Generally each school will have a deal with one company, for apparel, and that company's balls, or with Titleist for balls, that the players get free. Deal on clubs is usually 25% off dealer cost, (ex. Vokeys for 75ish). Each individual school and player will have slightly different deals though, like if a player is on a full ride, the school may pay for equipment.

The team at the college I went to got free proV1s, evidenced by the fact that if you stepped one foot into the woods or weeds you would find at least 5 of them barely used. They would just wack them in there and reload without even looking. I didn't pay for a proV1 for almost 4 years just by playing out there.

For schools with contracts players will usually get the full treatement free. Balls, clubs, bags, shoes, clothes, rain gear, gloves, etc. For those without contracts you will usually get balls, bags, shoes, clothes free. Good dicsounts on clubs. I played for a middle of the road D-1 school and we didn't have a contract but we got a lot of good stuff free. I didn't have to buy balls for 6 years (4 in school and 2 years of leftovers).

One of the best perks that often goes unmentioned is the free golf. We had lots of courses within 2 hours of the campus that would let us play for free most of the time. It REALLY stings to have to start paying high green fees again after graduation.

It definitely depends on where you go and how good you are. We get shoes, bags, balls, gloves, tees, some clothes, and I've gotten a couple free clubs and some clubs at cost. Definitely the truth on being able to play free golf--we get to play the broadmoor a couple of times every year and some other courses in the area. We don't get a ton of free stuff but big name schools like UNLV get boatloads of free everything. And also, if you are individually elite, you can get a bunch of free stuff. For example, our number one guy got anything he wanted from Titleist/FootJoy for free so his locker was filled with a lot more stuff than the rest of the team. Oh and getting to go all over the country to play tournaments is a definite plus, especially if you're at a northern school and go to like Texas,Florida, Arizona, etc in the middle of winter. I gotta say, it's a pretty good deal.

I played for a different SoCon school a little bit south of you guys, and we had the same stuff. We got shoes, bag, shirts, etc... Our coach for some reason didn't like giving us too many balls or gloves. I don't know why, not to mention my first year we kept getting Maxfli Revolution's. I think by then Maxfli was already in the crapper, and the only reason I can think we would get them is because their headquarters was in the Spartanburg/Greenville area.

I'm playing D1 golf currently and let me tell you that it is an AWESOME experience! Last year (my freshman year) was the innagural season for the school's program, so that was even more exciting. We get all the necessities provided for us (shirts and pants/shorts, hats, rain gear, shoes, gloves, bag, and a dozen balls for every tournament we qualify to play in). As far as clubs go, we get large discounts. Different companies have different college deals, but everything is cost or discounted below that. For example Callaway has a very substantial discount program (I believe its something like 40% off of cost) but PING is closer to just the cost - it all depends on what the company has set up. I have friends at bigger schools, and they have told me they have much more elusive deals with companies, and they also recieve much more in terms of apparel and headcovers and whatnot. It really is a sweet deal to be a college golfer!

I played for an average D1 school back before amateurs could accept free equipment from manufacturers (1998-2002). We had a deal with Titleist and were able to get everything for like 20% under cost. I do remember being able to buy custom Mil-Specs for $90.

Other than that, we were provided with shoes, shirts, 1 Hoofer per year, rain gear, titleist gloves and Pro-V's. You got 5 sleeves and a glove before each tourny and had to make whatever you had left last until the next tourny. Nothing was unlimited.

As others mentioned, I think the greatest benefit is the free golf. You basically get a 4 year membership to your home track and any courses in the area.

I don't play college golf, but I know that the players at the local college have a contract with Bridgestone. I work at the course that they use as their home course. One day it rained pretty good so we had our driving range closed but the college guys still wanted to hit some balls. They came out and pounded tons of brand new B330's onto the driving range. Needless to say I was on the range picker not long after they left stocking up on a bunch of Bridgestones that had only been hit once.
