I developed the shanks.
Ok, any advice/support welcome here. I currently am a 9 hdcp. Lately, the strong part of my game has been around the greens and from 110 in with my wedges.

Yesterday, had a good front side. No birdies, but made some great par saves (been missing quite a few greens lately but like I said wedge play and even putting are making up for it right now) and made the turn at 39. But...I did shank a wedge shot on the front from about 100 (still got up and down for par).

Back nine. Tee game and around the green pretty good but I started shanking irons and wedges. Something got into my head, Bad. Ended up with a 50 on the back. I was more dumbfounded than pissed.

The only swing tweak I've made lately is to make a slower, controlled backswing with driver and I've moved that to irons also. It's been working out quite well until yesterday. I think I started trying to accelerate too quick on the downswing and getting my hips cleared way too soon. But now it's in my head and I'm worried about not getting rid of the shanks.

Anybody ever go through anything similar and have any advice?

Well to start I can not believe that you used the dreaded S word :vava:

I had a similar issue about 5 years ago right after I purchased a new set of irons. after the first round with them I was like what the heck is going on. I demoed them and was fitted and hit them so good it was not even funny. went to the range and figured I would beat this thing, turns out that I was swinging way to hard too early in the swing and was letting my rear hip slide a little. so I put my feet together and hit my wedge for about 10 shots and wala, then proceeded to hit the 7, 5 and the 3 the same way. when I took my normal set up, kept the same rhythm and my shank ( can I say that word lol! ) was gone..... just for kicks I hit two shots where I just unloaded early and there it reared it's ugly head. now anytime I am not hitting the ball solid I go back to the feet together drill. hope this may help a little and remember everybody hits a bad shot once in a while...... even the pros. have a great day ;)

Funny thing about that word. I started doing some searching and realized how taboo it was to actually mention that word. Mostly it was referred to as the Sh_ _ nks or something.

;) - That's about how I felt yesterday afternoon afterwards!!

Thanks for the advice. I've found a few helpful posts here and elsewhere and the feet together drill is pretty much a staple. I did go to the range with a small bucket after my round and did hit a couple of wedge shots with my feet together. I don't think I gave it enough swings. I probably shouldn't have gone to the range at all given my mental state. I can see the headline..... Area Man Goes on Three State Killing Spree After Developing the Sh@*nks.

:vava:

Thanks again. Now, should I see a teaching pro or a shrink?

A shrink! The pro may help with the mechanics but most of the issue is the fear of the recurring S@#$k. I had a bout not too long ago, it also happened right after a switch in equipment. I narrowed down the issue to stiffer shafts that had less droop. I had to re-learn where the clubhead was with the new sticks. I used a drill/station similar to Vijay whereby I placed a water bottle just outside my ball as feedback. I began by making slow, deliberate swings focusing on not striking the water bottle. Gradually, I increased my swing speed until I was up to normal/max effort. I still bring the bottle out every now and again when my ball striking gets a little off. This drill is similar to the gate drill and has really helped me locate the center of the clubhead in a full speed full swing. HTH

Glad to see you are getting some advice and support from some of the members, most people do not like to admit they had a case of the shanks ;) did I just type that ? imo confidence is what is needed to play consistently. the other day I played at a local course I know well and a guy who never played there beat me by a few shots. used to be I would get flustered and practice like crazy but for whatever reason that day I just did not have my usual game. was short on most of my shots and did not get up and down well at all. everybody has a bad round or two and gets in a little funk. just need to be patient and get your timing back. hey we have to have bad days to offset the great days we have or else we would not appreciate them right ?

had that problem, tried feet together, didn't work...

so next i tried the left arm only drill (for rh golfers)...mainly bc it's a difficult drill to hit solid shots with, especially if your hips are flying...those dirty shots were gone after one session...
