Push Carts - Average age of owner?

Recommended Posts

So I just ordered a Clicgear 3.0 and was wondering what the average age of push cart owners are? I'm 31 and still in pretty good shape but frankly I feel a bit young to own one. However, I tend to rent one at my course most of the time anyways. I prefer to walk 18, but I do get tired on the last half of the back 9 when I carry. I will probably leave the push cart in the car if I'm only playing 9, but I'm looking forward to having my own cart for 18.

I carry except for the summer when i run my Sun Mountain v1, it helps when i'm packing the extra fluids needed when its 100°. It also gives my shoulder a break but i still get the benefit of the walk.

I'm 28 and use one. I don't see very many people my age using one but I really don't care. I don't get as tired at the end of the round and its probably better for my back. Better to start helping my back now than helping it when I have issues.

I'm new to golf, just started in September/October, so I never had any "standards" to go by.

I have a ClicGear 2.0 which I use sometimes, I recently bought a lighter golf bag (SM 3.5) because I still like to carry about 50% of the time . . . I am 56.

I started pushing full time at the age of 42, but the eight years prior to that I lived in Ireland and carts were everywhere and for all ages. It seemed like I was the only bag toting guy around.

I will rarely carry now but I don't miss the carrying I must say, especially now that my Physio has confirmed what many have said - it is not a good form or exercise to carry, it is taking minuets away from your back health by carrying. She, the physio, has s great theory. Your back has only so many minutes available for use over a lifetime and using it for carrying golf bags (and other things like kids and suitcases) uses up those minutes in an accelerated manner.

Great points. Better to start earlier before you have problems then to start once you already have problems.

I'm thirty and have been using a push cart for 2 years. I have a lower back injury from snowboarding when I was 16 and a hip problem from medical issues. About two years ago i was golfing with a few people from work and they were both using a rental push cart from the course. After half a round my hip, as usual, was getting sore and tight. I asked the guys I was with how they liked using the push cart. They both recommended it because it was a lot easier on the body. They are both physio therapists as well. It makes sense if you think about though. Carrying all that extra weight for 4 hours certainly adds to the wear and tear on your body. The multiple times you lift and place the bag on your back per hole doesn't help either. Regardless of my injuries I still would have started using a push and I am glad I did. If you are not a frequent player then this may not be that big of a deal, but If you play multiple times per week then using a push cart can certainly be beneficial. Even if you are younger, mid twenties for instance, this is still a good idea. If you would still like to play a lot of golf when you are in your 40's, 50's, 60's etc. then using a push cart a little earlier in your life will certainly make it easier to do so.

I like to use the position of a mail delivery person as a good comparison. Carrying those mail bags over the years really adds up. It's rare for a mail delivery person to not end up in physical therapy at some point regardless of how good of shape they are in.

I've always found it interesting that in the U.K. and Europe pull/push carts are the norm but in the U.S. they have the declasse image of being something that muni golfers, women, and older men use. I'm not making a value judgement, just an observation.

Unless the course is a modern course with a long distance between greens and tees (around and through a housing development), at 62 I still prefer to walk and carry my own bag when I go out in the afternoon and don't have to take a caddie. At my club we have a very active caddie program, so using a caddie is encouraged during prime time; golf carts (buggies) are discouraged. Push carts for those who cannot carry their bag but still want to walk became possible only a few years ago. It's healthier to walk, of course, so I like the idea of encouraging walking; there's just that pesky "image" problem.

+1 Buggies and carrying in the UK are in the minority. Battery powered push carts are pretty common too.

Decided to start walking more to save money ($20+ cart fees are ridiculous!) so I purchased the Clicgear 3.0 about a month ago. I love it! I just turned 28 a few weeks back and feel like I've fallen in love with the game again. Now I don't worry as much about how slow the group in front of me is-- I just walk around and look at the scenery. :)

i have a clicgear 3.0 and it's amazing

i'm 23 and a former college tennis player, and have had so many knee and back injuries that i simply cannot carry a bag for 18 holes anymore. a push cart still lets me enjoy the game by walking

all the people who think that it somehow is less macho to use a push cart at a young age simply need to grow up and worry about their own game.

Carried from when I started golfing at 12 years old until I was 48. Bought a Clicgear 1.0 four years ago and realized I should have done it years before. Why put all the wear and tear on your body? Just for the ego thing of carrying? Of course, the old pull cart was nothing like today's push cart - what a revolution!

+1 more. New Zealand and largely Australia and South Africa that I know of, hardly anyone carries their own clubs. Aus and NZ the majority all had push/ pull carts until relatively recently riding carts became more commonplace at more swept up resort courses. SA similar, though caddies are more affordable and readily available.

I have a BagBoy Express 180, with a seat attachment ... how cool is that. Now I can sit down and enjoy my cigars while waiting for all the slow players riding in carts.
