mackenzie golfbags?

I want to make this link available to anyone interested in the MacKenzie bag. I will have more to say about it when I get my heart out of my throat. When you click this link, I think you'll understand why.

I caddy and have carried them before. They are nice bags (well balanced, clubs go in and out fairly easily, light weight). The only bad thing is that the dye used to color the leather does wear off into your clothes. It seems to happen real bad when it rains. Now I've only carried the brown leather (which turned my entire shoulder red), so I can't speak of all the colors. It is a classy bag though.

I had a great chat with Todd Rohrer today and asked him about unstable dye in leather golf bags in general and MacKenzie bags specifically. He told me that this had not been a problem in the years that he has owned the company. He obviously cannot speak for anything that happened in the past but this is generally not a problem with high quality leather made products. Seems reasonable to me. I have seen a lot of cowboys ride in the rain and I have yet to see one with brown stains on his backside - at least any brown stains attributable to unstable dye in the seat of a leather saddle.

By the way, I'm sure that Todd wouldn't mind me saying this, at least I hope not. The link I put in another thread to an auction of a MacKenzie golf bag to benefit the Children's Cancer Association represents Todd's commitment to fighting that terrible disease, especially when cancer affects the innocent bodies of our littlest angels. Although the auction is over and you can't contribute directly by bidding or buying the bag he donated, I sure that any gifts made to the organization in the name of the Rohrer family would be a fitting tribute to the artistry of a fine man and his family.

Crimson0516, will you please post some pics of your McKennon bag? To date I have been unable to find or get a picture of an actual McKennon bag.

Also, I have been carrying a Mackenzie walker for numerous years now. I have NEVER had an issue with the stain of the leather coming off on my clothes or anything else. We have also sold numerous Mackenzie bags to customers and have never had anything but a great experience dealing with them. I have also never had a complaint from any of the customers we have sold them to.

I'm a "minimalist" at heart. I love the bag.

If I get too many pockets....I lose track of things.

I carry my bag backwards.....and I despise the Hybrid.

Having said that, if I try to compete this year.......the MacKenzie won't see much action and for sure the 3-iron will be left at home. There are TWO games out there guys.........

The game you love & the game you play.

I have two MacKenzie bags, one pre and one post Todd. I have experienced the "bag bleeding" in both - typically on very hot days. Wish it weren't so, because I love the bags, but don't use them because of this.

I have two sets of clubs, those I play on Saturday and one I play on Sunday. My golf heart and soul are my Sunday clubs and my Sunday bag. I am at peace when I am playing golf with them. The important things that I have learned about golf, and those things I have learned about myself because of golf, I learned with my Sunday clubs and carrying my Sunday bag. There are probably as many "games" of golf as there are golfers. Which one we play and which one we live makes all the difference.

Can someone please tell me about the "bleeding" issue associated with the Mackenzie golf bags? What is it? What causes it? Does it compromise the quality of the bag, or is just an aesthetic blemish?

Appreciate the feedback.
My black one has never done it, but some say the color comes out when the bag gets wet, whether from rain, sweat, etc.

Over-dying of leather can cause it, as can low quality dye or improper dying processes. I've personally never seen it happen.

Have you even had a high quality leather jacket bleed color? Have you ever seen a leather purse, a leather wallet, or a leather cap bleed color? Have you ever seen a cowboy with a brown bottom after a day in the saddle? Like most of you, there is no shortage of leather products in my life. I have never had a leather product of significant quality bleed any color. I have had any number of cotton products, a few synthetic products, and even a wool sweater lose color, but I have never had a leather anything bleed.

I have talked with Todd at MacKenzie as late as Friday. He is making me a leather strap to put on my fabric MacKenzie. I will carry in for a month after I get it. I'll take lots of pictures, before and after, and if there is bleeding, it will be there for all to see. Scouts honor, I will honestly report the results. Its not a scientific test but its the best thing I can come up with to put this to rest.

I have had it happen to me - I've ended up with black on my back, shoulder, and the top of the back of my shorts. Maybe I got the short straw, but as I said it has happened on both of my bags. Don't have a picture to show you, but take my word for it. Why? Don't know. I didn't go back to Todd with the issue, although having spoken to him numerous times about other things I have no doubt he would work with me to correct the issue if I pusued it. He is a good guy. You're as informed as you are probably going to get on the matter - if you want a bag like this I would buy it. They will stand behind it if you are not satisfied.

I have a few Mackenzie bags that I use personally and I have NEVER had any issue with the colors bleeding from the bag onto my clothes. Almost all of my bags have Navy in them so I have the died colored leather. All of mine came from Todd. I also played alot in the rain with them when I lived in Oregon. I would bet that anyone that has had this issue has an older pre-Todd bag from when they used cheaper materials. We have also sold countless numbers of these bags to our customers and I have never had one complaint about the leather bleeding. Confidentially I will tell you to buy a bag and do not worry about this issue as you wont have it with Todd's Mackenzie bags.

(still waiting for that picture of the McKennon bag BTW)

The Mackenzie Bag Company has been sold quite a few times.

I have an older, pre-Todd Rohrer (as far as I know) model. All black, Peter Jacobsen model, has his signature on the plaque.

It has never bled. Ever. I walked in from the far end of a golf course in Phoenix during a monster rainstorm 3 days after I got it. No bleeding. Ever.

It's a shame others have had the problem. :(

I have a Green MacKenzie Walker from 2001. It is made of High Quality Cardura. Not a "thin canvas"...but a very heavy, durable cardura.

I have not had a single problem. This bag has been thru rain---mud----and likely a little SNOW.

Fantastic product. I have not hesitated to buy another....neither should anyone else.

Pictures please !!! Show us some proof that your MacKenzie's bleed. I don't believe it.

Great feedback.

Another question. How long have you guys owned your Mackenzie bags?
7 years.
How long does the bag last before, say, you need a new strap? Im thinking along the lines of rounds played per year.
Still on original strap. It has probably 500 rounds on it. I don't use it every time I play.
And, did the company send you a new one as part of the warranty, or did you have to purchase?
I've never used the warranty. IIRC the ownership of Mackenzie was different in 2002 when I bought this one through a club I kinda/sorta belonged to. Pretty sure any issues would be covered but I've never tried it, as aside from small scuffs here & there from normal use, it functions and looks fine.

I have had a couple people ask on the blog for my McKennon Player's Bag pics...I tried posting them a few weeks ago but guess I didn't do it correctly...a bunch more of them on the site now and a cool deal where you can access a web cam in the room where they make the bags and watch your bag being made. Also saw a new pattern that Mackenzie made in like a diamond pattern that was pretty sweet.

They are similar. No doubt. But I have them both and I like McKennon better because of the size, the price and it showed up in a flannel bag bag with my name on it and a hand written note from Mr. McKennon...I told my boy in Atlanta about it and he bought one.....then arranged the camera in the McKennon Studio so he saw his actual bag being cut and talked to Mr. McKennon while he was doing it....when I bought my bag they didn't have that...very cool. He told my buddy that the bag was the leather version of the original Jones Bags from the 1970's and he owns all the original designs from Jones or owns Jones or something......

That being said, buy whatever one of rhem...they are both sweet.
