Wilson Maximum

Maximum what is the question.

I went into Walmart today to pick up a bag of tees and saw these Wilson Maximum balls on sale...12 for $5. I haven't seen brand new balls at that price point for a while, so I thought, I"d give 'em a try. Its only 5 bucks.



I played my regular course and lasted 13 holes hitting these Wilson balls. They are, without question, the shortest balls for total distance I have hit in the last five years. I lost 5 to 10 yds with every iron, and lost close to 20 yds average off the tee. They were reasonably straight, and I was putting well with them, but the distance loss was beyond what I can take. I'm not a long hitter by anyone's standard to begin with and these did not suit me at all. Went back to my Bridgestone E6+ balls and all was well. :)

I tossed the Wilsons in my practice bucket. Oh well, not much lost.

Well, if it's any consolation, Golf Town had a clearance on Volvik Crystal Pro 3-piece balls the other day at $10/doz. For that, I figured "How bad can they be?" and picked up a dozen. Figured they might be like a Noodle Ice, which really wasn't that bad a 2-piece ball.

Well the answer to my question of "How bad can they be" is "really bad". Hard feeling for a low compression ball. And zero (I mean zero) manners around the green. Makes a Top Flite XL look like it's checking like a ProV. Had to take it out of play after two holes after two "run forver" pitches cost me at least two strokes. Horrendous, though at least straight off the tee.

Good thing I passed on the Maximums too. I heard that Wilson's Non-Staff balls are built to a Wilson spec by whoever will bid the lowest. This explains gems like:
- Prostaff x2 Rip Spin - More like Rock Hard, No Spin
- Profile Anti Slice - More like Profile Anti-Good

FYI, I do like Wilson balls, and the 09 Zip is my current gamer.

I found one of these on the course a couple weeks ago,and when i got home i gave it the old bounce on the basement floor test.and it was alot shorter than any other ball in my shag-bag(and there are some really awful balls in there).

FYI i love Wilson Staff golf balls though:The C:25 is my gamer
