Timing With Contacting College Coaches

I'm a fairly new member here, and a sophmore in high school.

 

One of the most frequently asked questions is "How do I get noticed by college coaches?" and the information supplied by other members in response to that has been good but when is the right time to start contacting coaches? NCAA rules are confusing and the Ivy's seem to make things even more complicated.

I contacted coaches in April of my sophmore year.... that gives them all the information they need to see your name. Then by september 1st of your junior year they will send out information and starting emailing back and fourth.

Letter included introducing yourself to the coach and giving him as much background information as possible. I also had my coahes send tournament resumes, swing videos, and tournament schedules.

my game plan is to write coaches of various schools this winter/spring to introduce myself and provide a schedule of tournaments and then send out tournament resumes at the end of the fall season.

I use to be a college coach. sorry, tennis, not golf... But i can contribute a few things, that will transfer to golf from tennis...

1. Grades. If you can't make it in college balancing the academics (which come first at pretty much every school in the country), you won't stay on the team since you'll be ineligible due to your GPA being below what is acceptable. Keep in mind golf usually has one of the highest gpa's of any sport on campus, so plan on hitting the books, not the booze and bars and parties.

 

2. Get in there for contact... Early as possible and be aggressive and play the events that the coaches will attend and ask them what events they will scout or recruit at. Call the athletic director at the school if you are not sure of the rules to avoid any possible violations, and keep in mind there are rules about responding to emails/ phone calls, etc... so they may NOT be able to reply (man i have been out of this like 15 years so stuff certainly has changed !!!!).

 

3. Foreign students ... more or less the same thing, keep in mind you need the TOEFL and an SAT score as well as a translation of your grades to usa school info so you can be considered.

 

4. Title 9 ? basically there are way more scholarships for woman's sports than men's sports, so golf may have 5 for men and 8 for women... That means there is probably a better chance for women to get a scholarship for a variety of reasons than men.

 

5. In the old days you could split men's scholarships, so perhaps you got 25% and so did 3 other players, etc.... or you got 55% after 2 years, etc...

 

6. Probably a ton of stuff here i can't remember.

 

GOOD LUCK!!! Playing college sports is tough, but well worth it.
