Game:What would you hit?

Recommended Posts

Try and go for it. If it doesn't happen you have a short chip up to the green. Always expect everyone to do the unthinkable in matchplay.

Your down by one with one to play. You snap-hook your drive into some trees, but because it is a dogleg left, you have 50 yards into the green. A tree is blocking your path some 12 feet in front of you. Do you try and hit over the tree onto the green to try and give yourself a chance for birdie? Or do you take your medicine and punch out backwards to 120 yards and try to make par? Your competetor has missed the GIR but has a short chip for birdie.

You're down by one, you have to press. Flop a gap/PW (nothing more than 56 degrees, anyways) over the tree.

You're up by one in match play on the 18th fairway, and five holes ago, you were four up. Your partner's made a great run to chisel the lead down. He hits first and sticks it tight with no more than a kick-in for his birdie. Do you go for the pin and end it right there, or play to the middle of the green and play the extra holes?

Since You didnt mention trouble near the pin, i go for it. end it there. you dont wanna play for the playoff after being 4 up and then lose.

1st playoff hole in a huge tournament. hundreds watching and the hole is a 340yard sharp dogleg right. to reach the corner its 185. the other option is to go for the green over a small amount of trees, and must carry about 255 yards of water. your oppenent knocks an iron out there right at the bend. do you go for it?

No chance. Hit it just short of him, and put it middle of the green.

You're tied for the lead on 18. It's a 6 iron to the flag in with water the whole way. The pin is 10 feet on. Your opponent hit it center green and you know he's gonna 2 putt for par. Do you go for glory and risk water or go for a playoff and risk hitting it over the back?

play safe but not too safe. then if u mishit it a little ur in good position or if u strike it well your still not too far away.

level on 18, reachable par 4. bunkers surround the green with ob if your 25 yards offline both sides. your opponents up and puts in right rough but only 30 yards from the green with a great angle to a tight left flag. hit driver and go for broke to try and win on 18 or play safe wit fairway wood or long iron and hope your opponent doesnt get up and down and go to the 19th.

Go for the green...If I hit it 25 yards offline then my driver is going over my knee, I would love to be in a greenside bunker.

Similar situation...Drivable par 4, false front where if you are short it rolls back into water, there is also water on the left side of the green and an extremely deep bunker on the right, and the green is pretty narrow. You are 1 down with 1 one to play, your opponent just hit it perfect right in the center of the fairway about 50 yards from the green (he has a good short game also) Do you hit driver, or layup to where your opponent is

Ill keep this moving.

You've got 30 or so yards into a green. Pin is almost exactly 3 paces on, it has an opening up the front of a raised green that is shaved very close ala Pinehurst No.2. Do you take your lob wedge, loft it and try to land it on top of the flag, or take a mid iron or so, and run the ball up onto the green?

How about putting it or using a hybrid...? Out of those options I would say lob it with a lot of spin.

punch it under a tree? or Go over the tree? From about 150 yards.

From 150 yards fly it over the trees.

265 downwind into a par 5 with water long, no trouble short, but with a huge tear in the green...

Run it up safely on the green?

Or fly it to the hole high and hard?

Hit the ball! In that situation you have to be aggressive

9 iron to the flag, there's a false front to the green 3 feet from the flag that will make your ball run down to an impossible situation. Par will win you the tourney. Do you be aggressive and go for glory orplay up the back of the green and leave yourself a severely difficult downhill 'cliff' putt?

If par will win me the tournament, just play for the middle of the green, no need to be aggresive unless you NEED a birdie to win or go into a playoff.

This is coming from the third hole at my club...it's a 610 yard par 5, that at 280 yards doglegs straight to the right. Now if you take your tee shot on a far right line you can get your ball to anywhere 250-270 yards from the hole. Say you hit your drive straight out and have 280 yards to the green. Now you can't reach it with your three wood, and there is about a 30 yard patch of rough that starts at 90 yards and goes to 60 yards from the hole (pretty much the only place you don't want to go). Do you take out a long iron and lay up to ~100 yards or do you try and kill a three wood leaving yourself a 30-40 yard pitch?

Deffo layup to 100 yards. I'm confident enough in my wedge play that I can get it up and down 7/10 times.

You're making a run for 59, and you're hitting the ball excellent. If you par in, you shoot 61. 17th hole. It's a xxx yard par 5 with a sharp dogleg to the right (a good drive for you would make it unreachable, but you'd have an easy layup, and be able to get up and down. Trees line the fairway, but there's a gap about 20 yards between the trees and OB to the right. Putting a good drive in that gap all but guarantees you a shot at the green, and a pretty good lie.

what do you do sir

what do you do

Depends, what got me in contention? If its ball striking, go for the stick, if my putter is hot, get it to a definate bogey and drain it.

You have a fairway shot at 110 yards, you have a green with trouble long and two tiers. The pin is on the back tier, theres nothing but flat fairway short, if you roll it over the green the rough will keep the ball par-able, and if you go longer (ie fly it, or hop it hard) your not making par.

A) Take a club of your choice and run it up the slope.

B) Take a club of your choice and try to land the ball into the slope, and stop it that way.

C) Take a club of your choice, try to fly it to the top shelf and spin it.

D) Throw it.

Lag it close and hope it drops- I wouldn't want to throw it away with a 3-putt, and I'm pretty confident under pressure. And the worst case scenario is that I'll have experience in a playoff.

Just for the record, I've been a playoff 3 times in my life, all of which were in match play. I'm 2-1. But I've been in playoffs with friends over money and stuff and that helps me play better and gives me confidence in playoffs. Most of all, I wouldn't want to give the tournament away- I want the person to beat me, and not blow it.

You and your opponent are playing a tight par 5. You have 226 into the green, and he has 225. You're both in the fairwya, and the layup shot is simple with no problems, however, the shot to the green is well guarded by bunkers and water all over the green. Your opponent is very erratic, and has made everything from an eagle to a triple bogey that round. Do you go for the green or play safe?

I would hit a light PW to 100-105 yards or so, then stick a SW stiff and try to make birdie. I don't have a confident shot from 225. My 5 wood is incredibly erratic (which is why I'm selling it, my 3 wood isn't the most consistent club ever, and I can't reach it with a 7 wood or long iron, so a layup is probably my best option.

I'd hit driver short of the bunkers (sad I know lol)- even if I swing out of my shoes, I probably won't even reach the bunkers (longest drive ever is 272). I'd put a driver out there around 230-250, hit between a 5 and 8 iron, depending on how far my drive goes, put it on, 2 putt for the win.

7th at Pebble Beach- what do you hit? (107 yard downhill par 3, or somewhere around 107)

Lay up to a good wedge distance. For me, that's around 100-105 yards (full 55*). My 3W doesn't get up high enough to clear anything. That's one of the reasons it's getting kicked out of the bag as soon as my Ping 5 wood gets here (I won it today on ebay).

You're down 4 making the turn on the final 9 holes. There are several holes that are risk-reward. Do you you go for all of them and try and overcome the 4 shot deficite or do you play your game and be happy with a top 10 or top 5 finish?

Layup.

You're short-sided. DEEP trap between you and the green. Flag 6 feet from the edge, with a long green past the flag sloping away from you. You're only 25 yards from the pin, with a pretty tight lie.

Lob it (and maybe hit a spectacular shot, but if not you'll be in the trap and looking at being lucky to get out) or play it safe to the middle of the green, and leaving yourself a LONG put (that could easily be a 3 putt).
