rating and slope are on the low side. That is the thing too, course ratings can move your index +/- 2, so that also adds to there being no Average 6 capper.

I second this observation. Also, if one's answer to a handicap question doesn't come with the word "point" in it, consider not listening.
I post a minimum of 2 rounds/week (weather permitting). I play pretty much exclusively one of the following

1) Organized golf where the scorecards include indexes and strokes (pulled directly from our club's handicap computer)

2) Friendly rounds with buddies where we are not competing.

I honestly do not know exactly what my index is right now (other than recalling that last Friday it was either 4.6 or 4.9 - can't remember, but I got 5 strokes on the course regardless). I don't recall simply because it is information that is not useful to me 99% of the time. If it matters it is provided to me. I used to pretty much know all the time when our indexes only changed monthly. 2x per month is somehow more than I can naturally keep up with.

If I were traveling somewhere anticipating it mattering, I would look it up. Otherwise ....
frankly I think its absurd how it is calculated. Would make much more sense if it was just a straight average and nothing else. Maybe take into account slope etc, but none of this dropping high rounds etc.
Just read Rank's post above. Playing against others that keep an honest handicap, if yours is honest, is a very good equalizer. Remember that not all players have similar spreads in their scores. Some vary wildly and some are very close. But if everyone is honest and diligent, the system works well.

Which is fine...but you'd think more golfers would have a basic understating of what a handicap is and how it's calculated.
Try explaining to the "scratch" golfer that shooting 72 on that pitch and putt course rated 68 isn't scratch. But seriously if you shoot between 77-83 it would be very course dependent. 77-83 at Butler National would be a lot better than a 6 handicap.

I shot 81 on the Home Course during a practice round for the US Open Qualifying, 7547 yards long, cold and windy. Great round by my standards, differential of 4. Glad I only played the practice round though.
im a 5.5 at the moment and here are my last 20 rounds:
81, 80, 76, 78, 77, 81, 81, 72, 74, 82, 78, 82, 82, 79, 74, 78, 73, 73, 75, 77
Great scores, very consistent. I would have figured those scores for a 3hdcp.

What length and slope/rating do you play?

Been playing for years but never have posted a handicap, lazy I guess. Anyway, does a true handicap assume you putt out everything and play the ball down? I typically do when I am playing alone, but if the rules are play it up for $, then I do that too. Even our club championship has a club length improvement, which I think is stupid, so I was wondering.

thanks. i play 4 different courses on a regular basis. here are the slopes/ratings of them. not the hardest/longest courses to play, thats for sure. if i played 7000 yard courses, i guess my hcp would be lower, right? i dont understand how the hcp is calculated at all:

6785 yds 73.5/129
6233 yds 69.2/123
6271 yds 70.4/120
6302 yds 71.0/132

Yes, if you shot those same scores on courses with higher ratings and slopes, which often correspond to longer courses, your index would be lower.

I was mostly curious as my index is just a hair lower than yours but I am no where near as consistent, but as one's handicap is most representative of one's potential and my good scores outweigh my bad scores for index purposes.

I usually play 6600-7000 72.5/134.

The course I moved from was 6900 74/140

I am currently a 1.3 index and my average score is a fraction under 78. That average score may seem high, but I play a difficult course with all but one round in the last 20 played at either 6533 yards, 73.1/139 or 6889 yards, 74.8/139. My scores range between 71 and 85. Handicap will be very dependent on the course rating and slope and many forget that a handicap is supposed to represent a "potential" not an "average".

I'm a 13.8 index. Average score this year about 87. Average score last 20 rounds = 88.5 due to playing tougher courses.

My HCP goes up when I play courses 6400+, with fast undulating greens and thick, greenside rough. When I play a higher percentage of courses in the 6100-6400 range, with slower or flat greens and less severe rough, I slide down toward a 8 HCP.

I believe the course rating system is also severely flawed. Speed of the green and type/severity/length of the rough is much more important to my score than distance + obstacles which the rating is primarily based on.
