College Equipment

Recommended Posts

Do colleges that are sponsored by big name brands such as Nike or adidas get free equipment from Nike or TaylorMade? Or is it only apparel they get?

Thanks

It depends on the contract that each school has with the company, but yes, players at schools that have contracts with companies like Adidas or Nike do get free equipment if they want to play that equipment. As far as I know, no schools require their players to use the sponsoring company's equipment, but they do often require them to wear the apparel including shoes. I personally know of one instance where a large company's shoes did not fit a player, so they custom made shoes for him.

Acceptance of equipment does not impair a player's amateur status:
6-2/9 Policy on Issue of Free Equipment to Amateur Golfers

Q. Is it permissible for an amateur golfer to accept free merchandise?

A. Yes. An amateur golfer of golf skill or reputation may accept golf balls, clubs, merchandise, clothing or shoes free of charge from anyone dealing in such equipment provided no advertising is involved. see Note to Rule 6-2 (Lending Name or Likeness).

Amateur golfers are warned that they must on no account sell any equipment received free of charge from manufacturers. If they do they will be liable to forfeit their Amateur Status for a breach of the Definition of "Amateur Golfer."
Yeah we're a D1 school that's sponsored by Nike but we don't get free clubs. We get some really nice discounts, but the money still comes out of our own pockets. The exception to this is that you can get individually sponsored and get free clubs and stuff (our number 1 guy is sponsored by Titleist so he gets tons of clubs for free). We do get a decent amount of gear (shoes, shirts, pants, hats, workout gear, sweats) that's all Nike so it definitely shows that we are sponsored by them, but we don't get quite the hookup like the football team (like 10 pairs of shoes, all kinds of underarmour-like stuff, sweats of every kind, etc). We have a sweet deal, but it's not like some of the other D-1 teams (example: UNLV has a private jet and basically anything they want).

No different than any other sport at a big college, football players aren't paying for their cleats and pads, basketball players aren't paying for their shoes and warm-ups, tennis players aren't paying for their rackets, etc. It's all 'equipment' needed for the sport, and in most cases supplied by the university.

But warm ups and cleats dont cost thousands of dollars and college does not bring in revenue.

Cleats may not cost thousands of dollars, but in football for example, there is roughly 90 guys on the team, and all have to have pads, helmets, shoes for turf and grass, etc...

When I played, we got everything free.

Yeah, do the math.
Football helmet: $300
Shoulder Pads :$300
Cleats $100
Other Pads(knee/hip/thigh):$50

That equals out to at least $750 dollars per player and does not take in to account cleats for different conditions and helmets and pads for practice(which are usually separate from game day pads). So in total it would cost about $67,500 to outfit a 90 man roster.

That is the USGA rule, however NCAA rules are more strict on free stuff. You will see the top D1 programs fully hooked up with most manufacturers. These guys get tour everything if they want it. However, technically the OEMs give the clubs to the school who in turn distributes to players to avoid violation. A lot goes on between player and manufacturer over the summer, but it's hard for the NCAA to crack down on that.

As far as non-top 50 go, there are discounts on clubs with almost every manufacturer. It ranges from cost to 35% off retail. Usually upgraded shafts are a really cheap upcharge.

It really all depends on how good your team performs. I know of top D3 programs where guys get free clubs and the school gets balls/shoes/gloves/apparel for free.

Good point. I think the OEMs give the equipment to the schools who in turn give it to their players to use. However, once they are finished with it, it has to be returned to the school or the player has the option to purchase it at a significant discount.

I went to UF and while I did not personally play on the team I have one very good friend and a couple of aquaintences who did. They got hooked up with anything under the sun. My buddy was playing a full tour issued TM set. I know one guy had a GSS cameron that he snapped in half during a round stashed in his closet. UF used to be primarily a PING school but its really up to the individual player what they want.

I play for a top 50 program. We get whatever we want in terms of clubs but we are titleist glove and ball. Clubs are dependent on weather or coach feels that it is neccassary. It is not as if we can ask for a putter every week or such. Also it how good you are relative to your teamates depends on weather or not you get stuff.

Correctamundo... I knew I forgot something. You're definitely right about the free while you're at school then you have to pay for it after. I'm pretty sure the prices were pretty cheap for what they had though.

I played for a smaller college in Louisiana. We got a pretty good discount on clubs, but had to pay out of our own pocket. The school got a discount on our custom golf balls that had our mascot on them. WE got the balls for free though.
