Penta..Penta.....maina....wow I'm impressed!

I've been playing with the Zstar for about a year now- and just love that ball- very consistence does all the good things....but my dam curiosity got me to pick up a sleeve of the Penta's-

I played 18 holes with this Penta today- wow...Its long..and spins like a top with the wedges and soo soft off the putter....I really thought it was the typical TM hype machine...but this ball is something else.....anyone want to buy 3 dozen Z stars? I now have a new ball- which actually feels like the "15th" club! well done TM!

I really like the Penta. Performs a lot like a PRO V1. The one real problem I have with the ball is that, much like the PRO V1, durability is terrible. I found one at a local course and used it for the round. After two full wedge shots, the ball was toast. If they could just fix the cover issue without hurting performance I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I'll wait for them to be 2 for $50 and then I'll try them. In the meantime, i'll live on my red ldps for the time being and still picking these up when I can. So far I am not impress with the i(z) at all while the Zstar is great and durable, it lacks the edge of the TM ldp.

Ok- I did find one thing that is or is not an issue with the penta....on my approach shots...with the Zstar there has always been release once it hit the greens.controled release, but still release....however with the penta I'm finding this ball to more less stop very very close to where it lands....which may take a bit getting used to in terms of judging yardage..winds..etc..
But so far I really like this ball....and I found some on ebay with much better pricing- still more than I like to pay, but at least it takes the sting out of it...that an figuring out how not to loose them !

I played both and I seriously couldn't tell if one is better than the other : they are 2 great balls.
There is one respect in which the FG Tour is a lot better though : price.

Very true on the price but for me the penta was far better, i just shot the best round of the year with it 37 front and 36 back and the wind is blowing about 20+mph today in indiana

Do you think that, on the same day, in the same conditions, with the same swing and the same level of self-confidence, you could have had your best round of the year with the FG Tour or any other premium ball for that matter ?

I had one of my best rounds too last week, and I was playing the B330S (2008), a ball I do not really like and that seems to consistently give me control issues. The fact that I was playing this ball doesn't make it the best ball for me, I just happened to have a few sleeves left that I wanted to get rid of. I would have had a great round regardless of the ball (say, any pemium ball with decent spin around the greens), my concentration and confidence were that great.

But when I play the Penta and the FG Tour side by side, I can tell they are different, but I can't tell which is best. My wallet notices the difference when it's time to pay however. Even if they were going for the same kind of money, which they don't, I would probably prefer to give my $ to Wilson than to TM.

Ya no doubt it could of been with the FG Tour today but i just love how the penta feels and reacts around the greens, feels great off the driver and long irons also, its just a predictable ball its like it always does what you want either running out or checking up

I like feel, playability, and cost better on tour i(s) and b330s much better than penta. Want to try i(z) too!
[/quote]

I've played both balls side by side and the (i)z isn't even in the same class as the Penta.

Also, the Penta isn't for everyone. You need to be able to compress it properly to get the best results. There are numerous other Penta threads talking about that.

Agree, for me the (i)z does not compare with the best balls out there. I know some guys love it, but in terms of feel especially it doesn't feel like a "premium" ball, especially off the putter. Similar in that respect to other Callaway balls I tried. Gee, they bought Strata, and Strata knew how to make great golf balls, too bad they seem to have lost that knowledge.

I had a chance to play the Penta a few times this year and I found it to be a "one-off" type of ball.

One-off the driver and it's gone.

The bloody things flew like boomerangs into the trees! The Callaway ix's were straight on most every drive, the Nike One Tour D's spun just a bit more but I just couldn't control the spin on the Penta. I probably would have loved them off the irons or putter but I never got the chance to try.

Not much fun watching $54.99/dozen balls disappear into the woods!

I love the PENTA everywhere except the driver. I play it because I hit driver maybe 10-12 times per round. I'm willing to give up a few yards off the tee to have all the short game feel and performance the PENTA offers. For me, I start at the green and work back to the tee to fit my ball.

If you're willing to buy in a decent sized lot, you can price out Pentas to be about $30-35/dozen on eBay. I bought 9 dozen on eBay when they were first released for $320.

gppgolf.com had them on sale for $35/dozen multiple times through out the year as well.
