College golf schools?

Okay so I just graduated from highschool and decided golf is something I want to persue. I got into golf my junior year so it was a little too late to get recruited. I have heard there are golf schools you can go to after high school where you train for golf but can also get college credits. I would like to go there for a year and then try and transfer to a big school to play golf. Anyone know if there are schools like this and could you recommend any?

I think you're talking about PGM programs at a few universities. It's more about learning about golf than "training" for golf. I'm just curious but what do you normally shoot now?

No I have heard there are like golf academy's where you work on your golf game for a year in hopes of playing college golf. Kind of like homeschooling but playing golf all the time at a golf academy. I average in the upper 70s and would like to play at a school in the south.

If I were you, I'd look at schools for their academics and then their golf team as you really aren't going to school to play golf, or at least you shouldn't be. Either way, good luck in your search.

Well the school I was going to go to for academics is a top 10 d1 school for golf so I would not be able to play there. Golf right now is my passion so Id like to keep playing. My uncle played college golf and played on the pro tour for 10 years. He walked on to a d1 golf team and was their number one player by senior year. He also said I was better as a highschool senior than he was. So I'd like to try and persue my dreams of playing professional golf, and if I don't get good enough to play at an elite level in college I will stop playing and focus solely on my degree.

Golf Prep/Academies are extremely expensive. $35-50,000.

I suggest Jr College for 2 years then give it a shot.

well...IJGA has a Post grad
IMG has a post grad...
you will get top notch coaching from Hank Haney and David Leadbetter respectively, but its gonna cost you some penny

Handicap is a 4 and yes I do play all the from the tips. My short game is actually above average, it's my long game that gives me more problems. My putting is actually better than a lot of my friends that play in ajga events, they just hit the ball longer and more consistently straight than I do

Sounds like you have desire and some talent. Here is what I would advise, Check out NAIA or NCAA Division 3 schools in the sun belt. You will have an opportunity at these schools to try to walk on. and qualify, and just as importantly you will be able to get a good 4 year college Degree if the golf thing does not work out. If you turn out to be a real talent, all the better, the large Universities generally keep an eye out for recruitable talent.

Work with a club pro this summer. Find a JUCO. Work hard and see what happens.

thats good, i know in college there is alot of emphasis on shortgame. with that handicap you could play at a D2 school, but if you know you can get better and there is room to improve then you should be in good shape to play

Well I know I can improve because I've only been playing for two years. I was a four sport athlete in highschool so I learn very quickly. I'm going to try to play in a few tournaments this summer and try to play at a d2 school nearby.

DON'T RUSH IT! Take a year and figure out what the hell you want to do. Either go to a JUCO for a year (which is cheap, and will definitely allow you to transfer to a state school if golf doesn't work out), or look into a golf academy like Core/IJGA (in excess of 40K). If your family has money, a golf academy is probably the best thing for your development/future in the game.
