What hybrids should I look into?

Recommended Posts

I'm a beginner in search of a decent hybrid. I use the one I own now a decent amount but I'm pretty bad with it since it's a very bad hybrid. Some days I'm on, same days it's just way off. I'd like some more consistency from one. I don't want to spend too much since I'm new but have been looking at the Cobra Baffler Rail and a few Adams hybrids but there are so many. Also what degree hybrid(s) should I look into? I was thinking about grabbing a 23 for now.

Hit a wide variety to see what suits you best, Adams is great because they have a ton of models and readily available used(if you're trying to stay in a price point). Taylormade has some great older ones as well rescue dual, and 2009 rescue come to mind. Loft will all depend on the gap you're trying to fill.... For some a 20* hybrid can be a 245yd club for others it could be a 185 yard club, it all depends on you and your swing. You will find that one 20* will not fly as far as another manufactures 20*. Not to mention hitting a wide variety of clubs is a lot of fun.

Personally I like Adams and currently play a PNT V2 20* with a Matrix HM2, consistent, long, penetrating and lands soft.

When I was a beginner I was best off avoiding clubs with less than 20 degrees of loft unless the ball was teed up. So something like a 23-24 degree is probably great for you as a fairway club. Plus maybe a 19 or 20 degree hybrid or fairway wood for long Par 3's. But learn to hit a high (23-24) lofted club straight and high before trying longer fairway shots. Trying for an extra 20 yards isn't worth living with the bad mishits and wild shots.

Try the Mashie M4 its 23* and really easy to get a nice flight on it, also the shafts in these are very good. Good luck in your search, let us know what you chose and how its working out.

Wilson Staff H.S. Fybrids, they are a couple of years old but,you wont find a better hybrid anywhere. They are great for a beginner because they are so easy to hit,go super straight, have a higher than average ballflight and are very forgiving.Dont waste $100-$150 on a new hybrid, when you can find fybrids on the internet for $30 and $40 brand new.I have been gaming my 19.5* and 24* for almost 2 years now and i luv them.Just go with whatever gap you need filled in your bag,the fybrids come in 19.5*,21*,24* and 27*,find them and hit them.Did i mention they are easy to hit,so easy in fact that i feel as though i am cheating when i pull them out of the bag,you will not be dissapointed.

I've been pretty happy with my TaylorMade 2007 Burner hybrids. I've got a 19* and 22* in the bag with the stock RE-AX S flex shafts and they just go forever. Short/tight par 4s, that's my go to club. Hit the 19* to about 195-210 yards, which is perfect. I say if you can find them, pick them up.

+1.

Cleveland has made some AWFUL hybrids in the past but this "Mashie" is stupid easy to hit and very forgiving.

I just put the 3 and 4 in my bag ALONG with the #1 (15* to replace my 3 wood).

But try as many as you can. Nothing fits everybody. ;)

Awesome recommendation. Seems like a few people agree with you. I'm going to look more into this. Right now I'm using a hybrid from my beginner Wilson set and it is terrible. The set in general is really bad but I'm a beginner so I'm not too picky at the moment. I am furious about the hybrid though, could be using this in the rough or the fairway but I just have no confidence with the one I own now.

I play a variety of hybrids (1,3,4,5) - My favorite club currently is the taylormade superlaunch. Stupid easy to hit, great from the rough and really gets the ball in the air.

Second favorite club is the nickent 3dc rc / GS sells a 20* w/a stiff shaft for 60 bucks / cant beat the price and is great off the the tee and the deck

Happy hunting / there are soo many options - go out and hit a few and see what works the best for ya ...

As a beginner you may need the extra help that the offset that the Mashie offers. The club is light and it is very easy to launch the ball.
Both the latest hybrids from Titleist (910H) and TM (Rescue11) are very good, but not as forgiving. I currently play a 18* TM Rescue 11 which has a piercing trajectory and an older 21* TM '08 Burner which has a more traditional higher "hybrid trajectory" when I need to stop the ball faster.

Taylor Made and Titleist are the best.

Adams Pro Gold Idea Tour
if you have a strong swing speed get them with the Matrix shafts (red) they are very easy to hit, the ball comes off the face very hot they get great distance and you can flight them high enough to get the ball to check up well with a 200 + yard shot

I know you're a beginner, but once you progress to the mid handicap level, I'd suggest the Cleveland HALO hybrid.

It's an older model so you'll have to buy it used. The OEM shaft has works great with it, giving shots a nice mid-high, piercing trajectory. The head is forgiving enough and offers great workability. I still play with them.

I was almost going to get the Superlaunch hybrid since it's on sale, really didn't like it. It feels like a nice club but gave me no confidence. Don't know if it was the small, light, flat head and/or the long shaft but I did better with the hybrid out of my bag. So that one is out and gives me more of an idea of what I'd like.
