Nike ONE Tour for 2009 - Any news?

better than the 2008 NOP?
The current (2008) Nike ONE Platinum is an excellent all-around ball and my favorite after a lot of experimenting with various competitors. Nike's 2009 ball offerings include the ONE Tour and the ONE Tour D (replacing the NOP and NOB, respectively-at least I think so), and the ONE Vapor. This has me wondering what to expect for changes to an already fine ball in the 2008 Nike ONE Platinum. Does anyone know what changes Nike is planning for this ball? Different feel, more distance off the driver, durability, etc.?

I got a dozen of the new four piece (Nike One tour) just the other dasy, I'm taking them out today. The packaging says that it is going to spin less off the driver than the Plat., supposed to be longer (of course it is). It has a urethane cover, seamless, etc. I'll give a little right up after I play a couple of rounds with them.

Vapor has a surlyn cover and will be like an NXT Tour, and NOT like the RX.

Ionomer actually, but you are correct otherwise.

Surlyn is an ionomer.

Surlyn is just a brand name of an ionomer and is what is typically used to make golf balls. This holds true in the case of the Vapor as well. It has a surlyn/ionomer cover.

Potato? Potato? / Tomato? Tomato?

OK, sorry it took so long, but I'll give a little review. As I posted earlier, I got a dozen a few weeks back (on a side note, my staff order came in today and I was expecting Platinums but Nike sent me 18 dozen One Tours!!! Christmas a few days early!!!!) and have played two rounds with them. But the best test I got was last week I played a par 3 hole for a tournament at our course, so I played the same hole 18 times. I used a Pro V1X for 5 groups, a Platinum for 6 groups, and the One Tour for 7 groups.

Simply put, the One Tour is an exceptional golf ball. The hole was playing 138 yards and I used a PW. Ball flight is similar to the 1X, but the one feels a little softer off the wedge. Both the One and the ProV spun quite a bit more than the Platinum (about 2-3 yards more with the PW). After each group let the green, I would hit some chip shots and pitch shots and the One actually felt better than the ProV. I felt like I had total control of the spin around the green and out of the bunkers. While waiting for groups to come to the box, I would get an 8 iron and hit knock downs into the green (my favorite shot). The One was solid, one hop and stop every time at a consistent distance.

The full rounds I played with gave me similar results. The One Tour is a looonngggggg golf ball, longer than any 4 piece ball I have played. Its flight characteristics off the driver seem similar to the Prov1X as well. Even on a cold (43 degrees) windy day, the Tour ball performed exceptionally. Without a doubt, this is an extremely easy ball to work. I had no trouble knocking it down, fading it or drawing it, or hitting really high cuts without ballooning the ball. I realize the Titleist ball (perhaps the best golf ball ever made IMHO) is the be all end all for so many, but the Nike One Tour is a better golf ball. It is soft soft soft and long long long. It is consistent and accurate with very little dispersement.

I have yet to play the Tour D. The only negative is that I wish they would have put a better alignment aid on the ball. I guess they realize that most people draw their own with a Sharpie and they took a minimalist approach, but I prefer a more pronounced aid. Other than that, I believe that Nike has designed a winner here.

At this point, I agree with Prospero. I've only played 18 holes with the Nike Tour D, 12 holes with the Tour and 6 holes with the Vapor. If you currently play the Black or Platinum I believe you'll be pleased with this years Tour D or Tour.

When I played the Tour D it was cool with 25 to 30 mph winds. The ball felt solid and responsive off the club face (driver, fairways, irons) and the ball held its line nicely in cross winds and no balloon balls into the wind. Easy to work trajectory and spin on short pitches and chips. Plenty of spin to suit my game. Nice feel with the putter as well. Currently I play the One Black.

This past Saturady the weather was cool (60's) but very little wind. The Vapor played very good as well. It feels softer than the Tour and Tour D and seems to spin less.......in particular short pitches and chips. Seemed to have my normal distance with the driver and irons. I'm thinking this could be a great ball for cool to cold days.

The Tour has an excellent feel as well. Great trajectory off the driver with my "normal" swing, could go low and boring as well and I was able to move the ball right and left when needed. Irons felt crisp, very consistant trajectory and excellent hold on approach shots to the greens.

I'm hoping to get out this Thursday or Friday, using TrackMan, and work with the new balls. Definitely want to work 7i through the wedges and my driver, more if I can hold up....LOL. If I get some numbers I'll repost some additional comments.

I'm starting to work through my bag to compare the current ONE Black, the ball I play at this time, to the new ONE Tour and Tour D. Below are some numbers with my 47 degree PW on a TrackMan. I'm not real steep as my attack angle is generally -3 to -4 degrees.......pretty shallow divot. The numbers are an average of 12 shots with each ball, poorly struck shots were removed from the data.

BALL......BALL SPEED....LAUNCH ANGLE....SPIN

Black........93.7.............24.0................8642

Tour.........92.8.............25.3................9065

Tour D......94.9.............23.6................8441

I'll post more as I work through the clubs. Good weather to get outside is still the big variable this time of year.

From what I have been able to find out the One Tour is for swing-speeds of 95mph and higher. The One Tour D is a three-piece for more distance. I have used the One Platinum for as long as it has been out and before that the One Gold. It sounds like they have made improvements so that higher swing-speeds will have a ball that does it all. Giving you the distance that your swing-speed dictates while finally being able to have the spin and greenside control in one ball. I hope it works.
