People have to understand that what Cameron is doing is a lot closer to art than golf club supplies. His Damascus putter is just as significant to our time as a Picasso is to that time. The problem people are having is understanding the worth of the putter is not just the sum of its parts, no more than a painting should be worth just the cost of materials and canvas.

Cameron has gone beyond his brilliance in innovation and originality with the Damascus and possibly created the first representation of sports art. I have been dying to get one of these and have a very good line on one right now. Hopefully if things go well I will have it in a few months.
Good for you.. I really do hope you are able to get one. Everyone has the right to chase something that holds value for them.
For me, I do not see the value, but again, that is me.. Different strokes for different folks, correct?
I do have issue with your comparison of Scotty to Picasso. I do not believe that Scotty is on a level with aPicasso
Picasso completely reinterpreted an existing artform, and made art completely unlike anything seen prior. As an abstractionist, form itself was less important to Picasso..
If you want to take that view of it, than the true putter artists were mainly Karsten Solheim and Truett Mills..
While Scotty is a good marketer, he is not nearly the innovator that Karsten and T.P. were.
Agreed with regards to Mr. Solheim and Mr. Mills. Also agreed that Cameron is not comparable to Picasso. I would compare Cameron to PT Barnum (an not being disrespectful here). PT Barnum had a good product and marketed it as the "Greatest Show on Earth!" Because of master marketing, PT Barnum elevated his circus into an event by creating this mystique surrounding it. It was talked about by the masses as THE event to see, thus people flocked to see it. PT Barnum created hype for his product that people swarmed to see it. IMO, what Cameron has done with his putter line. I believe there are many people that make as good of a product, if not better, but they do not get the hype Cameron does. Cameron is definitely the finest self promoting marketing genius that has graced the golf industry. At least one of the finest.
I think the PT Barnum comparison is valid.. He sure was successful, and made lots of money in his day.
There is some quote by PT Barnum that is right on the tip of my tongue.. I just cant remember it..;)
didnt it have something to do with money being parted from someone?

Cameron is being compared to Picasso?!?!?cheesy.gif

Cameron is more of a Thomas Kinkade.

Here's the Wiki article on Kinkade...

Thomas Kinkade is an American painter of realistic, bucolic, and idyllic subjects. He is notable for the mass marketing of his work as printed reproductions and other licensed products via The Thomas Kinkade Company. He characterizes himself as "Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light" (a trademarked phrase), and as "America's most-collected living artist".[1] Media Arts, the publicly-traded company that licenses and sells Kinkade's products, claims that 1 in 20 homes in the U.S. feature some form of Thomas Kinkade's art. He has received criticism for the extent to which he has commercialized his art—for example, selling his prints on the QVC home shopping network. Others have written that his paintings are merely kitsch, without substance,[2] and described it as chocolate box art.[3]

Scotty Cameron is the Thomas Kinkade of the putter world without a doubt.

This thread is entertaining too. He's picasso,....no, he'e PT Barnum....no, he's Thomas Kinkade. Seriously?

This putter is interesting. Interesting look but also interesting that some people value it that much. For me, putters are for putting....not art.
Ok, if you were to purchase a Damascus 009 would you putt with it? Let's say money is not an issue and the putter would never be stolen. Would you still putt with it?

From a former Cameron collector, Cameron is more about tweaking an existing putter then marketing the heck out of it as an original design. If we are honest here Cameron gets a lot of credit for creating a Damascus putter and the 009 shape, both of which were created before this putter. Yes, he is akin to Thomas Kinkade in the putter world. But then again so are many designers and manufacturers.

The shame is both putters were made as and will become wall hangers for most. It would be cool to get a review from someone that actually put a 009 damascus into play.

I do remember seeing a .44 Magnum that was played on tour. Blasted finish and a lot of "character" from dings. That is a more impressive putter to me than something that needs dusting from lack of use.

If I had the means to purchase this putter I wouldn't be able to stop myself from rolling a few with it. I wouldn't game it or probably even wouldn't take it out on a course, but I'd have to try it.

"Scotty has assured us that he will not create any more of the D009 DSSs after those 24 putters have been sold. They are truly extremely rare putters with some collectors saying that it is the best investment around."

Wasn't sure if i was reading an ad for a putter or the Franklin Mint

Oh ok, I would not want to invest in Gold American Eagle coins or gold bullion anyway. I think I should invest in a putter.

RD

A couple things. Any putter I get has to be gameable. I have a beautiful Byron anniversary putter just sitting on my shelf and it is driving me crazy....to me, just too pretty to game.....so I'm selling it and will buy something that has been gamed so I don't have to worry about the 'first' brush mark. I would also love an 009 (because I want to judge them for myself) but I'm not in the market for a brand new one...why? Because I don't want to baby it and leave it in my office.....I want to use it. If it gets 'chattered' up, so be it. As for the Damascus 009, if I bought one and putted as good or better with it than any other putter....yes, it would have to be gamed. At $20K I doubt it would make it to any 'fun (i.e. drunk)' scrambles but I would want to game it. These things (whether it is a cameron, a byron, a mannkrafted, a betti, etc.) are not art in the sense of wall hangers but art in the sense of usable art. If that makes sense. But, in the end, even $500 is a lot of money for a putter so I couldn't even start to understand what it would be like to have a $20K putter...and I doubt that I'll have to worry about it any time soon.

I also want to comment on the last line of your post. Thank you for saying that. The only person that can do an anser style putter and get credit for the design is Mr. Solheim himself. Tweaks or no tweaks, they are all anser replicas. Some are heavier, some are handstamped, some are extremely expensive, some might even be better....but they are still all ansers.

Scotty's putter reminds me of those 'Elvis on a velour bedspread' souveniers you see in a South Carolina tourist shop - a garish admixture of function and kitsch. If he made them by the thousands and charged 39.95 I doubt a dozen golfers would put them in play.
