Junior's idea for a 'business'

Recommended Posts

How much would you pay?
Hello, I am a 15 year old who is looking into some way to earn some money. I was brainstorming and came up with an idea: How much would you pay or tip to clean your golf clubs before or after your round? I love to clean my clubs, and can do it pretty efficiently. I also have a frogger brushpro, so the groove of the wedges and irons would be cleaned as well. Basically what im asking, if you were at a course and a kid was offering to clean your clubs for some money, would you or would you not do it? (dont want to go into blind, because it might be a dud and a waste of time, so i thought i would ask some golfers, which would be my 'clients') Just thought id ask :)

Not much, not very original. I am also 15 and for some extra golf $$ I flip cameron putters. This year I have made about $2500, about $1000 from the covers and accesories released from the studio store and $1500 from the really amazing deals on tour putters I got on ebay and resold with COAs and better pics.

Do you honestly mean you made 2500? Because if you made that much you put at least that much in also. Most kids don't have 5k to invest in something as volatile as golf clubs. However a+ to you for a very original and successful idea!

I started out with about $500 in my credit card account. I bought the club cameron membership at the begining of the year for $100 sold the stuff in it for $85, every month there was a relase and I made about $75-$200 a release and come sept I have about $1200 in my account, I found a couple great deals on tour putters on ebay. I bought my first tour putter for $800 resold with better pics and a great description for $1600. I also got a great deal on a CT cover which I bought for $200 and resold for $600 so liquidity was never really a problem for me. to start all you need is a $300 for the kit and your first release.

You can make good money doing this, but need to clear it with the club, first. When I worked in the cart barn, I'd clean clubs all day in between taking care of carts and would make $75-200/day, depending on how busy it was, etc. There would be the $2 guys and the $5 guys, and the guy who'd give you $20 to do his clubs and his foursomes. It's something that a lot of guys appreciate not having to do themselves. A course that doesn't already offer this would probably have no problem with you setting up shop with a bucket and some towels. Just realize you'll probably kill that brush pretty quickly and you might want to get something cheap, or a more industrial type wire brush.

I'm sorry but that really doesn't sound all that wise to me. First of all how did you obtain the COAs? Second off all a 800 dollar putter isn't that liquid at all, what if someone never bought it? To me, cleaning clubs makes more sense, a lot less startup costs and your not depending on other people as much.

And i hate to say it and rain on your parade, but thats just one of the reasons myself and some of the guys i play with never use the "club cleaning guys" when we're in the States.

When we get 'hounded' after a round by a guy who looks like the brush he's using is more suited to removing debris from some old piece of farm machinery, and the towels he's got still have dirt encrusted into them from 2 weeks ago,the offer is normally declined.

Mind you,we normally ended up giving them some loose change to leave our sticks alone......laugh.gif

There is really no way that the OP is going to be able to make any money cleaning people's club at a course. First of all, the course would have to let you sit on their property and I'm sure they are going to want to take a cut, if they allow you in the first place. Second, I don't see golfers paying for the service. I've been to higher end courses that had employees cleaning the clubs for golfers coming off the course and even then, a lot of golfers refused the service.

I'm impressed with the OP's desire to make some extra cash and if I was him, I would just wait until you're able to work legally and get a job picking balls on the range. You'd get all the perks of working at a golf course (possible free golf, range balls, oh and a salary.) Heck, get a job flipping burgers or working fast food. I got a job the day I was legally able to and haven't looked back.

You'll never know until you try. But I'll tell you this: I would absolutely pay for your service. I enjoy helping young people with good attitudes achieve their goals.

I'm 53 yr old and have "worked" since I was eleven. When I was young, I was always looking for ways to make a few bucks. From selling kool aid at a roadside stand to delivering newspapers, I was all about it. My parents gave me a token allowance of 25 cents a week. Anything else I wanted was on me, so I was always trying different things. Trial and error creates character.

Years back even though my son watched me while playing golf he came up with some what the same idea. I asked to if he'd actually watched me during a round. He said "yes"; so I say pay more attention. I wipe down my irons before and after use so when I walk off 18 they look just like when I walked on to the 1st tee. Reason when walking off 18 I tell club cleaning guys don't bother with my clubs.

My situation aside, there are a lot of people that don't clean their clubs so you might find some willing customers. All depends on how much you charge.

Others have mentioned it, there's a small chance any course is going to let you run your "business" on their property when you're not actually an employee. Best bet is to actually get a job at a course and clean clubs on the side. I make $8.50 an hour doing proshop/ranger/cart kid work at my golf course, and on busy days I can bring home an extra $25 or so in tips. Factor in the free golf, and I think I'm doing fine.

And as for the Scotty Cameron sellers, thats a good way to make extra pocket change. But as I've found, unless you're sitting by the computer 24/7 waiting for releases (especially the limited ones where you make the real $$$), you're not going to make much of anything. I use to collect the stuff and sell what I didn't want to try and turn a profit, but I found it wasn't worth my time sitting by the computer all month waiting for random releases. Sure some releases are predictable (Hawaii, Majors, Vegas), but all the other ones are not.
