Handheld Stat Tracker

Recommended Posts

Is there one? Good/Bad
I have wanted to put together a stat tracker that I carry with me versus keeping track of it while playing. Does one exist, and if so are certain ones better than others?

I keep all the info on my phone. I have Droid incredible for Verizon. I just searched golf in the app store. You can input the name, yardage for each hole from each tee. The handicap of the hole. The slope and rating of the course. I keep my handicap on my phone as well. It's pretty cool. Didn't even think of looking for something until January.

I was hoping just for a hand held stat device. I hate cell phones on a golf course and refuse to bring mine so not looking for an app. Really want a hand held stat device. I saw they made one years ago but had issues and company is no longer in business..it was called Stat Tracker II. Is there anything else?

I hear this all the time. Just turn off the phone, or put into silent mode. Then you are not bothered and don't bother others with a ringing phone and you can use any app you want. Why by another device?

most of the handheld gps units now have stat tracking capabilities...I use the function on my UPro, can also measure distances for all my clubs. Very useful and even though i have multiple apps on my iPhone I typically use the UPro. Buying an old iPod touch is another good idea, just download one of the many apps available.

would ipod touch work without wi-fi

yeah, absolutely. It will work fine for stat tracking...not for GPS though.

Yes, it works fine without GPS. I like the GolfCard Pro app because it has great scorekeeping and analysis, and it's very easy to add courses over wifi. I keep the top 15 courses I play in it at all times, and I add others that I make trips to play. Never carried a card unless I needed to hand one in for event scoring. USGA/GHIN allows you to submit scores electronically so I have access to all my rounds for the season to track specifically what's hurting my scores and handicaps. Using the app, I've found that my best scoring/handicap improvement opportunity is by teeing off all sub-375 yard par 4s with my 3-iron because I'm always in the fairway 230-240yds leaving a perfect distance for a knockdown, no-spin PW (which are the only two shots I consider as my go-to shots at all times).

Other apps can do this, but I have about 80 rounds of into on my app so I wouldn't switch now. I do have an app with GPS on my smartphone, but the scoring feature on it just isn't as easy to use.

I gotta ask but, is using a scorecard really that hard?

Make a row for D, F, G and P on your scorecard. D is driving distance. Use "." for hits and "/" for misses on Fairways and Greens. P is number of putts. Write your total score below the P row. "ST" in a corner to note bunkers. You can add an "U/D" row, but you should be able to figure that out by just looking at the G and P boxes.

Pretty simple system that should track most of what you'll really look at or use. Fits in your pocket. No cost. No batteries. I suggest trying it out.

No, and we could all exchange these notes on paper through the mail (c; but why not take advantage of the technology.

I use an app called ScoreCard. They have a companion app for the iPhone/iPod Touch. You enter the info (Par/rating/slope/hdcp) for the tees on the courses you play into the app on the computer, and it syncs all that data with the mobil app. It will also print a score card if you don't use an iThingie.

You record fairway L-Hit-R, Score, #of puts, distance of first put, SandSave YorN, U&D YorN, and penalties. Actually it is smart enough to auto enter GIR and U&D based on the other info.

Scores and stats entered on the iPod sync automatically to the computer. The desktop app calcs handicap, anti-handicap, and shows you stats in the following categories for last round, last 5, last 10, last 20, and overall:

Scoring - handicap, anti-handicap, penalties, low round, high round, low eclectic, high eclectic.

Ballstriking - fairways, left, right, GIR fairway hit, GIR from left rough, GIR from right.

Putting - Total, first putt avg,, putts per GIR, putts per missed GIR, GIR first putt, zero putts, 1 putts, 2 putts, 3 putts, total distance made.

Putting Accuracy by distance - 0-3, 4-6, 7-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-30, 31-50, 51+.

Scrambling and sand save percentages, Scoring averages, Raw scoring, and best versus worst.

Stats can be viewed as percentages or actual values.

You can choose which courses, tees, conditions, and round type to display stats on, and even set bookmarks in the program to track things like when you put a new driver or set of irons in play so you can see how they affected your stats. You can also view graphs of stats over time using the same filters. It will even automatically generate web pages for your rounds and their stats so you could post them for your pro or coach to review.

Yes… you could enter this by hand into a spread sheet and do the same thing if you are a whiz at spreadsheet macros… but why bother? the app is like $25 or something (for Windows and Mac).

Apps are great. Asking why not use a scorecard isn't much different than asking why not figure out your grocery costs by carrying a sheet of paper and calculating the costs as you pick up items.

Using a scorecard's not complex, it's just inconvenient. And it doesn't give you stats information instantly like apps do.

Never had anyone I played with and saw me scoring on my iPod Touch not comment on they might/wish they could do that. At the same time, I never saw anyone tracking by pencil that I wanted to emulate. That was me a couple years ago. Not any more.

I keep a paper sheet just for scores that have to be attested and turned in.
