Companies do hand out free stuff to the top juniors. There are quite a few good juniors/college players that I know of that have been fully fitted for everything from Titleist. These are all kids from New England, as Titleist has a building in Massachussetts where they do the fittings.

ya I know people like this too. just gotta do really well in the huge nationwide (not the tour) events. best places are...usga events- jr. am, am, pub links, as well as ajga events. gotta be a serious competitor though. doin well in 1 or 2 tournys wont cut it. at least a years worth of solid play in these types of events will be the best if you are seeking a sponsorship.

It is not a SPONSORSHIP.... If you sign a contract with a sponsorship you can't play college golf.

What you can do as a junior, as i have had done, is to get your coach(es) to compile a video, tournament resume, etc and get in contact with a representative from that company. Then you email your specs and club preferences to the club rep and they will send it out.

yea, sponsorships negate your amateur and junior status so unless some of these ppl are like 16 and on a pro tour, they aint gettin squat for free right now.

now thats just a flat out lie. do you really think the top amaturs in the country pay tons of cash for their proto scotty's? no. i think of it a s a sponsorship w/o a contract. it also insures the likely possibility of being with that bnrand for life for friendship purposes.

ok to answer vthokie. Yes juniors are getting stuff for free right now. It is just not under a CONTRACT. the clubs are given to the player depending on certain things. Bjackason is right its basically a sponsership without a contract. except you can pick and chose whatever clubs you want there is absolutely no say in what you use. Actually that relationship of free clubs basically ends when you go to college because you play what your college can get you.

No. At the bigger colleges, most do; but its certainly not required. Because of their relationship w/ top colleges, you see a LOT of Ping being played at places like ASU, OSU, etc...

I know at ASU it is encouraged because of the strong relationship Ping has with the University's program. The course, everything Karsten did for them, etc...

Titleist TSR3 9* w/ GD UB-6 (S)
Titleist TSR2 15* & 21* w/ GD UB-7,8 (S)
Titleist u505 22* w/ Atmos Blue HB 85 (S)
Titleist T200/150 5-PW w/ Steelfiber i110 (S)
Vokey SM8 50*, 55*, 60* w/ S300

  • 3 weeks later...

I get free clubs from Titleist and this is how I got it. I was playing with a friend who is in college and has been on titleist jr. staff or whatever you want to call it for a few years now (holds ajga single round scoring record 62) and his rep was playing with us too (Fletcher Pavin corey's bro) He was impressed with the way I played and he asked me if I would play titleist clubs and stuff so he set me up. I also had to give him a tournament resume, which I already had to send to colleges. And that was it.....

I saw in your signature that you have a friend on the TM junior staff... I've heard that TM doesn't give out to juniors unless its kids in the top 20 in the nation. I heard they are very strict with that. Is your friend that good? or does he have some kind of connection?

Also what type of tournaments got you to build your resume to be able to convince him?

In college you are encouraged to play whatever company it is that your school has a deal with. Obviously they want you to play well, so if you feel comfortable playing something else that is fine. Also, once in college, you can no longer get free clubs directly from the manufacturer because it is a violation of NCAA rules. They can give the clubs to the athletic department who then distributes them to the players.

In terms of getting free stuff when you're a junior, being in the top of the rankings will certainly get you some free stuff. Also it is a matter of being in the right place at the right time and knowing the right people. Talk to your pro and see if he can talk to the rep for you, or even introduce you to the rep.

My friend went to the Aviara golf academy where he met a TM rep also as a freshman he was ranked 9th in the nation among freshman and was being recruited by ucla (the putter he uses was given to him by OD Vincent), unfortunately he has actually gotten worse as he has got older and is now playing for ucsd but he still gets clubs from TM. My resume included making it to the round of 16 at the US jr.

Thanks... Good playing at US jr what year was it?

so the division 1 teams are getting free clubs ? I have played on two division II teams and both have had deals with companies but still required you to pay for them. In 2003 I got the big bertha driver for 200 and they were being retailed for 500. The team I am on now has more companies to choose from, and I got a order in with TM on some r7 tp irons and a r7 460 but have not seen the price yet. Usually the deals are 50-60% off.
