I use this tool:

http://www.golfspikes.com/cleatkaddy.html

but first I soak the bottom of my shoes in a little bit of water to loose any dirt, grass etc. Making sure to also clear the holes that the prongs go into.

Exactly, the soaking of the sole prior to spike removal is the key. I have never found a cleat I could not remove by soaking the shoes for an hour, making sure there are no dirt or small pebbles in the holes for the prong, and then pressing the spike removal tool down towards the sole hard while turning it.

Depending on the type of plastic the spike is made of, it will often rip during the removal process, but by the time I am removing them, there is no intentions of reuse.

I've had my spikes for about six years and only changed the spikes for the first time at Christmas. I couldn't get any of them to budge at first and had leave them soaking in a couple of inches of water for a good half hour or so, but after that they started moving. Make sure you push down with the tool and turn hard.

I have this tool too. I like it because I can mount the bits into my cordless drill. The spikes see that torque laden getup coming at them, they jump out before I even get near them!

Use the one on the left (in the pic) in a drill at low speed. Have not had to soak any shoes...as the drill gets them out if you press down hard enough. When replacing spikes that have metal threads....drop a drop of 3in1 oil in the cavity and that helps with them coming out easy in the future and rust.

Any and all of the above should work fine. If not, as a last resort...I read on this sight and others, to heat up a large flat head screwdriver, and stick it into the spike allowing the plastic to melt around the bit...let it cool off and twist counter clockwise (lefty loosy, lucy). Don't try this if you are accident prone or have zero Macgyver in your blood. Never tried it myself, but sounds like it should work.

I can vouch this work but i only used it because the cleat snapped off... thread here

The flat cheap wrenches/ball mark tools that come with the spikes are only good for tearing up your hands and spikes (and in the hands of most golfers, the greens when they use them to "repair" ball marks.) I have the ratchet one and it's overkill (no need for a ratchet - most spikes only require a quarter turn these days) and still tears up the spikes sometimes. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably get one like this:

But with as flimsy as the wrench holes are (made out of the soft rubber spike compound instead of the harder thread/lok material - and I use Champ spikes, which advertise as "Wrench holes formed in rigid material), I think there will always be a problem with ripping the wrench holes. And that's a real problem for me because when I travel, I take my nice golf shoes and match both my on and off-course clothes to them and just swap out the spikes for street-caps. (Saves packing extra shoes for short trip with limited luggage space.)

+1 Never had to soak either and agree with the one on the left. The stubborn ones got my super big vise grip with a little vengance before this tool & it worked real good.

The Champ Max Pro with the multiple heads works great.

Quick threadjack: Champ Stingers are my spikes of choice. I really wish they would come out with some colors other than yellow. Those yellow spikes just ruin the look of shoes. They do sell silver ones labeled "For Nike", but you are SOL if your shoes use a different adapter. Makes no sense to me considering that Champ makes the Stingers in other colors for OEMs (e.g., clear brown to match some ECCO shoes.)

They actually have a couple of different colors that I have seen, there are some on ebay right now actually. They have a blue/pink, red/white, blue/white, and of course black/yellow. None of these are the clear brown that you were looking for but gives you a couple options.

I was thinking more along the lines of all black, so they would go with anything.

But speaking of the clear brown ones, I find it odd that ECCO would have them made to match their shoes . . .

. . . but then not make the matching spikes available aftermarket, either from ECCO directly or through Champ.
