New project finished. Refinished to raw by hand. This is my second hand-refinish and my last. Scratch was much harder to refinish than the Titleist!

Now:

Now:

A week ago:

Random details:
-Slight increase to size of grind
-Squared off the toe a bit more than before (does not look like it in the pic though)
-Regrooved with Golfsmith tool (two scratches between the lower grooves which should disappear w/use, need practice with sharp objects)
-Darkness on face from Gun Blue, very helpful to help find remaining chrome/nickel
-Lost about 2 sw points by removing chrome and nickel (sw was D1 before sanding)
-Reshafted with Spinner 5.5
-Refinish + lighter shaft = 10g weight to get to D3

Thanks for checking out my stuff.
What did you use to take the chrome finish off?

Craftsman 3D sander, many 3M pads of different grit, gloves and a mask. Way too much effort on this one! I'll send the matching 60 some where else to have the plating removed. I'm figuring on playing them when i wear out my Callaways.

Thanks for checking it out.

EDIT- I also used a stone to ensure face flatness.

Update 06.23.2011

Bagging Wishon Forged 560 MCs with SK Fiber Tour Trac 80 shafts and oversized Winn grips. Have yet to swap out the steel shafted wedges, that's next.

I've been playing with an injured right wrist for years and it became nearly impossible to hit down on the ball last year. Frustration would not begin to describe it. I had even put the clubs away for the first time. After some discussions with Gary Cottrell, club maker extraordinaire, I went through a full fitting and testing resulting in the irons pictured. Gary uses TrackMan and a great fitting system with dozens of shaft/head combinations. His primary goal was to reduce damage at impact with a secondary goal of getting my ball flight higher, as I'm not really hitting down. After much testing, five or six test irons and a 36 holes filled with many 5 iron shots, Gary built me an incredible set. I've built clubs before, but am so impressed with what frequency matching, detailed fitting, genuine knowledge and real skill have provided!

The heads are incredibly forgiving with soft feel and minimal offset, and the shafts and grips really take the shock out of the hits. Instead of 3 good holes and 15 awful holes filled with low shots and tops, I now have made it 18 four times without wanting to quit. The forgiveness off the toe of these heads is UNBELIEVABLE!

I will miss my Bridgestones less every time I play these.

Update 05.23.2013, a long time later...

Trying out the Anser wedge and the i20 hybrid. I'm sure both are wonderful...
Orlimars are back in play because nothing works anymore. I have instituted a perimeter weighting feature on both the 4 and 7.

Iron Man is an early Father's Day gift from the wife.

Decided to make the ugly blades beautiful (or more ugly, depending on your POV). Found a chrome shop nearby and had them stripped. The chatter and dings are still there but overall they turned out great compared to the 1/2 chrome faces, etc.

Reshafted with original shafts even though they are rusty and old in hopes to return them to identical form. Did take the time to spine the shafts though. Used a bit more tip weight than they already had in them to return the SW to spec (standard 4g weight loss each). Paint fill I'm still waffling on, so it's either done, not done or will be removed.

Pretty excited to get these out!

Finished the finish I think.. for now.

Ended up thinking the brown was too brown and had a bit too much texture, so after some experimenting with "The Works" and a metal brush, I found a darker finish wasn't difficult to get to.
Kind of hard to see here, maybe the sole of the 7 is a decent example. Has a silver iridescence, smooth finish, darker than this looks to be and a bit shiny.

Rust will come and it'll all not matter.

Thanks for looking!

Mizzys look badass with the brown. They look like you would get the ball to spin back... With a 4 iron.

Update 8/16

In the Sun Mountain Four 5:

Titleist 910 D2, 10.5, stock Kai'li 65 regular. Set to B-2 currently. This tested nicely on the indoor simulator, but I've yet to like it on the course. A minor amount of custom paint fill.

Ping i20 Hybrids, PX 5.5 20 and 23 degrees. Just got the 20 because the 23 works so well. More minor paint modification. They live under the Iron Man and Pokeball covers.

