Amateurs with Staff Bags...Yes or No?(merged)

Recommended Posts

I voted 'Who Cares'. I always find this debate rather odd. Amateur tournaments I play in are always awash with tour bags and there are no shortage of people ready to criticise those who do use tour bags. Personally, I don't care what people use. I can see the benefits of a tour bag; plenty of room to store everything. I don't use one (in fact more often than not I use a Titleist Sunday bag) but I'm not about the criticise people who do choose to use a tour bag. It's their decision and I think too often the criticism aimed at tour bags is some vague concept of a poser image that in reality is not the reason people actually bought the bag.

If you want to use a tour bag, go for it!

this thread is ridiculous,

Can an amateur wear black pants and a red shirt?

Can an amateur wear a cabretta leather glove?

Should an amateur dress like a pro? After all, who is he kidding?

When an opponent has nice equipment (or outfit), what is wrong with "Nice bag" or "great looking shirt, where did you get it?"

Do you have to look like your level of play? One has nothing to do with the other.

I play better when I look and feel good. In fact, I try to look and feel good all the time. On and off the course.

I live in a country club and we have our own golf carts in our garage that we just drive up to to the clubhouse (gated commuinty with no speeding cars and we we have sidewalks large enough for golf carts) , its pretty nice to have a staff bag since the bag doesnt leave the cart ever, I have 3 carry bags though since I play college golf and state and county tourneys, but in this case I would have a staff bag.

I have a staff bag that I won in a tournament a few years back and it's great for storing the spare clubs at home. The fact that it can stand straight up on it's own whether there's one club or 20+ clubs in there is what I like about it. Living in an apartment, space is a premium and the staff bag seems to take up less space as opposed to storing the clubs in boxes or other bags that I would have to lay flat on the ground.

I couldn't use the staff bag even if I wanted to. It just wouldn't fit in my car.

In the end, I say use whatever makes you happy. But I do wonder how the touring pros ended up using such large bags, especially since they (well, their caddies have to) lug that thing all over the course and have to travel with in on airplanes. I actually things it's pretty cool when I see a light stand bag on the course on PGA Tour events.

Isn't choice a wonderful thing?

If I were using a staff bag and my playing partner/opponent is spending more time worrying about what an idiot I look like as apposed to concentrating on his own game. Well as far as I can see, that's advantage me.

Why does it always have to be one extreme or the other?

Geez. You ask a question and if people don't like the answer then its gotta be that they're obsessed or overly worried about other people.

Its just a persons opinion. I mean everyone who posted in this thread felt the need to come here and share theirs regardless of which side they were on.

Even the ones who said who cares.....felt the need to come here and say that. :)

Guess they actually do care afterall. ;)

This thread is an age old debate. Personally if your worried about what your opponent is carrying his clubs with then odds are, he is already beating you. Harvey Pienick said it best, beware of the good golfers with bad grips because they have made it work for them. Same saying goes, beware of the guy who has the Top Flight leather bag with a hole in just as much as the dude who ordered his golf bag to have his name. If u play a notable tour, then have the name on the bag. Anyone else, get a better swing before bag.

The only reason I don't use staff bags (though I have 6: 2 Hogans, 2 Pings, 2 Rams) is that they have an awkward fit on my golf cart. So I use 2 cart bags, which is a PITA to lug around every day. I only wish my CC garage doors weren't open to the world so I can leave all my crap on my cart.

No problem whatsoever with whatever bag you want to carry. But, and flame away, I reckon it looks absolute toss to have your name embroidered on the bag, like a real pro wannabe, unless it is your team bag from college/ mini-tour etc.

Its the golf equivalent of having your initials monogrammed on your business shirts- personalized number plates or stenciling your name on the door of your car, if its not a track car and you dont have a racing licence.

You like a big bag, go for it, playing pro golfer dress-ups bag and all forget it

until recently i've always had at least one full sized staff bag as caddies are still pretty cheap over here--$10-$15 per 18 holes..

i have since switched to stand bags and smaller cart bags lately as many times my big bag took up too much space when we are 3 or 4 using one car to travel to a course...and it also cost too much when traveling by air..

i have never, however, used a branded or logoed bag unless the majority of my clubs are the same brand...

My boss said that if we ever use iron headcovers we might as well not show up to work the next day. I agree. If you want your irons to look mint, you chose the wrong sport.

Use whatever you want. Who really cares. I have seen guys who look homeless, playing with clubs from, god forbid, 10 years ago, and finish 3 under. I have also see dorks who look like they are sponsored from head to toe, and can't get a golf ball to move over 150 yards. Bag is a bag, and if you care that much about what someone else is carrying, you have some serious issues to deal with.

i think it really just depends on where you live and play.

when i was living in the states, i played mostly public courses, where the majority of the players walk. hence, it made sense to me to go with something lighter. it just made my life easier getting around the courses. but my dad and his buddies always ride, and they play mostly at country clubs, hence they all have either staff bags or cart bags.

i moved to asia 4 years ago, and here we are required to play with caddies. we usually ride or walk with carts. we basically never have to carry our own bags. the majority of golfers here uses an asian spect staff/cart bag, which is a slimmed down version of a staff bag. there are a lot of people that use the traditional big staff bag too.

my point is you can use whatever you like as long as it makes sense to you.

and the whole logo argument is just ridiculous. stand bags have as many logos on them as staff bags. and honestly, most brand name logos look pretty cool.
