cmon man team golf is fun, biggest thing is you will know what it feels like to be part of a team, and the different type of pressure it brings.

Learning to salvage a terrible round when normally you wouldn't care as much because you are already out of contention is pretty darn important when playing for a team. Your team mates 69 doesn't mean sh*t if you go out and fire an 85. Learning to deal with that pressure, and knowing what its like to letdown your team (it eventually happens to everyone.) is pretty important.

It's the closest thing you are going to get in the meantime to playing for a college team, so why would you pass that up?

Man high school academics is a joke live a little.
I think he pretty much said it all right there haha :partytime2:
I think it depends on the seriousness of your hs coach and program.

I'm the head coach of a very successful high school program in Georgia. We do not play 9-hole matches. We travel to the most prestigous tournaments in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. Often, the fields we play in are as good as any SJGT or regional event. Most are 36-holes and are ranked by the junior golf scoreboard.

My guys get great competition, and at the same time have to learn how to balance academics, practice, and travel. We have workouts at 6:30 AM three times per week and very structured goal-setting programs. College coaches respect what I put my guys through.
thats exactly what i want at my high school

This is all you need to know...

Im 42 years old...ask me, or anyone whos high school days are long since gone...ask us if we were you would we play high school golf. The answer will be about 99.9% "hell yes". Man, while you are there dont pass up any opportunities to do anything and everything you can. I made a similar decision in high school by dropping baseball and sticking to football and track. Although im past it now, I regretted that decision for several years. If you do decide to not play on the golf team, make absolutely sure that its the right decision. Trust me, you dont want to be looking back in 20 years and saying "what if".

play hs golf. the only reason i would say not play is if you are a TOP TOP TOP junior golfer and you practice from right after school until dark everyday. if that's not you then you are not too good for hs golf. its not just the golf, but you learn how to play on a team and learn how to perform with other people counting on you.

First off, you need to learn to play and keep your grades up. College athletics and classes are way more demanding than HS. If you can't / don't learn now, you'll be screwed when you get on campus. At minimum, you'll typically cover a year of HS classwork in a semester at college.

Second, if you're not winning junior events, if I was a coach I'd ask why you didn't play HS golf... Coaches want winners, not people who are happy with being individuals in the middle of the pack. Why would I want you if you've proved over the last 4 years that you are neither a team player or a winner?

If those nine hole matches are really so worthless or easy on a shorter course, why not dominate them? Learn to win and to expect to do so every time. 9 holes is a tough test since one bad shot can ruin you. It'll teach you pressure. It'll also teach you to not throw in the towel ever. Even after a bad hole or two, your team needs your score and you'll learn to push through a tough spell. A 6300 yard course still forces you to have a great short game.

I played HS and enjoyed it. Keeping up with grades was not a problem for me but for some it could be.

I would tell you to start communicating with some coaches now and see what impresses them. We can all give you advice, but they can give you specifics. Call a good range of coaches from small and large schools. Most would probably be willing to talk with you.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Play high school golf. In case you have forgotten...colleges play team golf. if your grades are poor--it is your focus, study skills and time management....there is more than enough time for golf and academics in high school. I have coached several sports at the middle and high school level and have never seen grades be a problem due to sports---always due to player not taking care of business. The college coaches will be a the summmer events....for that matter, most HS coaches would not mind if you play a tournament during the season as long as you don't miss a HS match or tournament.

Yikes...didn't see the last post...good luck in HS and the AJGA.

I got really lucky on my hs golf team out of 12 on the team all of us went college on scholarships. 6 are playing professionally. 1 on the pga tour and the rest small tours around the country. One is still playing at utah and 3 others all have gone thru the pgm program and working at courses. We all see each other form time to time and play with each other when we can. I dont know why you would want to miss out on possibly forging lifelong friendships......oh ya my fiance played on the girls team at our school
