Golf is very much a game of confidence. There are plenty of guys on here that are probably hard pressed to break 90 that play blades and dump one $300 shaft for another because one "feels better and spins less." There are also plenty of 10 handicaps that are closer to a 2 that take your money with GI irons. Funny example, Westwood plays i10's with JZ stiff shafts because they work. Do you think if he randomly went to a Ping demo day that he would fit into JZ stiff? Hes the #1 ranked player in the world with ill fit clubs, but their ill fit clubs that he is confident in. Its always funny to me when that 10 handicap scoffs at a guy using AP2's or i15's because they don't feel as good as his Miura blades.
With you all the way.

Anyone honestly think Lee Westwood couldn't play blades? He, like most world class golfers, would be successful with a wide variety of equipment.

I think the fact that you see pros playing these clubs speaks volumes to the FACT that these clubs are more forgiving on mis-hits with both distance and direction. There are two types of players when it comes to this debate. People who have accepted this fact and people who have not. This board is filled with a lot more have-nots than haves.

I know they can be a little funny to look at but let's be honest, you'd get used to it after a season. Maybe you're the kind of person who just likes to play blades for the added challenge and that's cool but if you like to shoot the lowest scores you can then you should be using CBs. And the whole feedback thing is a joke. It might not be as harsh, ripping vibrations through your hands and forearms, but you know when you hit it good and when you don''t with a cavity back and if you can't tell you might need to get checked by a doctor for some kind of neurological disorder. Maybe Ryan Moore will start gaming the CB2s next year and suddenly everyone will switch to cavity backs...

To the OP: A local factory rep told me once that some players are using the GI clubs to hit higher/softer landing shots because the new grooves reduce ball spin, making it harder to hold some greens. It's second hand info of course, but makes sense.

Rocco Mediate played Callaway x-12, x-14, x-16, x-18, x-20 and x-22's until he played Titelist Ap2's this year.
Callaway X Series are not a players iron, they are Cavity back game improvement irons and he loved them according to him in many videos on Youtube.com.
I play Callaway X-22's and I am a 16 handicap. They work for me and they worked for Rocco for many years.

As does Ben Curtis.

Me too!

Darn nice club - they look a bit big at address, but they feel great and get the ball in the air nicely.

A super club in the longer irons, and I sort of like the feeling of my 9-iron too.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse

I have a hard time believing 2 things: 1. Ryan Moore will play the CB2 and 2. Anyone would change clubs because Ryan Moore did...

I just want to throw my 2 cents on this. I used to play competitive paintball a few years ago, my former boss when I was in high school owned a pro-paintball team, Chicago Farside. It doesn't matter what sport it is, paintball, golf, fishing, racing, etc. Pro players are paid to use a company's equipment, so that company makes money off of the advertisement. What a player in any sport ultimately decides is, "Can I win with this?" That is the ultimate decision in any equipment-oriented sport. If the answer is yes and the check is decent enough, they will play it. Not necessarily because it is good or bad, just can I get the job done with this and still win?

At the 2010 St. Jude Classic, I noticed that quite a few players were gaming big, oversized irons. Chris Riley was playing offset-loaded g15 irons with a wide sole. K.J. Choi used g15s. Plus, plenty of Ping staffers are using the "somewhat meatier" i15s. Kenny Perry used to use r7s. Do they really like the look? Do they need forgiveness and are they workable? Where's the stereotypical pro with blades?
It's not how, but how many.

Is this really so hard to figure out?

If you read my post I did not say Westwood's swing speed was 105. I just mentioned that it is not overly fast. He just hits the ball dead square on the center and his distance is directly related to this more so than swing speed.
As Mat already stated he swings it 118 mph. Regardless of what you believe, speed is the greatest attribute to distance. Of course I'm not talking about the guys that are bad golfers. A guy that swings 120 and slightly mishits the driver will hit it further than someone who flushes it at 105. Simple math, Clubhead speed 120 x 1.4 (which is a pretty poor mis-hit) = 168 ball speed. 105 x 1.5 (perfect ball speed) = 157.5...certainly when you're talking about enormous hooks, fades etc it may not work that way but the ball should travel further. Bottom line someone that swings it 118 mph with the driver would more than likely not be fit into JZ Stiff.
agreed. the point is that his swing IS overly fast compared to the average player who would be fit for a stiff shaft. they would usually fit roughly between 90-105. 118???

Alot of the pros today learned the game playing cast cavity back irons. It's what they grew up with and they have a comfort level with them.
i think THIS is the reason why tourplayers play big cavity backs. do you think mahan's first set were blades? doubt it. he's just playing what he has always played.

I need to quit reading the debate between blades and cavity backs...now I gotta dig out the AP1-AP2 combos and the MP 52 and give them another go and see if they can knock the MP 68's out the bag...I do feel that the 68's control distance better then my cavities...but I do miss shots and am curious how bad I 'm being penalized with the blades...I'm going to play a couple of round with the cavities and check my scoring...Side note: today was talking with a friend that played on the tour last year and he was working out his driver, and I asked if he was playing the FT TOUR and he said he opted for the Diablo Octane...not as hot, but very controllable...An example of a pro going with the game improvment gear... I should of done a whats in his bag, maybe next week...
