why always on the tee box

So I was using a ball washer to scrub the dirt off my golf ball at the tee box and got to wondering -- why isn't this thing back near the green where I just spent so much time trying to scrub the mud off my ball prior to putting? I can't believe I've played the game this long without wondering before, and now I'm wondering if I'm just that slow, or is this some "original" idea that course managers should consider? It wouldn't come into play anymore than the giant fans they have around some of our greens to keep the air moving in the heat of summer, so I seriously doubt that they would create a playing problem...

More potential drops needed, folks would wait to putt untill noise / motion stops, folks could'nt hit to the green while people are washing the balls after the hole is done (you KNOW some would do that). Be a PIA if you ask me. Bring a smal towel to the green, problem solved.

Sooo....If it was by the green then what would we do? Go to the ball, mark it, walk back to the ball washer, wash the ball, come back to your mark, then go through your pre putt routine? That doesnt sound like it would be very conducive to pace of play. How about taking a damp towel with you up to the green and wiping your ball off prior to putting? Polish it off with a lil spit and elbow grease (yea I know there is a joke in there somewhere). Those things seems to have worked pretty well all these years that ball washers havent been by the green.

The majority of greens do not have giant fans around them. I think a ball washer sitting a few feet off a green would look rather ridiculous.

Come to think of it, I almost never use a ball washer anyway. Just my wet towel, same one I use for wiping off my clubs.

Between the tee box and the green, there's one place where you are guaranteed that the ball isn't in play yet. It makes sense to wash your ball at that point.

You could always get one of the ball washers from AXE they advertise on TV.

very good point i have never even thought of this idea. why a very good point i do think it would look realy funny and a wet towel station or rack thing would work

+1, I use this every round as well. There is no better feeling than having a clean ball every time you putt it. It's a ball washer in your pocket for less than $10.

I just use a tour issue towel and get it wet with tour issue water. Makes my ball sparkle like the teeth of the Orbit gum woman.

Four players queuing to wash their ball on every green before putting and then probably again holding up play to use it before traipsing off to the next tee, could probably add nearly an hour to each round...

If there's one thing you can guarantee in golf, it's that balls can end up anywhere on the course - and I mean [i]anywhere![/i] It would be rather silly to place a ball washer at a location other than where you could reasonably expect someone to be in close proxity to it in order to use the washer without undue delay. What better place to put a ball washer than where [i]all[/i] players are at least guaranteed to be at the start of each hole? The tee box. Once on the green, you can mark your ball and use a damp towel or similar to clean your ball. A ball washer on or near the green? No chance - players take too long around greens as it is!
