Preparation for the first tournament of the year

Hello folks,

 

This year I'm taking golf much more seriously. Last year, I'd show up for a tournament, putt and hit some balls for about 30 mins. This year I plan to show up about an hour and a half before the tee time, and putt, chip, hit balls, you get the idea. Any suggestions on what to do from now to Sunday (tourny).

 

This is my first stroke play tournament I feel confident about. I tend to do well in scramble/best ball tournaments, with 2 wins last year in the aforementioned formats.

 

Looking for any tips.

Practice like you play, hitting 50 7 irons isnt going to help you as much as hitting lets say a driver than a 7 iron and maybe a wedge shot. Also practice alot of 10-12 footers those putts make a good golfer a great golfer.

Just play as many rounds as possible and practice your short game as much as possible. End of story.

work on your drives, irons, putting and chipping. I hate going into tourneys without hitting drives first. makes you less confident...me anyway

Probably the last/least thing you should be practicing considering you will be hitting that less than any other club. But everyone is different...........(but the pros and top level college players practice short game first and the most). IMHO.

I usually start out with putting and chipping, just to get a feel for the speed and firmness of the greens. Then I usually hit the range. I would suggest not hitting too much. I would maybe hit 25-30 balls to get warmed up. Then, I usually play the first 3 holes (all birdies of course), to start visualizing what's going to happen. Whatever you do, don't feel like you are rushing to get warmed up. Usually about 20 minutes before tee, I go putt more and figure out pace for the rest of the day. Then I go sit down, eat something, and relax.

Practice your short game (on course if possible) until ur hands hurt, like my coach says ( teaches multiple tour players and played in 5 U.S. Opens) "You gotta be able to hit the ball like crap and still score", Corey Paving shot 68 hitting 4 GIR last year one day, its impossible to hit every drive and iron perfect, short game short game short game...

like everyone else said, short game is key. make sure you can hit fairways. it doesn't matter if you hit driver or hybrid/3-iron on every hole. if you can put it in play and score around the greens, you'll be okay. work on those 12-15 footers.

Before I tell you guys how I did.. I will give you a little background on my course. Its a short 9 hole course, with lots of hills and tricky greens, consisting mainly of 10-15 handicappers.

 

That being said.. I went out and shot a +5 and won it by 1 stroke over an older friend of mine. This was an all ages tournament, juniors, seniors and everybody in between. I didn't just win the Jr division, I also won the whole thing.

 

I got a nice hat, and a pat on the back, oh well.. thats good enough for me
