Cutting it down

Question to anyone who can answer...
I have a 35" Newport 2 Tei3 w/ a UST Frequency Filtered shaft.
If I cut it down an inch and half, how much swing weight would be lost?

Also what are ways to bring the swing weight up?

If you knock off one and a half inches of length from a putter it'll be appreciably lighter. There are a lot of arguments for swingweights in putters being largely irrelevant but conventional wisdom holds that each inch that is lost in length equates to a required increase in headweight of a 10g. An inch and a half would thus require 15 extra grams to be added according to that theory.

Adding that much weight to a putter essentially boils down to lead powder and cork down the shaft - which is not ideal with many putter designs as it can markedly alter the balance and feel of the putter - or to add weight to head via lead or tungsten plugs or inserts. Adding 15g via lead tape alone is a bit of a task and not really viable.

You'll lose about 9 SW points but in putters, that's just a number. You may like the lower SW better. Nothing magical about the original S unless that happens to be the SW you like best. Maybe it isn't. I don't know. Easiest way to add weight back is lead tape on the sole. Next is powder down the shaft.

Keep in mind that the UST FF putter shaft has a carbon fiber butt end which results in an increased SW over a traditional steel putter shaft due to the lighter material. You'll definitely lose some SW when trimming but it won't be the typical 3 SW points per half inch like a traditional steel shaft.

Thanks for all the replys, i think my decision is to just grip down and inch when i putt because it feels comfortable there, and i dont want to loose a lot of weight thanks

By gripping down already you're effectively lowering the swing weight and won't feel any difference when trimming an inch off the butt end.

How does gripping down keep you from losing weight as opposed to cutting down?

If i grip down...then if i eventually dont ;ike the feel, i wont have a shorter putter, but just grip normally again

Do shaft extensions affect feel?

Gripping down has the same effect as shortening the club because the primary source of club weight (the head) is now just as close to your hands. Swingweight is a measurement of how heavy the head FEELS and is directly proportional to the overall length (and overall distance from the hand position to the head).

Just like choking up on a baseball bat, the head won't feel as heavy. Unlikely to hit the ball as far, but more control and swingspeed.
