Jinxy......I'm no club builder, but I believe they can use Tungsten power down the shaft.......although I'm not sure how much would be advisable without altering the head weight and swing characteristics.

Anyone have any stats on the PGA tour guys and what they are playing in terms of driver lengths? It would be interesting to see what the say.......
top 10 driving accuracy,
top 10 driving distance and
top 10 all around driving stats guys are playing.

On the PGA Tour, according to the Trackman data, the average attack angle is -1 degree, with driver lengths in the 44 1/2" range.

On the LPGA Tour, the average attack angle is +3 degrees with the average driver length in the 45" length range.

3step, don't make the mistake of associating correlation with causality, and further, the cause of the ascending angle is not necessarily the extra 1/2", but perhaps the ladies are more comfortable with the extra 1/2" because of their upward AOA.

I'm an upward AOA guy myself and I like my shorter driver for control and consistent distance.

I am with 3step, with the only exception being you have to also include how the head is delivered at impact as well. Many average players add loft to the driver with a descending AoA. Most good player deloft the driver at impact with positive AoA. This is not always true as you get the golfer who adds loft with a 0 AoA who should be playing an 11* but needs a 9.5*

Shorter is better quite often for the average player especially with modern heads that are basically maxed COR. Just like they hit 9I better than 4I

Maybe I didn't say things right.

Your case might be related to the weight of the shaft model, head weight, your build, or your mechanics, but in general-

angle of attack and driver length are related for the professional golfer and for the average golfer,

and

if a golfer with a downward angle of attack has been playing with a longer length driver, it is common that they will find better performance by switching to a shorter length club, (all else being equal), which is a kind of a "causality" thing, I think.

I dont get this, how do they add loft with a negative A0A (and vice-versa), is this by adjusting the driver? Normally 9* driver and -3* AoA = ~6* launch.

Basically they flip the hands at the bottom with a descending angle of attack. Not a club adjustment issue, just a golf swing issue. Some people call it casting, but I consider that to be more of a move from the top and losing the wrist angle, the flip at the bottom is just an early release with a steep angle of attack (IE not hitting the ball at the bottom or the upswing)

In all seriousness, why can't someone who is contemplating a shorter shaft simply grip down the desired amount and try it before they go and saw it off? If necessary, use a water hose washer or a piece of athletic tape if need be as a reminder and see for yourself with your own swing and measure your results.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Personally if I need more accuracy from the driver I choke down ala AK - as much as all the way to the bottom of the grip. When the fariway is wider or on par 5s where accuracy is not as important I grip normally at the end. I play a G15 at 45 3/4" BTW.

Its just not the same for me. If I choke down more than about an inch on a full swing, it just doesnt feel or look right.

RJ,

I understand what you're saying and that's also my point. Most like it but some don't. I just can't see why these guys take a chance and cut a shaft down without trying what it will eventually feel like first. I know you can always add an extension for what you've cut off but I think that scenario is totally unnecessary. jm.02
