Play Lions Municipal. Its not what you would call a great course. but it is the place that Ben Crenshaw played as a kid and the layout (the back is better) is pretty descent. It will be slow on the weekend. I played it four years ago so take that into consideration. I also played Roy Kizer, that was fun.

Contrary to an earlier post, Lions is one of the city's public courses -- not a bad track, but this time of the year, don't expect it to be in good shape or the play to be very quick. That being said, Austin is way overbuilt with couses so you have a bunch of options, but there are some bad ones to stay away from (riverplace, balcones cc, lakeway courses (except for the Hills and Flntrock), and Lago Vista.

Go to golf512.com and check out special discounts. Kizer is a links style muni course and good in South Austin. ColoVista is decent in nearby Bastrop. Star Ranch in northeast Austin and Sun City is G'town are good daily fee courses.

There are a bunch of great CC tracks around although the prices may be at or above your limit.

Some other upscale daily fee courses to consider are Avery Ranch, Terra Vista and Falconhead. Even on weekends they are less than $100. The only places that will run more are Barton Creek (I would recommend either the Fazio Foothills or Canyons course) and Flintrock Falls at Lakeway.

You may need to google the courses for their websites, because they do not always show up on golf512.com if there are no tee times available. Of the municipal course Kizer is usually in the best shape.

Some that I've played numerous times...

Avery Ranch - Texas hill country golf, though it's not actually IN the hill country. Maintained a lot of the natural surroundings. Nice mix of holes...the front is pretty demanding while the back is pretty straightforward.

Star Ranch and Teravista (combined b/c they're so similar) - Both links-like layouts with sand and little trees. Both are usually in good shape. Star Ranch has huge greens that require you to be on the correct part (assuming they've got them fast at all right now). Teravista is the better layout of the two (IMO) but has two holes I'd blow up and start over.

Forest Creek - Fairly demanding target golf layout. Usually in acceptably good shape, but you won't confuse it for a premium daily-fee.

Roy Kizer - The only city-owned course that approaches "must play" status. Before this year, the final round of the City Championship was always held here (this year it was the 3rd round). Links-style layout.

You should definitely use your "expensive" round to play Barton Creek (Canyons or Fazio Foothills).

Falconhead gets good reviews from the people I've talked to, but I haven't made it out there, yet. Most of the other place worth mentioning are private, though I'm sure I'm missing one or two.

Kizer is a very fun Muni to play. It's usually in great shape.

As far as high end courses, the best public courses to play are at Barton Creek. If you can find a member, the UT golf club is a great place to play as is ACC.

If you have time, you might travel 45 minutes north to Salado and play a Robert Trent Jones Jr. course there--Mill Creek. It's a fun track.
