TaylorMade Rossa Monza Spider

Recommended Posts

These are seriously the ugliest things I have ever seen in my entire life.

Thats all i have to say about these things. I could never stand looking down at this thing

How funny you should say that. I am a diehard Anser guy and at the age of 40 I stopped by GG one day to try some putters. This thing is beyond ugly. Then I just had to try it because every other guy on tour uses it. Every review gives it an A+++.

I never made more consecutive 15 footers in my life. The first putt felt odd but then I realized the balance is perfect and I had a great deal of conidence in it!

Now the Itsy Bitsy will be out soon and this one might be more for a traditionalist like me. I can't wait to try it.

Early Product Review for the Itsy Bitsy Spider

My IBS arrived yesterday, new, grip in plastic. It is 35" long and it is the plumbers neck version. I was only able to roll putts on the putting green for about 15 minutes yesterday, hopefully will get more time later today. I also putted for a while on the carpet last night. I have been a Spider user for the past several months with very good results, but the thought of a less obtrusive Spider was attractive to me so I pulled the trigger.

Initial thoughts: It seems quite a bit small (more than the 20% reduction advertised) the the original. With the weigh ports inside the face, it does look a lot sleeker than the original as well. To me it seems slightly smaller than the Odyssey 2 Ball with the Saturn ring on it, certainly much smaller than the 3 Ball version.

That said, it seems to set up just as easily behind the ball as the original version, maybe even a little easier on shorter putts. I felt very confident that I had it lined up where I needed it and the rusults played that out. It also has a very, very solid feel, more solid than the original to me, the face insert is the same but perhaps due to the size it has a different feel and I liked that alot.

When you look at the face, it really seems small, but when you are putting it doesn't seem that way at all, nothing like the Inza model at set up, which I thought was miniscule looking from the top.

The biggest difference that I can see so far (other than the look of course) is distance control. With the original Spider, distance just seems to come naturally for me, I look, I stroke and it just seems to go the right distance most all of the time. At least so far, it looks like the IBS is going to take a little more getting used to as far as controlling distances. I plan to play around with some different weights in the next few days and see if a little additional weight will be better.

The grip is far too small for my liking, I went ahead and pulled it off last night and put a Lamkin oversize on it, but I think I will also try an oversize Winn grip which will be considerably lighter than the Lamkin.

I will update this in a few days after I have had more time to get used to this new putter. At this point I would say that a complete switch from the original is up in the air due to the distance control factor which has been about my favorite thing about using the Spider.

Just curious... has anyone tried playing with an unbalanced weight profile? I have a heel shafted 33", and I'm curious as to what effect placing more (or less) weight on the toe would be. Intuitively, it seems like more toe weight would help with MOI in this model, but maybe not so much with the center shafted version. Might be a good winter project, now that the season is over in Michigan.

There's not a putter out there that is as easy to keep on line or puts a roll on the ball like the spider. My friend bought one and i putted with it for a bit on the practice green and fell in love. Ive been putting with a scotty studio select for the past year so its definitley a different look but nothing looks better then the ball going in the hole. Best buy I've made in a while. A++

Just bought an original spider 33 inch.. man i know it looks stupid esp. the head cover and ive already gotten ripped on but DAMN it rolls nice... had it down to between this and the sabertooth but just felt the slightly firmer face on the spider was better, not to mention lines up a lot easier. Still surprised I had to pay full the same price that this putter was 1.5 yrs ago , but probably just speaks to how good it is. Also, got a 12 pk of Burner TP balls for free with it!

I have had my Spider about 3 months now. With the help of my golf pro and quite a bit of practice, it took a few rounds but I am convinced that this club serves me well. It felt good from the beginning and the ball comes off the head very nice. It may not be for everyone, but it is certainly worth anyone's time to give it a try.

People might be turned off by the look, but the functionality is great. The AGSI insert provides consistent and soft feel from all distances. The rolls are pretty true, however I generally feel that I need to hit all my putts harder. I have the Itsy Bitsy, and I think the smaller head gives it a more traditional feel (altho I only tried the full size head at a demo).

Had the 35" Model 6 weeks.

It excels in 2 areas;

4` and in. The super weight balance smooths out my stroke and real solid on these now.

&

No more long put miss hits ending up 3/4`s there. The thing is just 1 big sweet spot.

Negative so far is that I`ve not had a below 30 Putts day yet.

With my old trusty(Ray Cook Billy Baroo 1992 Milled Face answer type. Scotty had a hand in design before he left Ray Cook I believe. Used this since 92!) I had 3-5 rounds per year under 30. Am waiting for that day to afirm its position.

As of yet not quite draining as 5`to 25` as I want, but got a feeling that could come as I get more used to the still newish feel.

I average 32-34 Putts now compared to 34-36 with Billy.
