Releasing the Hands/Clubhead

So if the definition of release is the right arm crossing over the left due to rotation, you are saying that you want people get the right arm crossing over sooner?
[/quote]

If the proper motion that leads to a release starts from the top of the swing and the body is rotating in sync, the forces will counteract and the release will happen exactly where it is supposed to for that individual.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

A lot of debate and confusion arises from certain definitions of "release". I think A good way to think of it is "club face control" and the release to me is turning the "club face". That might mean different things for different people (at least how I see it.) A release for a hooker versus a reverse roll slicer may be different. However IMO the Average guy needs some turning of the club face. That could mean backswing, early downswing, late downswing, just depends on that person. Generally it is EARLY.

I like it.

So its not the release that needs to be started earlier... right?

Release is just a misleading and bad term.

The end game is matching the clubface with path at impact to achieve the desired ball flight. Swing components that keep the clubface square to the arch longer and help eliminate face deviatons from squareish the arch are desireable IMHO. These can be achieved in different ways.

This was more or less my point. I think it has become something that it should have never been. Mainly because some people thought or still think (sadly) the ball is like a hot marshmallow and will actually stick to the face long enough for you to "release" spin into it. So now instead of people asking about how they get their weight forward or something similar they ask about how they release the club.

I recently had a highly talented player that honestly thought that he wasn't "releasing" hard enough. What helped him was actually going in the complete opposite direction... sadly I couldn't convince him to end his subscription with GD though.

CBrian......What if a player (cough, cough, me), for example, drags the handle a bit. Their face is a bit too open @ the last parallel to the ground before impact (per video). They hit a lot of straight pushes, and otherwise have a solid swing. How would you fix that?

I think Cbrian has a valid point.

When discussing the release how do you define release?

Does it involve factors in the setup that allow for a efficient release?

And any motions from backswing, transition, or start of downswing leading to impact?

Or just the act of releasing just prior to impact and through the ball?

And the resulting actions in the followthrough from a good action into and through impact?

I agree with slicer2scratch, its what you do to control the clubface and to a certain degree what you do prior to the downswing because if you over rotate the face open, or hood it too much, or get the shaft way out of position, or any one of a numerous other things to get out of position with your body, you have to do something to compensate in the downswing to manipulate the face back into the ball to even make contact (bad or good).

Drag the handle? You mean right arm doesn't straighten fast enough? Not sure I'm familiar with the terminology.

It's really hard to explain. When I put my swing on the V1 and compare it to a great player, my pivot, leg action, arms, lag...they all look great. My clubface is just more open and the last parallel on the way down and my lead elbow is pointing more towards the target at impact than the model. It leads to an open face at impact or a compensation somewhere.
