Considering reshafting my wedges

Recommended Posts

I currently have Nippon 950 stiff in all my irons except my wedges. My 50* and 56* Oil Cans have S300 and my CG10 lob wedge has a "Wedge" shaft in it from TT.

The weight difference is a pretty substancial difference, feel-wise, when transitioning between the 950s and the S300 shafted clubs. I can deal with it, but I'm thinking I might benefit from getting the S300s swapped out for something closer to the 950s. Maybe the 1050s, but I'm concerned they might hit the ball too high, because the 950s go real high with my i-506s.

Any thoughts? I like the trajectory of the wedges with the S300 but I think I could use more spin and might get a little more distance and touch out of a shaft that's betters suited to my game.

I'm really liking the 950's in my wedges, particularly the feel on less than full shots. That said, as you noted the 950's are high trajectory shafts. I've got a fairly shallow iron swing and I don't tend to take deep divots with my wedges, a player who really hits down and deep might have trouble varying the wedge shot trajectory with the 950's. Regarding the weight, I haven't checked the swing weight on my wedges but they feel similar to my prior 588 Gunmetals with stock wedge shaft with one notable difference - the 950 shafted wedges feel more head heavy (which I like) while the 588's felt shaft heavy (tougher for me to feel the clubhead). In general I believe you'd hit full swing wedge shots with the 950's quite a bit higher than with the S300's. If you're concerned that the 950's would play too high on full shots maybe the Nippon 1050 or 1150 would be a good wedge option for you, you'd keep that Nippon feel and be closer in trajectory to your S300's.

Yes, I have a very steep attack angle and taking big divots is a problem with the 950s in my current irons. I previously had PX in my irons and I think the 950s are much more active. So I'm adjusting to the kick at impact which is causing me to take bigger divots and sometimes catch turf before the ball.

TT Dynamic Gold Superlite (DG SL). I re-shafted my Nike Forged 53* and 58* wedges from the DG S400 they came with to the DG SL S300 soon after the DG SL were introduced about a year ago. The swingweight dropped about 1.5 sw, bringing them closer to my Nike PC irons at D-2. I had to add a few grams of lead tape to the 53* wedge but the 58* ended up at D-4.5. Trajectory seems about the same as the standard DG on a full shot; possibly a tad higher. The specs for the DG and DG SL are very similar by design but with about 20 grams less weight at the uncut length.

Did the same thing with my Raw SV's with the DG SL S300's and love them. The feel seems to be much better to me. I really like the lite weight of the shaft. I seem to feel the head a little better thoughout the swing.
