Tiger as a Golf Course Designer

Recommended Posts

What are your thoughts?
This morning, I ended up finding the finish of the HSBC broadcast on TGC. At one point, the European announcers had some comments that went something like this:
A: Tiger is really in bunkers right now.
B. He is a golf course architect.
A. He should really enjoy the bunkers at (some course in Australia??)...

After hearing the commentary, I though: if he hasn't built a single course, is he really a golf course designer? I started a book, does that make me a novelist?

Second, I got to wondering about his ability as a architect and the pros/cons of pros designing courses. Some have been very good (Crenshaw) and some have been awful (Norman). We all know Tiger will really be more of a "supervisor" than a true golf course designer.

1. If any of his course are public, will you play them?
2. Will you pay extra to play his courses?
3. Will golf writers have the balls to say his courses are terrible?

All these guys are not the chief architects they just provide some of their own input into the course. Norman works with Bob Harrison and im sure Tiger has some fancy golf course architect as well. Tiger is very traditional and the courses on the Melbourne Sandbelt, some of which were built by A. Mackenzie are admired by Tiger who prefers that type of bunker and green design. This is what they are referring to, so yes i think his traditional beliefs will have a strong influence in the course design he and his team implements.

Good question.

It would be interesting to understand what he sees when he tees up.

What he thinks golf is all about.

Good luck with your book.

What is it about?
It is about a guy who is named as a "suspect" in a murder by the police. Because they do not have enough evidence to charge him, he is "free." Nevertheless, he gets to deal with thing like losing his job, protesters at his home, paying for a legal defense, and trying to prove he is innocent.

He is INDEED an architect- having designed over 200 courses in his career. To go along with his 73 wins and 18 majors... ;)

my guess is that Tiger has a great feel for making a great golf course..... He is a student of the game through and through.....not too mention....I would bet that Tiger will not involve himself with any venture that does not basically have a unlimited budget....

He has a golf course in the makings in the mountains of NC..... cant wait to play it

Good one! LOL.

As for Tiger, the one in Dubai that is under construction is on hold (financial difficulties), also one in NC and in Mexico in the planning stages. Don't know who the real architect is.

Personally, with some exceptions, I don't think people who play golf for a living make the best golf course architects.

At this stage of the game he probably doesn't deserve the Designer/Architect title, but more a consultant. Just like the clubs, he is not the club designer but has some input and gets to put his name on it. But behind it all they really want the brand name. I'm pretty sure the real desinger/architect is working his butt off to make sure the project does not flop.

His course in Dubai Al Ruwaya was scheduled to open in late 2009............It is late 2009 which means that the process of designing the course is already done, so Tiger Woods has already done what he has needed to do. It is now a matter of the course growing in. So yes he is an architect.

Last I heard that course in Dubai wasn't even half finished. Recession is hitting everywhere.

Since you mentioned Jack, he was quoted earlier this year as saying Tiger knows absolutely nothing about course design at this point. Just as he knew absolutely nothing when he started out. It will remain to be seen if Tiger ever becomes a serious designer (he is smart enough) or just a guy who looks like he is.

 • 4 weeks later...

In the next few years, it is going to be very interesting.

1. Through no fault of his own, his projects in Dubai and the Cliffs are in serious trouble. Both projects are built around residential development. Dubai is basically bankrupt and the US residential market is in the toilet.

2. Bryon Bell, who is running is design business, may get the boot b/c of his role in hiding things from Elin.

I have a feeling that Tiger's course design opportunities will vanish for quite a period of time as all the repercussions take their toll. They will all blame the economy, but right now he is just isn't going to get any opportunities because of his affairs.
