Not to nitpick Paul, but in the '87 Open he was playing a 90 compression Maxfli HT. The lanky sod managed to hit me in the shoulder with one at the Lawrence Batley tournament a few weeks later. Given my current dicky shoulder I'm thinking of trying for some compo.

I think he was a FootJoy man back then too as far as the shoes went.

Cheers Mat, updated accordingly as I too suspected that he was wearing FootJoys from the various archive photos that I looked at. Great info about the ball but not so great about that shoulder !!!

Wow, in 1992 majors were being won with persimmon woods, not that long ago in the grand scheme of things, seems like a lifetime ago now, things sure changed quickly.

Great post The Gachet!

I think Faldo had Mizuno footwear in the 1996 Masters?

To continue the shoe theme, I reckon he was back with Foot Joy Classics on his plates at Muirfield in '92 too. If I remember rightly, there was some sort of spanner in the works with his Stylo contract about then. I remember him wearing Foot Joys at that year's PGA Championship and it making the papers as Stylo weren't, by all accounts, very happy.

As for '96, I may be wrong but I think that around that time he'd signed a deal with Florsheim for his footwear.

And here's me thinking it was only my partner who was obsessed with shoes.

Great find on the pic of clubs from the '96 Masters!

I spent a lot of time watching him Monday through Wednesday at the practice rounds that week. I'm not sure if they kept bringing him new 5 woods, or if he was having it reshafted constantly. He kept putzing with it as though they couldn't get the flex right... just something I have a great memory of for some reason...

Mat, only after delving through more pictures and books it appears that he was still wearing Stylo shoes in 1991 but then at the 1992 US PGA he is clearly wearing black FootJoy Classics and they appear to be exactly the same as what he was wearing a month earlier at Muirfield. Thanks !

Strange what you remember.

I can't remember what I had for breakfast that morning half the time, but if someone says 'Can you remember what shoes Nick Faldo wore on the Sunday of the 1992 Open Championship?' I'm in with 'Black FJ classics with the brogue-style toecap' faster than you can say 'Have you ever been tested for Aspberger's Mat...?'

For what it's worth, here's a picture of the sole grind that was a favourite of the Welwyn Warrior. The 'Faldo Supersonic Grind' as he affectionately named it. Very similar to the nipped off heel that Seve preferred on his sand wedge. This one's a 53-degree gap wedge.

At least it gets us off the subject of shoes.

Ah the good old days. When men were men, an clubs were clubs. I have some footage of him from 96 that I will put up when I am able to get it converted from 8mm. I'm surprised he didn't have me arrested for stalking back then. Of course, back then, he probably didn't even notice there was anyone on the course but him!

I think Faldo used a special version Del Mar 3.5 called Xperimental Tour Prototype (200 pcs only). Look at the picture below to see the similarity.

More or less. Basically, an effort to get rid of the taper of the grip, making it more constant width down the grip. There's a pic of one a few posts earlier.

Apparently Faldo was even more picky than Langer about his kit. I recall him complaining about lofts so the guy in the Mizuno van moved them by a quarter of a degree and he was happier. As for shoes I recall he had a deal with Stylo but as the shoes they made were dreadful he would swap them for FJs as soon as their rep was out of site. In his early days he used a lot of Toney Penna kit, woods and irons. I remember him being contracted to Wilson but using Mizzy irons, Wilson dumped him when he was photographed hitting into the last as St Andrews holding a TP9 iron while they were running ads of him praising Wilson...

Maybe slightly OT but still in the theme of Faldo's total perfection attitude toward his 'equipment'...... I remember hearing a story many years ago, about Faldo receiving some trousers (Like 40 pairs or something) from Pringles new range for the following year.

After trying a few different pairs on he decided he liked the new models, and the cut of the trouser but that they were all something crazy like 3mm too long  They were duly sent back, shortened 3mm,and returned.