Wishon 560MC, 5-A, SK Fiber Tour Track 80 graphite. A wedge bent to 53. Custom set build by Gary Cottrell at Golfer's Advantage in Howell, MI. Back to these because of wrist issues. I want to like them but have been having a really hard time this year when they are in the bag.
Vokey Spin Milled 09 Oil Can 58, stock TT shaft. Paint fill not obvious, but it's all black except for the "Vokey Design".

Ping Anser 2 BeCu, 33 inches. The safest club in the bag.

Other possible configs:

Nike Pro Combo Tour, 5-PW, TTDG S300. I have but don't play the 3 and 4. Full disclosure: this is my third set of Pro Combos, first Tour version. Considering sticking graphite in these because no matter what I do to beef up the wrist, it doesn't remain solid long.
Nike Forged 53, stock Nike/TT shaft that launches really high. An oldie but favorite wedge.

Mizuno MP-14, 4-PW, TTDG S300U. Do not use the 3, but the 4 is like a current 5, so it works in with my hybrid config. Had the chrome removed by The Chrome Doctor here in Nashville and they're rusting nicely (took brown finish off, turning brown on their own). Shafts are originals and also rusting in spots :( These will need to be sold now that I have the PCs. I don't plan on using them again.

Titleist 980 15, Stock Speeder Stiff
Wishon S2R Putter

I like the look of several of these bags. The stripped Mizunos are excellent looking. When my MP-32s start looking beat up I'm going to send 'em off to the Iron Factory to be satinized but now you've given me something new to consider.

Thanks for checking this thread out, commenting and for the comment on the Mizunos. Raw 32s would be something special for sure!

In the Four 5 on 4/9:

Putter: (Invisible)Anser BeCu, 33 inches, Pingman grip. Put a SuperStroke on the Giannini and it's excellent, but I was playing at a local club with insane greens and found the Anser much easier to use. Familiarity I guess.

Wegdges: Miura wedges, the older ones, 60 and 54, Aerotech Steelfiber i-95 regular shafts. 54 bent to 55. These were put together by Gary at Golfer's Advantage in Fenton, MI.

Irons: Adams CB1 6-G / CB2 5, JAVLNFX i95 regular shafts. All irons 1/4 inch short of standard (1/4 inch longer than old standard) and bent to old school lofts, starting with GW at 50.

Hybrid: (Iron Man) Adams Idea Pro 23, stock Aldila, regular.

Woods: (Rocket Tour) TM R9 9.5, stock stiff, set N, a little extra weight in the ports; (Perry the Platypus) Ping Anser 16.5, TFC 800 stiff, set blank (flat).

The Adams irons were more of an experiment with heavier graphite shafts. I like the results so far.

Have to take at least a few weeks off because my wrist is in pretty bad shape, so I'm selling some stuff off and doing an overhaul on the bag. I don't know about selling the irons off, but I'm at the why not stage. It's been a rollercoaster bag year with many changes, but those irons have been in all season. It's probably their fault I still can't score :)

So, changes in the next week or so if I get lucky and sell.
Thanks for looking

Go back to the Mizunos, if you still have 'em. I'm still a fan of that finish. That, the BeCu Anser, snag yourself a new driver and off you go.

Oddly, I miss those (Mizuno's) the most out of everything in my thread here. They were so pretty!
Sold them to a friend in Michigan who thanks me often, just to rub it in.

I have a set of Adams CMB heads here just waiting for shafts.. I could send them over to the Chrome Doctor.. would they be as slick as the MP-14s?

Now that new driver point- I'm trying to get there! No bites yet on my sale thread, not even a trade offer. I have another week of not playing to rehab the wrist, so hopefully something happens.

Thanks for the reply Xir, take care.

I like bright and shiny:

Had the CB1s pulled finally, and those shafts shoved into these CMB heads. Tomorrow I'll test these out! So in the bag will be the R9 (not SuperTri, original) 8.5, RBZ II 3 and 5 woods, ancient Adams 4H, CMB 5-GW, Miura 54/60 and my Giannini, which I'm really trying to get used to.

The number of headcovers in my bag is showing my age.. and weight...
