Ryan Moore's NEW Handmade Scratch Jeff McCoy putter 4/16/2010

Recommended Posts

Putter IS in play this week at Quail Hollow.........
Ryan came straight from Augusta up to Chattanooga and was up in theshop at the beginning of the week to work with Master Craftsman Jeff McCoy on a new Scratch putter. He has been working on some different things with his putting and now needs something a little different than he did earlier in the year. Pictured below is what Ryan and Jeff came up with. It is a heel shafted blade with a wider flange than normal and minimal offset. It is also a little heavier coming in at 370g. The head is made from 1018 carbon steel and is Raw so it will rust up just how Ryan likes it. This putter was 100% made by hand there was no CNC work done to it at all. Jeff and Ryan named it the Mc1 and should be in his bag when he returns to the PGA Tour in a couple weeks. The pics do not even do it justice. It is just stunning. Really makes me wish I could putt with a heel shafted blade...... lol

Talk about a big change in putter styles for Ryan. WOW!
New one looks good, Ari. That headshape is easy to make, not easy to make look good, eh? I like what Jeff put together and hope that Ryan has some great success with it.
The hosel to head transition is what seems to be the key point in this style, if you ask me.
Keep up the pictures and I wish Ryan success in the upcoming tournaments.

Mac- I'd say that the face is indeed milled, just not using a CNC machine. Handmade is still a very good term for this putter, IMHO. Jeff is incredibly talented and the more putters he puts his mind to, the better the results will be. I look forward to his work being shown.

Two questions:

1. Will he even let the face rust up?

2. How does JM get the face flat without milling it?
1. The whole putter will get a light coat of rust on it.

2. The face is milled with a manual Bridgeport mill.

Thanks LaMont! Like I said it is even better looking in person. The shape is just beautiful especially the shaping of the back flange and how the hosel flows into the curves of the head. I agree with you the hosel to head transition is the key point to this style putter and making it look good. That and shaping the back flange just right. Ill keep you guys updated on how Ryan is putting with it. I know he went out today and used it for the first time and shot 6 under for the 9 holes he played......

I absolutely love that except for the alignment lines..... So is it kind of in between an 8802 and a del mar in terms of flange size? Can you give the face to back of flange dimension?
Yes that is correct. It is between an 8802 and a Del Mar in terms of flange size. Jeff has the exact measurements I will post them tomorrow after I talk to him.

Ari,
This is a beautiful putter!!! If it was me and I've been known to do some stupid things, I would dunk it in some Coke overnight and give it that nice deep brown/red color. Congrats on finding an absolutely top notch pro in Moore and an even equally excellent club crafter.

Like it.

I wasn't such a fan of Moore's last Scratch putter. Nothing wrong with it, just not my cup of "tee." :D

But - this latest one is NICE! :good:

So he putts with a center shafted putter at the Masters because it felt right and looked right and he goes from that to a heel shafted blade? Wow, dramatic change. Great looking stick, but can't really understand the whole logic behind going waaaaay different than what he was saying works for him.
you beat me to it-- i was about to post the exact same thing.

the putter is absolutely gorgeous, but im shocked and baffled as to why he decided to go to a heel shafted blade after putter SO well with a center shafted mallet!

i was really expecting after the masters that he would come away with something like a white hot #5 or scotty red X, some mid-mallet near center shaft putter. if i recall, his first scratch putter was an anser-ish putter that was shafted toward the heel and had a pretty big toe hang. after putting so well on some of the most challenging greens on tour with a center shaft, its pretty surprising to see him shake it up again.

Very cool Ari!

I don't blame Ryan for switching putters, it can be very easy to do when you just can't get the ball to drop in the hole. Hopefully the success he had at the Masters gave him a few "lessons learned" that he was able to incorporate into this putter Jeff made. I'm looking forward to seeing him play this weekend, he's become a favorite within my circle of friends:clapping:

We are still working on names for the putters. I appreciate everyone's ideas for this. Do you guys like putter names with letters and numbers like Mc1, BB1 etc or do you like putter names that are actually names like Anser, Newport etc?

I was surprised that Ryan went with a heel shafted blade also after the center shafted mallet he was using. He said that he really liked the center shaft at setup but did not really like the way it worked during his stroke. His main idea was to try to get his hands in a more neutral position at address which apparently the heel shafted blade with very little offset does also. He said he has never putted well with a face balanced putter always preferring something with some toe hang. The other interesting thing is that he did not feel like he putted well at The Masters. When I told him he lead the field in overall putting he was shocked. He said that sometimes statistics do not tell the whole story and felt like this was one of those times. He said that stat can be very misleading because he holed out 3 times from off the green and hit alot of iron shots that week that ended up on the fringe just inches from the actual green surface. So any 2 putt from there that was a 2 putt in his mind only showed up as a 1 putt in the stats. He told me that on Friday on 16 he putted from the fringe across the green towards the pin and the ball rolled past the pin about 10 feet and stopped just in the fringe. He then missed the 10 footer from there for par. So a 3 putt in this case in his mind only shows up as 1 putt in the stats. Just thought that was really interesting, getting the thoughts of a Tour player in a situation like that. Hopefully this putter does everything that he wants. If the putts start to fall for him you will see Ryan holding a trophy sooner than later imo.

According to Jeff Ryan's putter is 3.890" from heel to toe and 1.420" from front to back.

Numbers and letters are forgettable imo. Bullseye, One, Answer, Cash-In, etc are legendary. And yes I know about the 8802, but it just seems like names last longer than numbers and letters.

Here's an unsolicited suggestion for an alternative name...
How 'bout "The Real Mccoy"??
I agree names are far better than numbers. The putter is the most used club in the bag it deserves to have a name and a personality that goes along with it.

And I actually think "The Real Mccoy" isn't such a bad staring point; especially for a putter that is a twist on a classic...
