Club ??'s... 9th Grade Girl beginner to team

Daughter is 5'5" and in the 9th grade.

We currently have two sets of ladies clubs in the house. The first set is a cheap "Acuity Golf" from Dicks Sporting Goods. Not high end, but do have graphite shafts, and 4-pw, 1,3,5 woods. The second set (my wifes) is a set of Big Bertha 2004 with ladies gems shafts, 5-10,W, along with a Big Bertha Warbird 12*driver and 3 wood, and Ping B60i putter.

My daughter is joining the high school golf team (not a strong team). I am really enthused about this as I hope she really picks up the game so she can enjoy it for a lifetime. I want to encourage her and I see myself as being able to provide support with things such as equipment. Do you think I should get her a new set of clubs? Let her play with my wife's and replace my wife's?

If I get her another set, what about a used set of Ping's, Callaway, etc? What should I look for? Shafts, lenghts, iron set make up, hybrids, fairways, etc.? Suggestions welcome.

How much golf does she play now? Are you sure she will continue playing?

I ALWAYS recommend kids get a good set of used clubs rather than a new set of lower end clubs. Something like used Pings are going to retain their value so it will be an easier transition as she grows, improves.

If she is pretty much a rookie, get the easiest up in the air set you can. Lofted fairway metals and hybrids rather than long irons. Lots of loft on the driver. The easier you make it for her while beginning, the greater the chance of her continuing.

She should probably get a putter, a wedge or two, 7-PW, 6-3 Hybrids, 5 Wood 3 Wood and a driver.

all ladies flex shafts, and graphite shafts are probably a better option.[/quote]

Range-Rat,

EXCELLENT ideas. I agree 100%. www.callwaygolfpreowned.com is a great option.

Agree Callaway Golf preowned would be a great way to go. Ebay also has lots of good deals. She may not need the 3 wood yet, as the 5 wood will be much easier for her to hit. The very forgiving, game improvement type irons would be best for her. Callaway and Ping both make some great ones, and the prices for used sets are MUCH more reasonable. Get ladies clubs. Mens and Seniors will be too stiff and too long for her.

My first full sized clubs were 12 degree Driver, 3 wood, 5,7,9 PW and putter. All 2nd hand which my dad bought from his friends wife. I used these till I got a handicap and I knew I was going to carry on playing and at that point got new clubs fitted for me. If you are going to buy her new clubs help her choose but let her have the final say because the clubs have to look and feel right as well as producing the results.

I was in similar senario as you are with your daughter (same height, HS freshman & new to golf). My daughter joined her HS girls golf team last season (Aug - Dec 2009). We started her out with the Mizuno Ladies Sora set, she has been consistently taking lessons with a local reputable golf teaching pro (very important) and playing regularly. She has now out grown the Mizuno Sora set and is now playing the following:

1) Driver: Callaway FT-iQ (light flex) 11* at 44.5" (custom ordered through Callaway)
2) 3FW & 7FW: Cobra S9-1 M Speed Senior's flex (stock specs)
3) Hybrids 4 & 5: Cobra Baffler Senior's TWS (stock specs)
4) Irons: Scratch EZ-1 (5-PW) Nippon NS PRO850 (R-flex)
5) Wedges: Scratch LDG sand and lob wedges (stock specs)
6) Putter: Itsy Bitsy Spider 33"

The above clubs are the results from taking her to a couple of local club fitters in our area and engage with her swing coach to review her swings/game. Most important of all, she choose the above clubs manufactures on her own (base on choices that the fitters provided). She shoots in the low 90's now (was always over 100 last year). Keep on supporting her, the results are very rewarding. She actually sits through golf tournaments on TV with me (i.e. ProAM) and we have great time watching the game together.
